2014 led Blue Hawaii around the world. Over multiple visits to Russia, China/SE Asia, Mexico, Japan, Europe and the US, it felt like everything was coming up opposite Untogether, the album we made. Instead of being secluded in a Montreal apartment writing a fragmented break-up record, we were travelling vast distances, rediscovering each other as close friends and tying together radically different cultures. Our music came to reflect that. Live, everything sounded more together and higher energy than the record in an effort to find common ground with all those different audiences. 

It's the end of the year, so to commemorate the global underground touring we did— to all the people who were interested in coming to and putting on a Blue Hawaii show in Bangkok or Vilnius— we decided to put together a free mixtape of edits —  somewhere between the dreamy record and the banging live show. 

In 2015, Ra will focus on her other band, BRAIDS, who have just completed a beautiful, deeply emotional, new record which I am very excited to see come into the world. I will use what I’ve learnt this year DJing and roaming the earth to produce more music this winter —  planning on releasing material in a similar vein to this mixtape and hitting SXSW this March as DJ Blue Hawaii.. holding down the fort until Ra and I can record another album…   something 4 y’all to look forward to! ---;)  Agor (the boy in Blue Hawaii)

New Strut Records compilation documenting the vibrant soul, AOR, jazz funk and disco scene across Hawaii in 1979-1985. Despite great musicianship and high quality studios, many of the recordings never made it to the mainland. Compiler Roger Bong of Aloha Got Soul brings together 16 rare tracks on one album for the first time.

One of the leading bands from Hawaii's 1970s scene, Aura rose through the ranks in military clubs and similar venues. A family band consisting of eight siblings at its core, by the mid-1970s they had become the first local group to perform at the hottest disco in town, The Point After, where they remained the club’s headlining act for the next 10 years.

‘2 Minutos De Um Novo Dia’ – pacey samba-funk-MPB that originally appeared on a 7” from 1969 released on Odeon Brazil. Soaring vocals, strings and horns over alternating full and half-time funk drum breaks. Very big indeed.

‘Candomble’ has been a resident in our DJ sets for a long, long time. A retrained, deeper opening section drops into drum heavy, rich uptempo jazzy-MPB. Super catchy vocal hooks and piano lines sit over the top from start to finish. Taken from their self titled album from 1975 on RCA.

Tanukichan - The Blue Sky (Live at XPN)

Just an extension of the absolutely incredible and entirely too short "Cascavel" by Brasilian composer, Antonio Adolfo, off his "Viralata" Lp.

I fell in love with the music of Adolfo on my first trip to Brasil in 2008. Hetor at Tracks record shop in Baixo Gavea pulled out a copy of Feito Em Casa for me and explained to me it was important for being Brasil's first ever independently released Lp. One song on it in particular, "Aonde Você Vai?", captivated me and I began to seek out everything else by this master composer and musician. 

"Cascavel" is one of my favorite tunes of his that I dug up...that fat bass line, punctuated slightly by notes from his electric piano...those crisp drums...the bongos percolating in the background... and damn, those horns! This song never fails to bring a smile to my face. The only problem was that the original version, at just under three minutes, always ended way to soon. This is my attempt to fix that.

As always, if you enjoy the edit, do yourself and the artist a favor and seek out the original (as well as everything else he ever recorded!).
