BETTY FORD BOYS - LEADERS OF THE BREW SCHOOL

The Betty Ford Boys are the first hip-hop producer super group out of Germany, consisting of Suff Daddy, Dexter and Brenk Sinatra. We call them the rat pack of our beat scene. With all diversity in sound, the three producers are unified in their love for dope beats and high-proof drinks, both catered and consumed with style and expertise.  
 
Suff Daddy, the globetrotting gin connoisseur and minimoog player with domiciles in Berlin, Düsseldorf and Sydney. He has released three solo albums and has worked with artists like Miles Bonny, Fleur Earth, Ta-ku and Elzhi. After a one year stint in Sydney, he returned to Berlin this spring. 
 
Brenk Sinatra, the Wien-Kaisermühlen homeboy, Westcoast rap fanatic and producer of the forthcoming MC Eiht album. Last year Brenk released the critically acclaimed S3 album together with US singer Miles Bonny and has laced beats for an armada of MCs from both sides of the Atlantic. 
 
And last but not least Dexter, the Stuttgart based trip maker and platinum producer with a day job as a pediatrician. This June Dexter released his second solo-album “The Trip” a homage to the psychedelic rock era and one of the most innovative and genre bending hip-hop albums of 2013. 
 
All three first met at the Hi-Hat Club, the producer series that we started a couple of years ago with the goal to push and celebrate the art of beat making. With their respective volumes “Suff Draft” (Suff Daddy), “The Jazz Files” (Dexter) and “Chop Shop” (Brenk Sinatra) each of the guys put the instrumental hip-hop thing on a new and different level. None of their beats need a MC to be complete; they are full songs in their own right.  
 
The official birth date of the Betty Ford Boys was the 2012 Beat BBQ in Cologne where Dexter, Suff and Brenk performed together for the first time. Right after the now legendary gig, that was ended by police forces Suff Daddy left for Sydney so that most the recordings for the Betty Ford Boys debut album took place in the cloud. Right after his return to Berlin, the Boys jumped on the bus and played their first club tour which finished with a gig at the Splash Festival.   
 
On August 30th, the Betty Ford Boys release their first album “Leaders Of The Brew School” on Melting Pot Music. The record combines the best of three worlds and has a surprisingly chilled Westcoast vibe. It's perfect summer music, it's edgy and relaxed at the same time and keeps you thirsty for more ...

Block rocking, pop locking Lonely C and Baby Prince are at it again with their latest "Fraiche EP" on Soul Clap Records. The troublemaking two-some take us back to 2011. It was a weekend in late August and New York City was practically under martial law. News tickers warned frightened citizens that a hurricane called Irene would strike at any minute, flooding most of Manhattan and Williamsburg where the boys sat gleefully snacking and talking shit inside the world famous Marcy Hotel. With all airplanes grounded and the trains halted it became clear that LC & BP were going nowhere. It began to rain, the wind picked up and as the skies darkened, NYC declared a state of emergency. Well…looks like it was time to hit the STUDIO!  

What followed could be considered a weekend of non stop music and delinquent antics. These two masters of hang out managed not to leave the house as they pumped out track after track anticipating the end of days. Only disaster never struck, IRENE WAS A HOAX! Was it another conspiracy? Who was pulling the strings? Who was John Frum? Is the Earth hollow? The mysteries remain… UNSOLVED.

On June 30th, 2014, German music duo Rey & Kjavik will bring their new EP into stores: "Prototype". Until recently the public didn't even know the band members behind their alias. Their name draws attention to the capital of Iceland, Reykjavik, and that happens for a reason. Both music producers want their music to speak for itself instead of faces or tattoos. They gave us an interview to talk about why they want their identity to be kept secret, about their new release (stream premiere by trndmusik) and Rey & Kjavik Records.

trndmusik: Why do you want your identity to be kept secret?

Rey & Kjavik: It's all about our music. We believe that music can stand for itself and always finds its audience. Neither one guy, nor the background story, nor tattoos, nor leather jackets should distract the listener from what's really important. We produce music, you either feel it or leave it. That's the way it should be.

It was a massive honour to be asked to curate 2 day night parties at Beacons Festival 2014.  We took over the Belgrave Music tent and provided 24 hours of music. It has been a massive year for Yorkshire this year with the Tour De France Grand Depart earlier in the summer and Beacons Festival continued the buzz, proving that you can have a world class line up and amazing production in the heart of the beautiful North York moors.  I was lucky enough to play the last set on Saturday to a packed tent.  A big thanks to everyone who was there and I hope you enjoy the mix even if you weren't.

It reads: "Just as the Scotch fear the Loch Ness monster, the coastal folk of the Caspian have long lived in the shadow of this great colossus. A mythical aircraft of gargantuan proportions, the Ekranoplan now lies at rest amid the discarded rubble of the Soviet dream. This EP paints a more gentle, playful picture of the monster and it's mysterious aeronauts.”

In the three years since Simon Baker released his debut album for 2020 Vision, he’s steadily built upon the acclaim the deftly produced work garnered him. Bolstering his already active career with a move to London, which enabled a hook up with Jamie Jones, his new locale also led to a fortuitous relationship with Geddes and his riotous Nofitstate outfit, for whose label Baker provided the first release at the end of last year. Becoming a firm part of leading the label's general operations, Baker is also responsible for signing up the work of Berlin's Matthew Styles, rising talents Mr. Tophat & Art Alfie and even A1 Bassline, who showcased some of his house persuasions on his Outsider EP. 

With the collective set to head Room Three at the end of November with Geddes and the aforementioned Mr. Tophat & Art Alfie joining the former Leeds resident, we jumped at the offer to present Baker’s latest mix, a recording which shows us what music he’s currently feeling the most.

At the end of october a white label pressing of “Make It Good” caused a stir in club land. The track impressed Gilles Peterson so much that he licenced it right away for his next Brownswood Bubble compilation. Now, finally we have the official release on Sonar Kollektiv hitting the stores. Next to the original version the 12inch is equipped with a remix by veteran Phon.o.

The Bristish duo The White Lamp called attention to themselves for the first time with a release on Futureboogie in April. Now they already produce a masterpiece with “Make It Good”. A track that works probably in every club of this world. The hypnotic bassline lures the laziest butt on the dancefloor and when the vocals set it, then, well then there’s no holding back anymore.

The already very impressive remix portfolio of the old hand Berliner Phon.o is now enriched with a further gem. The additional synth chords and the radical vocals re-arrangement turn the track into a confidently stylish hybrid of Chicago House and Techno.

With the digital release you get the Galactic Disco Mix and the incredible remix by Hannes Fischer. This youngster purely kills the game at the moment. He strips the track down to the bone, dresses it with a new bassline and a sassy shuffle beat and let it breath. This way the vocals shine even brighter and become anthem-like. Is this the longawaited redefinition of deep house?
