The Egyptian Lover is a stone-cold legend. The LA producer and vocalist was one of the key creators of the electro sound in the early ‘80s, and his influence has been felt in the music of everyone from Dr. Dre and NWA to electronic producers like Jimmy Edgar. His contribution to this track elevates it to another level, adding a mystical, sensual tone to Aiwaska’s bold melodies. 

Tribal percussion laces the rolling beat as brooding bass swathes pass through the track’s undercurrent and the breathy vocal emerges. The first half of the track lets the vocal breath and the mood build, and it’s left to the breakdown to let the spine-tingling lead riff emerge in all its rasping glory. Old skool snare patterns give a nod to The Egyptian Lover’s heritage. There’s also an instrumental version for those scenarios when you just need to keep those heads down and focused. 

The Elektro Dub strips things down to a vocoder-infused, sparse arrangement where the mood is allowed to really infuse and percolate. The slow-burning vibe sucks you in, with heavy bass drops punctuating the head-bobbing beat, and the melodic elements sounding even bigger thanks to the space around them.

What started out as a vessel to release their own music, Ost & Kjex + Trulz & Robin’s Snick Snack Music is steadily becoming an outlet for Norwegian electronic music in the widest possible sense. The creative energy currently flowing from all corners of the country is something the boys couldn’t resist tapping into, leading to the release of Snick Snack Vol. 1 - Sounds from the Norwegian underground, a compilation aiming to show some of the diversity found throughout the country’s vibrant and freewheeling underground scene.

The tunes are provided by both new talent and established artists, keeping the label bosses’ love of the underground flowing. Be it through lo-fi house, minimal techno, eastern induced house, acid, esoteric techno, gothic impulses or classic vocal house; Snick Snack Vol. 1 is a celebration of this diversity.

Label co-runners Ost & Kjex are next up with Motown. The duo have been a staple in the Norwegian scene since they first emerged with the tune ”Cheeses & the Mary Jane” in 2002. Over time, Ost & Kjex have moved from sample based experimental house music to their own take on classic dance music, setting dance floors ablaze throughout the world in the process.

Welcoming Ukrainian artist The Organism to the TAU family with this delightful EP. Roman Yarmolenko began his career back in 1999 as DJ Alfred, and made quite a name for himself. But he made a conscious shift into the underground in 2013, finding more satisfaction and joy in producing music that didn’t fit into mainstream ideals. Over the years since he has established himself as a formidable producer, landing releases with labels such as Diynamic and Disco Halal. Now he’s joining the TAU squad for his debut EP Ups And Downs after testing the waters a while ago on the label’s Spektrum 2 VA...

The title track gets this EP off to a glorious start, demonstrating The Organism’s ability to craft tension-building dance floor bombs. Fueled by a guitar-esque riff, the track grows from rather sombre beginnings to a crescendo led by a catchy, yet indecipherable vocal sample. At this peak, he creates a scintillating breakdown, which takes us into the latter part of the track which continues the funky rhythmic dance up until the very end.

Next tracks is the aptly-titled ‘Conquistador’, which begins with a whirring low end guiding us into more low frequency oscillations and a macabre atmosphere. Slowly more unusual sounds and effects are added, though it remains minimal in its architecture until we hit the first breakdown. After which point, the energy increases with additional percussive elements creating a sense of urgency. Another breakdown heralds the final segment, with vocal clips utilised as instrumental layers and the hypnotic rhythm keeping you locked throughout.

Lastly, ‘Cowboy’ keeps things on the dark side. The Organism’s ability to craft stirring atmospheres is evident from the start, his deft touch gently builds this one into a vibrant workout. A huge breakdown really sets this track off, and we’re sent flying into the second part of the track full of excitement.

Patience is a virtue, and it’s one that will reward you greatly when listening to Ed Ed’s new stunner for Exploited. Building in a considered and engrossing manner, ‘Love Restraining’ will suck you in, spit you out and leave you a sweaty, elated mess.
A monotone bass groove twangs and rasps over a snappy beat, with a minimal approach to the accompaniments opted for at first. Pitched down vocals add a haunting layer, and deep in the mix a droning techno synth rises and falls. Dashes of scintillating melodic scales work their way into the mix, heavily reverbered into the background. Next, a pizzicato style blip riff passes through the track. Stabs pepper the track with more rhythmic intent, their tails extended here and there to draw them out further and deeper. All the while the shakers shuffle on and the beat and bass keep driving us forward.
A spooky breakdown sees several of these elements fuse and meander into each others paths before we slam headlong back into that bleeping, morse code style riff hammering away over the groove. 7 minutes passes by in a flash; you come to wondering where you are, where you have been, where you’re going, and where the repeat button is.
Berlin-based Ed Ed has also found favour through releases on Watergate Records and Get Physical among others, and last graced Exploited with the massive ‘Riding To Mercury’.
