Two hot remixes of O.N.O. electro-pop smash ‘Gran Music’? Yes please.

Running Back artist Enzo Elia does away with the light touches of the original in favour of something moodier and more atmospheric. Rugged electro dissonance abounds in the bass synth, which chugs away menacingly beneath light snares and driving hi-hat and ride patterns. The breathy vocals take on a different character in this darker context, creating a trippy feel with their hazy tones. Sustained pads build the mood towards the break as the bass synth unfurls its gnarly teeth. Rasping textures and incessant percussive hits fire up the breakdown, leading to crescendo of bleeping arpeggios that hark back to progressive house in its heyday. Throw in some tense stabs and intense, distorted pulses and you’ve got yourself an all-encompassing riot of sound.

Man-of-the-moment Captain Mustache lays his Parisian touch down on the second mix, opting for throbbing analog bass thrusts and ticking old skool percussion, before unleashing a fizzing lead arpeggio and breakbeat pattern that gives the track an entirely new dimension. Old skool electro with modern pop sensibility, it’s a killer rework that’s sensitive to the charms of the original while adding an element of beefiness to the proceedings.

Support for French duo O.N.O. has come from the likes of Chloe, Jennifer Cardini, Terr and Lauren Laverne from BBC 6 Music as well as fashion publication Numero Mag. They’ve been enjoying their own residency in Paris, and have plenty more tasty music waiting in the wings.

Exclusive: Mano Le Tough - Kakooja

It’s an Irish-man in Rhine-Main, it’s Mano Le Tough on Live At Robert Johnson. After EPs, LPs and single contributions to labels like Permanent Vacation, Maeve or Pampa Niall Mannion, Mano Le Tough’s real name, delivers his debut EP, Holographic Witness, on the prestigious LARJ-imprint. In total musical dedication, a devotion to sounds and strains of pure deepness with a dreamy touch, a nuance in Mano’s tracks he’s become acquainted with, the artist weaves his way through and around stabbing synths and pads to create musical pieces for eternity or as long people can hear. Speaking of the before mentioned characteristics, it’s the B1 of the EP, namely Kakooja that catches one’s attention as the track contains everything a musical piece needs to be remembered as classy. Despite or for this very reason the floating or repetitive chord-arrangement of Kakooja - not sure if the title is a reference to Tokyo Ghoul - the track lures one into its vibe with its hypnotically seeming cleverly merged soundscapes that highlight the momentum it creates from start to finish.

Mano Le Tough's EP Holographic Witness will be released on Live At Robert Johnson on September 9th, 2022.

On his debut album Feelin’, Ivory marries hi-tech sound design with the emotional pull of house for 10 tracks shaped by a multitude of club music and R&B. Album opener “Voices” infuses noirish melodratma with playful, pitch-shifted vocals that instantly lighten the mood. Next up, “Blank” draws from a similar blueprint, bolstered by low end pressure and ruptured rhythms. 

Ivory explains how “Do It My Way” embodies the underlying concept of Feelin’; “taking something and reworking it into a new shape that reflects your own personality as artist”. A cool electro cut warmed through with a dreamy hook, here, uplifting piano chords set the stage for what happens next. “Feelin’” is a dancefloor slammer, a healthy balance of tension and release that comes with an invite to conquer the floor. Heating up the album’s core, Tagliaferri works up an appetite for “I Need You Now”; a hulking warehouse cut built from barrelling, muscular kicks and a diced up diva house-esque vocal.

For “What I Do,” we are transported to a land of French touch with high-voltage basslines aplenty while the propulsive “Try” pulls the crowd back into room one for a huge, anthemic floor-filler underpinned by jagged synths. Ivory describes “Don’t Lose Control” as “one of the more emotional moments of the LP”; a track centered around dreamy pads, smooth house synth stabs and a disembodied post-human voice that sounds eerily poetic.

The LP’s penultimate track “Steps” leans on swirling, pearlescent keys and a sweet, balearic-tinged melody before “I Know What You Want” offers the ultimate sign-off statement, slicing through the razor-sharp mesh of synthwork with dueling vocals and sparky beats. Ivory creates his music by working with hardware, plug-ins, samples, and field recordings and he bundles all of this know-how into a distinctive album that lends itself to both reflection and liberation.
