"My aim was to make something that defines where I'm at as an artist and with music today. It's downtempo, sexy, swamp, slick, reflective, pretty, and fun. It was recorded with a Varia RDM20 rotary mixer. Intended to be played late, after a party, or with a lucky person one night. You'll find sounds from South America, the UK, Berlin, France, Jamaica, Switzerland, Ukraine, and many more. 

The past two years have been about discovering new sounds and revisiting some old ones. I was raised in an uncanny Christian group in Savannah, Georgia, that restricted me from a lot in life. One of the only liberating things about that group was my exposure to the music and dance of other cultures. The Guatemalan and Mexican families taught me about salsa, meringue, and bachata. My cousins from North Carolina are black, they showed me house music. The soft nods to my love for these early introductions and moments are in this mix. Blended with the reality of what I hear now." 

NSA (Cameron Allen), a multidisciplinary artist known for his art and DJ work, emerged from coastal Savannah Georgia to arrive in Atlanta where he now resides. The swampy marshland landscape of his early years sets a clear narrative for an eerie and unconventional force laced with an upbringing around latin dance, ghettotech, and electro-house music. Since his first breakthrough release praised by Pitchfork at the age of 19, NSA has spun for queer spearheads such as Deep South and Honcho, co-founded the Hz Like Hell brand and Stroke parties, and is a driving force of the Atlanta underground with his infamous after parties. His penchant for challenging and strange sounds keeps the floor hooked.

"There are so many different takes on reggaeton." The Latine supergroup discusses dembow, Afro-Caribbean music and more in this Playing Favourites live from C2C Festival.

This week's RA Exchange revisits one of Resident Advisor's flagship live formats, Playing Favourites, where we bring guests onto the pod to walk through their musical influences and play us some tracks that have been formative in their personal and creative development. 

This week, we're honouring El Dia de la Raza—which happened on October 12th—an occasion that remembers the colonisation of Latin America and pays tribute to its heritage and cultural diversity. Our guest is Sangre Nueva, a trio made up of the artists DJ Python, Florentino and Kelman Duran. They all come from different backgrounds: Kelman is a Dominican multidisciplinary artist, Florentino is a musician of Colombian heritage signed to XL Recordings and DJ Python is Ecuadorian-Argentinian, releasing prolifically under a number of aliases in the worlds of ambient and club-adjacent music. 

Together, their style explores pan-Caribbean musical styles, especially dembow, which is experiencing a parallel renaissance in the underground and commercial dance music spheres. In this conversation, they talk to journalist Christine Kakaire from last year's C2C Festival about what it means to approach Latin music from an experimental perspective to bring an amalgamation of Caribbean and Spanish-speaking musical cultures into their work. They also reflect on the stigma that was attached to reggaeton for a long time and the songs that represent its reclamation in the world of contemporary club music culture. Introduce yourself: 

I go by the alias BYZARRA, also known as DIE/ASPORA. I'm a DJ, curator, and artist based in MPLS. I’m a resident of several different collectives in the Twin Cities including Gothess, Acme, and Crimes Against Ravers (C.A.R).


What was your inspiration for this mix:

When it came to the overall sound, I’ve been down a bit of a rabbit hole when looking for tracks that both feel very nostalgic but still far away. I’m always a sucker for anything that feels aquatic or interstellar. That checks out with this running idea of dreaming/fantasizing about something completely blissful far away from all this pain and hopelessness in the world that we’re living in right now. What better place to get lost and escape somewhere else than a dance floor? The central theme I kept returning to when I was digging for specific sounds and textures was the idea of finding the smallest shred of joy and catharsis for yourself in a time when everything felt so bleak and uncertain.

I’ve been listening heavily to Cupakke’s latest release, I’d probably put on her track “Queef”


Where was the first place you played?

Back in 2019, I made my debut at DEEPER, a monthly party held by my good friend MPLS DJ/promoter Angelica Ottavia at the Red Room in Dinkytown. It’s not around anymore, I miss it terribly.

Advice to the new upcoming DJs: 

My best advice would be to practice! get familiar with club-standard equipment especially if you want to play gigs/festivals/raves. Dig for all kinds of music, not just bangers or peak time don’t be afraid to find stuff not entirely dance-floor focused, it keeps things interesting. Lastly, surround yourself with authentic people who constantly inspire you and see your vision, people who will add to your artistry, not just take from it.


What's next for you in 2024?:

Aiming for more out-of-town gigs, working towards bringing back a regular night of my own, and ultimately keep hustling & saving up so I can move out of Minneapolis within the next year.
