Ele - Off To The Future Pt.5

"About You" releasing March 18, 2015, is a compilation that focuses on budding underground producers based in the Toronto area. The roster was hand selected by Exhume and encompasses a well rounded future beats sound. Producers include; Shagabond, Falcxne, The Theorist, Sada., The Kount, HMLT and Casio McCombs.

About You is Exhume's first compilation release. With a steady following via Youtube, Exhume Music decided to focus its attention on the Toronto producer scene for its first release. The album will be made available for free download on Exhume's Soundcloud page. Stay tuned for more as Exhume will be showcasing other producers from around the world for Pt.2 of About You.

Casio McCombs - The Drive Home

For our first ever Exhume Premiere, we reached out to hip hop artist and producer Choker (@chokerchokerchoker) from Michigan. After listening to his first project entitled "Die Slow" which released early May 2015 we had to make contact for an exclusive release. His artistry is evident as you move through the EP with minimal galactic abstract beats, raw lyrics  and a taste of his singing abilities. 

"On & On"
In his exclusive premiere for Exhume, Choker delivers yet again. Focussing in on all his strengths from production, rapping, singing and writing, Choker jumps right out the gate and instantly starts flowing with confidence and playfulness. As the track progresses Choker fixates in on his ability to carry the listener through the remainder of the track using his raspy singing style and instrumental break with the catchy chorus of "On & On & On...

We had the opportunity to ask Choker a few questions and this is what we got in return.

"my name is chris. i'm 19, from all over michigan. i started producing about a year ago this month but i've been writing since elementary school. my influences are lauryn hill, melody's echo chamber, prince, imogen heap (especially the frou frou days), the hidden beach recordings unwrapped series, r. kelly, girls with pastel hair, beenie man, film/videogame soundtracks, fleetwood mac, nujabes & of course dilla. way too many to name haha pretty much anything that makes me feel like allen iverson in 2001."

In this episode of Off To The Future we introduce to you, autumn keys (@autumnkeys), an 18 year old producer based out of Mead, Colorado. We caught up with autumn keys and asked him to describe his process and style. Check out what he had to say.

"My production style is very laid back I feel. I start every song messing around on my full 88 key graded hammer action keyboard until I find a progression I like, then I fuss around on fabfilter one or massive until I get a really soft and textured sounding synth, and then I roll with that. Sometimes I start with an e-piano just depending on how I want the song to feel. And my favorite thing to do is create small sounding parts that just get really close to the ear so I would describe my music as headphone music for sure.. Get to know autumn keys a little better via the 10th edition of Off To The Future.

In this episode of Off To The Future we introduce to you, K u r o (@yungkuro), a 17 year old producer based out of the U.K. We asked K u r o a few questions and this is what he told us. 

"I’ve been fooling around with music for a bit more than a year now. I don’t come from a very musical background but a wide variety of influences have always been around since before I can remember. Names that come up would range from Led Zeppelin to Gorillaz and even Buena Vista Social Club. I can’t say that I have a specific source of inspiration but i think Mr. Carmack was the person who really got me into making music. Every now and then, I’ll just come across someone who’s ideas or concept sparks something in me. Like at the moment, I’m still struggling to get over how brilliant the Tennyson duo are.       

There’s not much I can say about my own sound though as I feel that music solely depends on the listener, no matter the genre, the mood or whatever, as long as it touches them, that’s all that counts. Every track I take on bares little relation to the previous as I’m always looking for a new idea or feeling as if out of fear of falling into a formula. Nonetheless, I very much admire people who have come up with their own sound and hope that one day people can recognise my music as a kind of it’s own.        

I can however say that I have a particular attraction for blending acoustic and synthesised sounds and I’m addicted to traditional Japanese music and jazz."

"I'm 26 years old from the UK. The thought process behind the EP, it was more of a happy mistake.. I made probably about 15-16 beats that i wanted to put together for separate beat tapes but in my mind they just didn't quite fit together, so in the end I decided to just take my favourite tracks from those sessions and put them together into this EP. I guess for inspiration for my music I always want to make something that has a certain "feeling" or "mood" to it (hence the name for the EP), something that can make you nostalgic, or take you to another place in your imagination."

Where are you from and how old are you?

H - i'm in nyc right but originally from taipei, taiwan. i'm 21.

Can you describe your style / sound and influences / inspiration?

