After last month’s detour by Mexico for the Bluehost EP ‘We Need You’, Jerry Bouthier’s London-based label Continental hops across the channel to hook up with Middle for the release of his stunning debut single ‘In Your Way’.

Located by the Mediterranean Montpellier, France’s 8th city twinned with Rio de Janeiro, Barcelona and Louisville USA, is famous for its huge student community and thriving nightlife. Part of the city’s bubbling electronic/dance scene 24 year-old Steve ‘Middle’ Stullgens is a talented musician who stands out from the lot for crafting… UK house. Surprisingly on the ball, fresh, innovative and damn funky, Middle’s compositions are not only unusual coming from a Frenchman, they’re also tastily groundbreaking not least for their musicality, inspired chord sequences and sonic dynamics.

A self-taught musician who started playing bass in punk bands at the age of twelve, Middle soon caught the programming bug and started to produce tunes in his bedroom, exploring genres until he eventually settled on house with a strong UK flavor a couple of years ago (“I love it cos it’s so groovy!”). After a string of free downloads which quickly attracted attention in Europe and as far as the US (his first track ‘Girl’ was snapped up by EDM.com and has clocked up 75,000 Soundcloud plays to date), Middle’s name’s soon getting bigger and bigger in the right circles, and deservedly so.

‘In Your Way’s no-nonsense original is a beautifully chiseled piece of futuristic house, both moving and griping at the same time, complete with euphoric peaks and enchanting melodic breakdowns (that vibraphone). Peppered by snippets of tweaked soulful vocals, synth chords and wooshes pulsate like heartbeats to the repetitive 4/4 injecting powerful tension to the dancefloor.

Remix-wise, Continental labelmates Reflex – coincidentally also From Montpellier – deliver a dreamy rewrite that’s still 4/4 but slower and sexier. Another local, DJ/producer Kaviar exercises his future beats magic and turn things around dramatically. Next Sergey Ledovskiy’s project Ledaux – a Russian based in San Francisco - takes the song into housey disco territory. To finish - other new French kid on the block - Aimeric Miriel AKA The Vein offers his own take on futuristic beats, soundtracky and vibey.
