After releasing the lead single ‘Death By Dimitri’ (described as “the wonky love child of Travis Scott” – Jamz Supernova) Tony Njoku releases intense new hiphop collaborative single ‘KILLTONY’ out 12th February alongside his EP of the same name.

Adopting more of that genre-bending aesthetic he is getting known for, ‘KILLTONY’ showcases the artist as one of the more diverse and adventurous artists working today. Taking influence from the trap-inspired hip-hop sound and combining it with a fresh and ethereal sound palette and production gives this new release a distinct and remarkable vision that sees him take his rich sound to a whole new level.

Speaking about the latest single, Tony said, “The title track is about killing ego, facing your shortcomings, owning up to your bad traits, mistakes and wrong doings…. all in an attempt to elicit radical change.” 

Tony Njoku is a British-Nigerian electronic music producer and songwriter and in addition to his musical accolades Tony has played widely across Europe, supporting acts including Kokoko!, Gaika, Anna Von Hauswolff, Laura Misch, Puma Blue, IDER and Rival Consoles, appearing at key tastemaker festivals like Green Man, Simple Things, Sonic City and Gilles Peterson’s We Out Here. 

Tony says “the EP is a short collection of some songs I began working on during quarantine. They are mainly influenced by modern hip-hop production and also feature the most rap vocal performances in any of my releases yet. The EP showcases another shift in style to add to my growing arsenal. The beats are aggressive, catchy, fun and weird.”

His self-penned and produced songs have been described as ‘strikingly evocative soundscapes, managing to make even the shortest pop songs sound like epic adventures.’

With a sound that is both experimental and delicate, emotional and danceable – like a mad fusion of Sampha and Aphex Twin – Tony is a magnificently talented and versatile artist, performing solo with his unique mix of raw, vulnerable vocals and electronic mastery.

Following the release of two 12"s in the past year, White Flowers return with the Within A Dream EP,  a recently recorded four song collection to be released on 15th January 2021. Alongside digital formats, it will be pressed to 12" transparent vinyl in an edition of 300.  

The four tracks on the EP came together earlier this year during various periods of enforced isolation, and somewhat inevitably reflect the conditions of their provenance, exploring themes of dissociation, multiple selves, and the role of the individual in an increasingly strange and fragmented world. Co-produced with Ali Chant (PJ Harvey, Perfume Genius, Portishead), Within A Dream combines home and studio recordings in ways that display the duo’s growing ability to switch between grand sonic gestures and subtle sonic abstractions.

Alongside the three originals which explore the outer edges of post-punk, dreampop and shoegaze in increasingly alien ways, is a beguiling cover of Mama Cass’ ‘Didn’t Want to Have to Do It’. As with their version of Red House Painters' 'Katy Song' from their previous 12”, it's provides another example of how defined White Flowers' aesthetic has become, as they’re effortlessly able to shape the music of others to their own vision. Indeed, as with all their videos and records to date, the artwork for the single is again created entirely by the band, another example of their intentions to create a defined White Flowers universe distinctly their own.

"Red Clouds is about those dewy-eyed experiences we have of love, of people moving on, of moments you truly don’t want to end. I was listening to a lot of lo-fi 80’s music, the kinds of songs that bands were recording in their garages or local DIY studios on the first home-studio budget tape machines, and it inspired me to indulge in that world. A world of simple songs centred around innocent romance and love with lyrics so effortless in their attempt to be anything other than 3 minutes of pure nostalgia."
