Two very classy tracks here from Montenegro’s Buba, fusing all manner of pretty and potent sounds into a heady mix.

‘Back To Life’ is a light-on-its-feet blend of Italo and melodic techno, where peppy percussion bounces alongside a rubbery bassline and ethereal, muted chords which slowly build a melancholic vibe. A fizzy square wave pulse hammers out a gently uplifting melody over the top, pushing towards the blissful breakdown where each element soars skywards. A gorgeous track to build the mood early in the night.

‘Arza’ could be categorised as Italo trance, with super tight beats and a sensual bass arpeggio fluttering away gently as sustained, filtered pads swell from the depths. The percussion builds, and a gorgeous chime melody softens into focus, also filtered in a dreamy, hazy, lo-fi manner. Big tom fills announce the arrangement switches, and gently phasing detuned chords provide the icing on the cake for this spine-tingling track. Subtle yet deeply emotional, these two gems suggest that Buba has a very bright future ahead.

Buba - Back To Life | Exploited Club

Collaborating previously on DGTL, having known each other for years, Dutch brother duo Parallelle and France’s Nicolas Masseyeff have created a partnership within the studio that clicks. Parallelle are multi-instrumentalists, composers, producers and Klassified Records owners with a hybrid sound that mixes up electronica, electro-jazz and underground house, while Masseyeff is equally accomplished and draws on minimalism, jazz, new wave, Detroit and Chicago when crafting his signature sound on the likes of Systematic Recordings and Diversions Music. Linking up again, the three talents combine for a first outing on Crosstown Rebels with ‘Renegade’.

Thomas of Parallelle says, “We have created a very complementary, fun and fluid creative flow when together in the studio. We like to keep a renegade mindset and always look for a dirty groove.” And that shows across these latest creations.

Up first is title track ‘Renegade’, a deep mid-tempo house shuffler. The drums are elegant and airy, with bright chords and a rasping baseline. It’s a real mood builder with dramatic synth sweeps that brings a sense of class to the dance floor.

Israeli artists Adam Ten & Mita Gami have been a creative force for the last couple of years, and their ‘High On’ EP on Crosstown Rebels last year gained huge success, defining a new movement of psychedelic house sounds. Their remix of ‘Renegade’ offers a slowly unfolding masterclass with moving melodies and modulated synths casting a captivating spell.

Last of all is ‘Bandidos’, another deep and subtle track infused with rich synth work. The bright lines and deft pads are lithe and loose over the underlapping drums, encouraging you to gaze in awe as you get lost in the mellifluous groove.

L.A-based producer Reza Safinia teams up with Ukrainian veteran The Organism on ‘Pandora's Sox', a quirky track which surprises at every turn.

Intertwined melodies first introduce the tune on a steady groove, that's brought to a hush by a husky acapella. That's where the full power of the tune is unleashed with a stripped-back drop sure to cause damage on the dancefloor.

Completing the release is a dub mix, where the trippy arpeggio is left aside in favour of a straight to the floor introductory groove. The prevalent drums of this alternate version highlights its distinctive textures and ad-libs.

Curated by label head Damian Lazarus, @crosstownrebels sub-label Rebellion returns with a fourth instalment of its ongoing SOULS series, with fresh tracks from a selection of exciting, up-and-coming talent. 

Rebellion’s excellent SOULS series has always transcended sounds and scenes to dig deep into the most forward-thinking new electronic niches. It has a deeply embedded spiritual theme, like most projects with which Lazarus is associated, and this volume again connects the dots between a number of innovative producers from across the globe. 

Belgrade and Mykonos-based duo MĪMĪ x FY open up with ‘Robotic Mode’, linking with Estray for a silky synth- laced house cut that goes deep into a cosmic future. The deft chords, spoken words and sci-fi signifiers enrich the groove perfectly. Brazil's Vini Pistori is next with ‘Hypnotized’, a scintillating fusion of pixelated melodies and bright, starry-eyed chords over a drawn-out and languid groove that is perfect for the late-night hours. Frequent collaborators MILI and Hoomance then step up with ‘Casa Mama’, a playful cut with a carnival feel thanks to the characterful horns which bounce about over the crisp drums. It's a track full of soul and sunshine that captures the joy of dancing outdoors. Israeli-born DJ and producer OMRI closes things with the rubbery bass and skewed synth futurism of his off-grid percussive masterclass, 'Funk Rhythm.’
