About “Something in the Way”

We are excited to announce that Palberta's new single, "Something in the Way," will be out on 8/5. Since the release of the acclaimed Roach Goin' Down, Ani, Lily, and Nina have been busy touring the U.S., releasing a live benefit album and opening for Bikini Kill at Brooklyn Steel. All the while, they have been writing and perfecting new songs, a few of which entered the band's sets before the global pandemic shut live music down and postponed their first U.K./Europe tour, originally scheduled for April.   

"Something in the Way" marks the first Palberta release tracked in a professional studio environment. They found a great recording partnership with Matt Labozza (Palm, Shimmer) and took easily to putting down their new material in a studio setting while still experimenting with song-structure, as they do on the outro of "Something in the Way," a repeating motif from John Coltrane's "A Love Supreme." 

The recording of "Something in the Way" achieves a clarity not heard on past Palberta releases. From the harmony vocals to the guitars that chime and caterwaul, Palberta's singular sound is brought into focus in Matt Labozza's recording. Below are some words from the band about how the song came to be and what it means to them.

About "Something in the Way" from Palberta 

"Something in the Way" started as many Palberta songs do, with one person playing a drum, guitar, or bass riff and then the other two building off of that initial feeling. As usual, we frantically but carefully guided each other to the end of the song. When we got there, we found ourselves fading into a tricked-out looped fragment of John Coltrane's "A Love Supreme." Coltrane's melody has a direct connection for us to our beautiful friend Pablo Ramirez, who passed in 2019. His view on life—"LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL LIFE IS IN COLOR LIFE IS A W A Y"—impacted us all in such a positive way, and his beauty and genuine LOVE of life lives on through the thousands of people that he blessed through meeting. We dedicate this song to Psplifff and his mother, the amazing Mammasplifff, and all the beautiful people on the right side of history showing up right now. We love you! - Palberta

Out today the new evocative second single, ‘The Archer’, from Faten Kanaan's new album ‘A Mythology of Circles’ (mastered by Heba Kadry) released on November 13. A transcendent composition with swathes of shimmering electronics overdubbed in real time, it’s beguiling and majestic. Double AA side includes the equally hypnotising companion piece, ‘Hesperides’.

The new album explores cyclical repetitions in nature and time, and the allegories about them. These re-conjured stories are an attempt to temper the anthropocentric hubris. Reminders to revere nature without the need to overpower it. To embrace ‘mystery’ in our feats of discovery and innovation. The album also has an autobiographical side: a story of movement, migration, and return. Of renewing hope in the face of political and environmental struggles.

Inspired by cinematic forms and mythological story structures: from sweeping landscapes and quiet romances, to patterned tensions and dream sequences; Faten brings an earthy, visceral touch to electronic music. In symbiosis with technology is an appreciation for the vulnerability of human limitations and nuances.

‘A Mythology of Circles’ will be available on limited edition coloured vinyl via Dinked along with LP and CD on 13th November.

Faten Kanaan - The Archer

Lunchbox's Tim Brown and Donna McKean have been making records in their Oakland, California basement for two decades, inspired by 1960s/70s AM-radio pop and TV show theme music, punk, C86, and mod à la the Creation and the Jam. From the sonically-inventive indiepop of "The Magic of Sound" (1999) to the dub-influenced psychedelia of "Evolver" (2001) to the critically-acclaimed bubblegum of "Lunchbox Loves You" (2013), the couple have established a sound all their own.

Their new album for Slumberland, "After School Special," finds them at the height of their powers of songcraft and performance. Donna's bass playing stakes out stylistic territory somewhere between Carol Kaye and John Entwhistle while Tim's guitar is equal parts 12-string jangle and clipped Orange Juice-esque funk. Horns by Gary Olson (Ladybug Transistor) and longtime collaborator Jeremy Goody drive the record from beginning to end. Evelyn Davis' delay-drenched keyboards combine with whispers of analog tape feedback to give the record an otherworldly vibe in keeping with its lyrical themes.

There, favorite seasons (autumn) and animals (cats), appear alongside love and death, ghosts and reincarnation. From the shimmering opener "Dream Parade" to the horn-driven mod-pop of "Hide and Seek," the groovy sixties R&B vibe of "I Really Wanna Know" and the haunting male-female vocal stylings of the  album-closing title track, the textures shift while the unity of artistic vision remains. Catchy as hell and beautifully packaged, "After School Special" is Lunchbox at their very best.

Power up! Our first new release of 2021 will be a debut album of odd-pop from Scottish group Buffet Lunch! Punchy, often thoughtful and pleasingly surreal at times ‘The Power of Rocks’ is an album filled with imagery and humour, packed with zestful tunes and lyrical weight too. Buffet Lunch’s songs are vigorous excursions, meandering into clattersome terrain as often as hiking up into the breezy, melodious foothills. The desire to lead the listener along on a curious tale helps tie things together. This is a debut LP of wide-ranging and personal themes, from irritation with out of touch politicians, to love letters to seaside living, to even the frailty and confusion of old age.
