Veteran house and techno producer Deetron makes a long awaited return to Hot Creations this April. Delivering the Glass EP, it marks his first release on the label since 2012’s remix of PBR Streetgang, continuing a standout 2022 for the Character label-head. 

Deetron spoke about the EP: “First and foremost, the tracks are effective DJ-Tools for the dancefloor so basically the inspiration was wanting to make people dance. Both tracks were made/finalised when all dancefloors were shut due to the pandemic so I reckon the desire to return to the clubs can be heard in the tunes as well.” 

Glass takes the form of a piano-fuelled, peak-time cut, as fast-paced hats reside next to resonant kicks throughout. It feels upbeat and danceable in one, with Chicago-like house tones bringing the Swiss talent’s musical experience to the fore. Come On Back is a similarly soulful offering, packed full of disco-esque vocals and echoing pads to create a feel-good, club-ready number. An instrumental version of both tracks is included in the EP, each of which offer a more stripped-back take on proceedings. 

Deetron has remained a stalwart of contemporary house and techno for more than two decades. The well-loved DJ and producer has released on several of the industry’s leading imprints, including Gerd Janson’s Running Back and Jeff Mills’ iconic Axis Records in recent times. Add to that collaborations with the likes of Jamiroquai, Honey Dijon and José Padilla, as well as a career that began in the late nineties, and you’ll quickly start to learn how Deetron has garnered a truly global standing in the scene.

Metafloor Records brings in Amsterdam based newcomer Drillisch to deliver the latest instalment on the imprint with the 'Late Night Step EP'. With only a few releases under his belt to date, the young artist demonstrates that he is one to watch for the future, showing off his meticulous production style with a fresh batch of original tracks. 

'When You're Around' is a certified club-ready track, perfect for the approaching summer seasons. It's layers of epic, ethereal pads, coupled with a euphoric vocal, combine to create a track that is bound to set dance floors alight in the coming months. 

'Get You Back' is another dance-ready banger with an evolving, blissful melodic hook. It's pulsating bass and intense builds throughout ensure that this one will do the damage in the clubs for sure. 

The young artist treats us to two mixes of the lead track 'Late Night Step,' with an array of crisp percussion, rich melodic phrases, interspersed with an iconic vocal sample in the original itself. Remixes from Kreature and Kenny Oliver round off the package with Drillisch's own 'Afterhour Heads Down Mix' slotting in perfectly for those darker sets.

Title cut ‘Enchant Me’ is a slick and classy effort fusing rich chords and skipping drums with zipping acid lines, while ‘Do You Even Groove’ pairs things back as rolling drums and sweeping electronics zig-zag through sparse textures. Next, ‘Endless Whispers’ combines sharp organ stabs with breezy pads and warm basslines, with the low-end heavy ‘Faded Senses’ closing the show and offering up yet more late-night dancefloor grooves.

Phonk D is back on Exploited’s hallowed Black Jukebox series following the success of his #29 takeover earlier this year. You just can’t keep a good man down...

‘Let’s Shake’ leads the way with serious funk intent, mixing a thumping MJ-esque bassline with some of that late ‘70s / early ‘80s synth magic. Phasing guitar licks sidle up against spunky horn swells and sassy vocal blasts. It’s a track that has ‘party-starter’ written all over it.

‘Reality Dance’ is a chuggier beast, building slowly through looping guitar-and-bass plucks until a feel-good melody emerges. This low-slung, low-tempo groove is in no hurry to lay out its funky machinations, making for a perfect early-evening floor-filler as cocktail glasses clink and glitterballs bling.

‘Players Anthem’ chunks things up with conga-inflected groove and an arpeggiated bassline throb underpinning swooning female vocal harmonies. It rocks a simple arrangement that lets the groove do the talking, with sustained string notes adding an element of tension at the requisite moments.

‘No Limits’ sees Phonk D team up with old sparring partner Sascha Ciminiera for another hot collab. The bouncing off-beat groove pumps pleasingly in classic disco fashion, with a joyous mood built through Rhodesy chords and a scintillating synth line. Swelling horns are buried deep in the mix in the second half to help propel the track higher.
