Dolenz returns with the follow up to his debut album ‘Lingua Franca’ with another dystopian sci-fi inspired release entitled ‘Golden Spike’.

Once again exploring the fragility of human existence, for the title track he enlisted legendary UK artist Jehst. Spitting over bubbling retro-futurist boom bap Jehst’s lyrics eerily mirror the situation that we currently find ourselves in during the coronavirus lockdown as he raps about being stuck in a “no-fly zone” and the general public being content with “staring at the screen” whilst society falls apart before their eyes.

On the EP Dolenz fuses astrological documentaries with his signature sonic palette. He explores various tempos from the slow psychopathic chugger ‘Murder This’ to the frenetic boom bap inspired ‘Kill This’, culminating in the spaced-out electro banger ‘Dead That’. Nestled amongst that Dolenz dissected a vintage drum break to construct a footwork-inspired acid journey called ‘Polyprop’. 

The track is accompanied by a sparse electronic remix by renowned UK producer Sumgii (Swamp 81/Potent Funk). Dolenz also worked with South West-based filmmaker Dean Puckett (Grasp The Nettle Films) to create the accompanying video. As the video was produced during lockdown, creating new footage was not an option, Dean sourced vintage science, biological, public health and science fiction films from the Prelinger and A/V Geeks Archives then spun them into a narrative about a man who is whisked away from his native planet to aid population on a new one, his dreams filled of haunting memories of his loved ones.

The Empath EP is an assortment of tracks produced over the last year or so that highlight a current space of my journey in sound and my path as an artist and human being. Some of my most honest work to date. These songs lie heavily under the influence of experimental drum & bass and jungle, all while reflecting back to dark ambient and autonomic landscapes. An idealistic blend between sound system and headphone music.

Spread across the whole spectrum of this EP lie a variation of sounds created from soft and hard synth experimentation, resulting in textured atmospheres, hypnotic drones, evolving melodies, all while synchronizing with the contrast of warm sub rhythms and acid bass. The direction in creating these songs were heavily guided from my approach of drum break/percussion manipulation, and intricate sampling from banked sound design sessions over the years that are intimately personal to me upon periods of life I can reflect on. I’ve always been a heavy feeling person and throughout the process of creating these songs, it’s been quite rewarding to learn more about myself, about music, about culture and most importantly, how to live a better life. It’s all just part of my story and pushing myself to create alterity within music and art. Insight into foresight. I’m fortunate to progress and keep moving.
