Deej (@deej248) is the man behind the Kooley High and The Groove Stage labels and has been a regular fixture on the pages of LVO with his always classy take on deep house. 

Now he is back with a brand new EP Night At the Beck showcasing both that deep house sound and also the deeper edges of disco.

Brooklyn-based musician, producer, and DJ Peter Matson returns to Bastard Jazz with a dance-floor ready 12” and digital EP, “The Right Way.” The EP builds on Peter’s 2019 release for the label - “Short Trips” - as well as his work as the bandleader for Underground System, and a slew of other solo and collaborative projects over the last two years.

Working from the ground up to produce a batch of 3 original tracks, Matson takes his sensibility as a DJ and musician and blends them into an unique whole, crafting sprawling arrangements into club-ready productions. With overall recording quality and ear for detail taking center stage, “The Right Way” boasts an impressive list of musical collaborators including a standout A-side feature from Ibibio Sound Machine’s vocalist Eno Williams on the Afro-Disco workout “Call and Answer.” Two beautifully conceived instrumentals on the flip-side dip into slow burning Italo (“The Right Way”) and Balearic (“PB (Ça Va)”) territories, while the UK duo Faze Action helm remix duty, pushing “Call and Answer” toward their signature Afro-meets-ProtoHouse & Disco vibe.

The EP weaves Matson’s affinity for club music with the African influences for which he is known, culminating in a release that is both genre-bending and timelessly danceable. “The Right Way” is out digitally on Bastard Jazz Recordings February 25th, 2022, with the 12” to follow shortly after.

A glowed embrace, a mystifying meander through twilight spaces, dipping between the shadows and the orange light, waiting for the moment when smiles abound and feelings muster….

Certain artists create captivating essences within their work, no matter what that work might be formalised as, and there are few better that conjure up a myriad of emotions than Maltese producer and multi-instrumentalist Melchior Sultana, who is releasing his new LP on the ever impressive Oath imprint.

Sultana seems intent to continue this exploration of sound and form with his new LP, ‘Self Reflection’, with plenty of his tried and tested motifs making appearances here. From the glittering, twinkling opener ‘Chill’, Sultana turns on all the styles he can muster, with power and melodic grace being manipulated with such intuitive creativity. Two acid tinged numbers, ‘Mirage’ and ‘Switch Up’, come next, and these cuts contrast Sultana’s beautifully considered chord progressions with something a little harder, and as a switch in the frequency it lends itself well for the next phase. Three gorgeous house tracks slide through the door next - ‘You and I’, with its calming vocal snippets and pulsating pad work; ‘Conclusions’, with its aquatic, simmering lead synth lines; and ‘Dogma’, with its perky, uplifting organ melody. ‘Heads Up’ is memorable for its skippy beat structure and its well defined spatial makeup, whilst the dance floor orientated (and aptly named) ‘Remember the Floor’ will have you dreaming of four walls and smoky lights. The record closes out with two superb numbers, ‘Don’t Look Back’ and ‘Module’, which see Sultana really go for it in regards to sequences and tones, and the results leaving a lasting imprint on the memory. As always, there’s a extreme sense of satisfaction to be had with this album, a spiritual joy that caresses the soul and enriches the mind, a duality that only artists such as Melchoir are able to achieve. Oath couldn’t be more thrilled to invite you into his latest dive.

Prolific disco/house producer James Curd is perhaps one of the undersung heroes of the scene. With hundreds of production credits to his name on every label worth its salt from DFA Records to Classic Music Company to Permanent Vacation to Lumberjacks In Hell — and of course, Exploited — he has serious skin in the game. It’s finally time for his debut album to make its mark on the world, rounding up 14 of his finest moments to date for Exploited and packaging them up into one joyous blend.
“‘Taken All This Time’ is a catalog of music that stays true to my life growing up in my critical formative years in Chicago” he explains. “I used to make tracks from beginning to end on an MPC2000. I had a studio in my room that was set up on a door that was held up by two overturned trash cans. If I was recording on the mic I had to shut my windows because I lived on the third floor above 90/94. Sometimes I would get WGCI bleeding into my speakers while I was trying to work. It was the best of times. I worked at a record store called Supreme most days. Then I would work on music till late and head out to the club. I had a residency with Derrick Carter, Gene Farris and Diz. I made so much music — especially in the brutal winters.”
You wouldn’t know that much of this record was made in the depths of winter, given the warm, balmy vibe that surrounds much of it. With his magical synth wizardry cutting against jazzy keys, disco/funk basslines, and sublime vocals, it’s a beautiful mix of sounds that is at home on the dancefloor as on the home stereo. Each track contains elements built on his MPC, with all keys, vintage synths, guitars and bass played live. “ In a time where so much music is pieced together by sample packs and drum loops this album is created brick by brick.... or beat by beat. Every keyboard sound was played on an actual keyboard in my studio. Guitars and bass were played in.”
The album draws its influences from ‘70s disco, ‘80s boogie and ‘90s deep house in equal measure, serving as a musical document of Curd’s upbringing. Beautiful vocals are provided by a diverse cast of singers and rappers, including Bear Who? Luke Million, Likasto, Natasha Lillith and KE, with other collaborative moments featuring Fred Everything and Karmon.
The prolific producer has previously worked with James Murphy for a release on his DFA Records label, and works on many film, TV and video game score projects, including for the ‘Grand Theft Auto’ series and 50 Cent’s show ‘The Oath’. But right now, it’s all about this beautiful collection of tracks, providing a milestone in his career that he will be able to look back on very proudly in years to come.
Single and Album artworks were done by James' friend Cody Hudson who is a Chicago based artist known for his graphic design contributions under the name Struggle Inc. and for the production of clean, multi-dimensional graphics, Cody's design aesthetic is part urban modernism, and part organic visual deconstruction.
His graphic work and paintings have been exhibited throughout the US, Europe and Japan including the Museum of Contemporary Art (Chicago), New Image Art (LA), Rocket Gallery (Tokyo), The Lazy Dog (Paris), & Andrew Rafacz (Chicago).