H - i don't think i've found my style yet-- but the starting point for me was coming across the work that's been done by the lofi/beat community on soundcloud (like, imagine finding out about bsd.u, illsugi, and tuamie at the same time) so im definitely influenced by that. also, the homie @rgry  installed ableton on my laptop for me, so he was really the one who put me on. that was in 2014.. since then i've been trying to compose more, teach myself chord progressions... there's still miles to go for me before i can claim a style, i think. but in an ideal world i would want it to sound like ryuichi sakamoto meets dj premier meets joao gilberto... or something like that haha.

What are you using to create your productions and what can we expect from you moving forward?

H - right now im using ableton, the sp404 and a midi keyboard my friend lent me. i do want to get my hands on a synthesizer soon though. as much as i love making loops, looking for samples and learning about jazz has inspired me to try and compose more-- so i'm looking forwards to putting some of those experiments out in the next month or two!"

matthew im (@matthewim) releases his debut EP entitled "Munchies" via Toronto label Exhume Music. matthew im, the Toronto based producer, is a lofi hiphop producer that dabbles in sample based music while pulling in elements from jazz and 90's hiphop. Created through out late evening hours, these are the leftovers (food pun) that couldn't get any features. While indulging in Munchies you get a taste of all these elements, from jazz trumpets to Dilla samples and even classic Cheech and Chong vocals to start the EP. After Releasing K Y E E N 's (@kayinm)(previously known as KAYIN) single trynsmoke we hooked up with the 24 year old Philadelphia producer to drop his debut EP entitled Everything is Nothing.  Using vocal samples from John Carpenter's film They Live, juxtaposed into chill lofi beats, K Y E E N mashes the two together to offer up a dreamy escape. Everything is Nothing was inspired by K Y E E N 's belief that even though there's all types of craziness going on in the world, at the end of the day this is just one journey of many so there's no need to stress about it kinda like nothing really matters, this is all temporary. So we should all just chill out.

chuckee. (@orangesodabandit) aka Sean is an 18 year old residing in Dream Land, Texas (like the Kirby games). His style is sort of situational and emotional. "When I make lo-fi bumps I just kinda do whatever I feel and I like the way it sounds"

The inspiration for making Skylines came from having to scrap an entire album of "not-as-good" beats from his time with Ableton and starting fresh with FL Studio. Gaining inspiration by going outside and just enjoying all of what summer kinda meant, chuckee. ended up packing in all those vibes, feelings and sun rays into a few beats that resulted into something he really enjoyed.

chuckee.(@orangesodabandit) releases his LP entitled "Beaters" via Toronto based label Exhume Music. chuckee., the 18 year old Dream Land, Texas based producer, is a hiphop producer that dabbles in sample based music while pulling in marquee jazz loops and fuses them with his percussion arrangements. 

We caught up with the 18 year old chuckee. to ask him about his inspiration behind the LP, current influences, album title choice and how Beaters differs from his Skyline EP. 

chuckee. had this to say 

"The name "Beaters" is a streetwear word for shoes that you have that you always wear that are kinda beat up and dirty, and that's what these beats reminded me of when I made em so I named the tape after them.

As far as sampling, I just pulled from everything like jazz, bossa nova, soul, etc. I love sampling everything I can find and this tape wasn't much different.

Since it's more in the springtime and I'm on my way to college, "Beaters" was a lot more happy than mellow like skylines was. I'm trying out new styles so the might've had something to do with it too haha.

I'm inspired mainly by June Blaze's style of making beats the most, between him, monomau and Flamingosis definitely.

As for what's next for me? I might have a little something coming in the summer so be on the look out."

LYFE (@lyfebarnes) the 22 year old Lo-Fi hip hop producer based out of Lamego , Portugal gives us his project entitled "Moves Pretty Fast."

The tape is a collection of beats made in different moments of my life. A compilation of mixed feelings with each track from sad to dreamy and even  happy moments. It shows the anxiety within life and the constant pressure of always thinking that life is Moving Pretty Fast and something needs to be done. oooslo (@ooslo), the 16 year old beatmaker based in Wellington, New Zealand releases his my second EP entitled departure. 

'Departure' comes from the concept of escaping from the world itself and getting lost in your thoughts. This project has a lot of emphasis on meditation, and just to relax while creating an entrancing atmosphere.

In beatmaking ooslo's biggest inspirations would be oofoe and Wun Two, particularly the intoxicating simplicity of their tracks. The atmospheric sounds of producers such as lxced and Nuages were also a strong influence for this EP.
