After a hugely successful showcase back in March of last year, we welcomed back one of Berlin's best known clubs who brought their very own showcase to Brighton by featuring a selection of their top residents. 

Ritter Butzke is located on the ground floor of a former factory in Kreuzberg. It began as an illegal club in 2007, but went official two years later. The venue has three main dance floors, plus an outdoor courtyard that's open in the summer. The DJs and the crowd are most often Berliners. This dimly-lit huge club is always bursting at the seams and is hidden away in a large complex of buildings on Moritzplatz. It has certainly achieved legendary fame in the city and worldwide.

We caught up with Ritter Butzke's very own Label head Matthias Schuell, who after impressing so many Brightonians last year, it was only natural that we invited him back to the South Coast.

After a solid education in multiple classical instruments and drums Matthias Schuell took an unlikely choice to enter the electronic scene as a producer, DJ and live act. Quickly after the breakup of his international successful project “BAAL” in January 2019 he concentrated on his growing solo career. Always keeping an energetic vibe in his productions, he tries out different tempos and styles and creates music with a broad portfolio of sounds and instruments.

In his powerful live sets he uses his talent to support his music with live drums and piano elements. His first EP „Scarabaeus“ in June 2018 on Niconé's imprint Dantze was played by Joris Voorn, Animal Picnic, Moonwalk and many more and quickly took the pole position to become the number one song of the Dantze label on Beatport. His EP „Hoodoo“ on Einmusika in May 2019 charted in the Beatport Top 10 Releases in the genres „Techno“ and „Melodic House & Techno“ for several weeks. Since 2018 he holds a residency and works as the label manager at the Ritter Butzke Club Berlin.

Mila Journée is a DJ and music producer on the rise in the electronic scene and is appointed as a new Brazilian talent. She released her first track in early 2017 and in this short period already has a sizable catalog, with over 120 tracks released. She is known for her melodic productions and in her latest releases, she has reached prominent positions on Top Hype and on official Beatport charts. As a DJ, Mila Journée has a refined feeling that engages her audience in a set artistically constructed from the ethereal sound emanating from her productions and repertory.

After spending most of their youth listening to
Hip-Hop and Rap music, Marco and Luca got to know
another kind of music: one which would simply not
let go of them anymore, and speak to their soul.
Both became immersed into House and Techno. Because
they have a diverse library, their music style is
hard to classify. But their unique sounds has some
things in common: Deep, groovy bass lines, sweet
melodies, and impressive synth that transcend space

and time to bring the listener to another, new di-
mension. C’mon is delivering the right track at the

right time to always catch the vibe of the floor.
Their music library consists of tracks from house
to techno music.
The last years were very special for C’mon. They
played many gigs in the capital and in cities like
Hamburg, Munich and Paris. This then led to a big
Colombia tour at the end of 2017. After playing a
lot of successful gigs in South America, they came
back to establish themselves in Berlin and all over
Germany as a very powerful and special DJ act. From
2018 to 2019 they went to South America again to

play another Colombia Tour and had their first ex-
periences in Peru. Back in Germany they are working on their first releases to show the crowd their very
own interpretation of House and Techno music. Their
first EP will be coming soon.
Over the past years, they established their own
collective by the name of never.mind. 
Consisting of 4 DJ‘s, as well as a big crew of friends and supporters 
behind them, never.mind has filled multiple
spaces in both Europe and South America with excep-
tional sounds. After moving to Berlin in 2016, C’mon

has also started bringing the never.mind experience
to his new home town, already welcoming a lot of
key players from all over Germany into the techno capital.
At the end of 2019, they are going to South America
again to play another tour and host the La Playita Music Festival as well as the Electronic Art Festival in Colombia.

What do you do to get into a creative state?
"Sometimes the machines just inspire me, sometimes I open a bottle of wine."

Where do you draw your inspiration from?
"Situations that I’m finding myself in in, the feelings I have, technology around me."

What do you love most about being an artist?
"Touching peoples hearts man. Seeing happy faces at gigs or getting messages of people that are moved by my music gives me a lot of strength."

How do you stay focussed in a world of constant distraction?
"Just turn off notifications & zero in on the machines. I have a lot of trouble focussing, so eliminating distractions helps me a lot."

Do you have a morning routine?
"Hell no, I’m not a morning person!"

What fascinates you about your art from?
"One guy sitting in his basement can do it all, create an atmosphere & make people move and feel – the ability to convey emotion through a technological intermediary."

What, for you, is the purpose of art?
"Expressing yourself through a medium & let other people feel by coming in contact with your work. Art does not necessarily has to have a function, in contrast to design – a lot of dance music (including mine) is more design than art."

What is sacred to you?
"Staying true to myself, integrity is key. I like the Egyptian afterlife concept of having your heart weighed against a feather."

What is your opinion on success?
"Success is when you look back on the path you treaded & get a warm, fuzzy feeling."

What is your opinion on failure?
"Failure is such a loaded term. The absence of success is not failure & failing a goal you set for yourself is not actually a bad thing. Every „failure“ is something you can learn from and improve."

What would your 16 year old you think about what you’re doing today?
"Since my 16 year old self was already dabbling with Ableton he would be like 'Damn you have all that gear - make more music!'“

What makes you laugh?
"Dogs. Dogs are awesome."

In which ways could the scene improve in the future?
"Right now there’s too much focus on self-marketing via social media & less on creativity and skill. This is in part due to an over-saturation of the market which makes it hard to be the cream rising to the top. I hope that in the future we find a way to honor quality & dedication and focus less on shiny pictures & follower metrics. 
Women are still underrepresented in my scene (especially on the production side) and sexism is still a thing. Hopefully, we can be more welcoming & kind towards dedicated female newcomers and have a more diverse palette of creative output together. 
What also bothers me is the stagnation. E.g., once there is a successful sound, a bunch of copycats swoop in and the market is flooded with „same-ish“, uninspired works. How did we evolve from ten years ago? Right now a lot of the new stuff that is most visible sounds like boring, recycled 90s stuff. Electronic music & especially Techno was once a promise of uncharted sonic territory and possiblity, so why do we always go back to the same 909 Drums and Acid Lines?"

Who will considerably give direction to the scene soon?
"Right now, we’re at a turning point due to the COVID-19 quarantine. After the dust settles I really hope that the underground spirit returns and a lot of new & creative artists emerge and get a chance to be heard. This is an extinction-level event for the clubbing scene, but after a forest fire new life always springs. And I really hope that the younger generation of artists will rise to the occasion and bring a new sonic diversity to the scene."

Favorite release at the moment & of all times?
"At the moment I really dig the first Koelsch Album 1977. 
Favorite release of all times is a hard pick. With Teeth by Nine Inch Nails and Gui Boratto’s Chromophobia have a special place in my heart."
