After dropping several tracks and performing at select festivals throughout the years, Ólafur Arnalds and Janus Rasmussen dedicated the year 2014 to explore the area in-between Ólafur’s more acoustic, piano-based solo work and Janus’s synth-heavy electro pop, with their collaborative electronic project Kiasmos.

By focusing solely on their self-titled debut album, Ólafur and Janus have been able to combine and further develop their unique sound aesthetics to complete an album driven by their mutual love for electronic music. Made in Ólafur’s newly build studio in Reykjavík, Iceland, a majority of the album was recorded using acoustic instruments next to a variety of synthesisers, drum machines and tape delays. It features a live drummer, string quartet and Ólafur performing on the grand piano, producing an ambient, textured sound, which makes it a perfect home listen and equally danceable record. If you listen closely, you can spot them record the thumb piano, finger snapping and even the sound of the metal grinder of a lighter slowly to replace the usual electronic hi-hat sounds, giving the album a far more intimate and unique atmosphere.

“We decided to start almost completely over with this record, so most of the material is written this year with the idea of making a record that can stand as one piece rather than a collection of songs. I am very excited to get a proper record out exploring a different territory than I am used to. I touch a lot on electronic genres in my own music but never have the opportunity to go full out electronic like we do here.” – Ólafur Arnalds

So when we early this year finally found the time to sit down and make a full length album there was so much we wanted to try out. Berlin act GHEIST have made a huge impression since releasing their debut record on Exploited in 2016. Now with regular appearances at Watergate and various summer festival gigs under their belts, three releases on Exploited and a couple with Sasha’s Last Night On Earth as well as a collaboration with HOSH ('The Watergate Affairs'), they are poised as one of the most promising acts of the current wave. This mesmerising new three-track EP only serves to strengthen their claim. 

'Axelot' begins by way of thuddy kicks knocking against the slightest of bleeps and gently techy percussion, with a slow-rising, muffled synth arpeggio teasing its way into life as the claps join in. Over the course of nine hypnotic minutes, we ebb and flow with the tracks subtle intricacies, a dramatic mood gently building. A mind-bending arp blurs the focus in the breakdown before we charge headlong back into the throbbing depths of the track.

'Kolibri' builds in similarly unhurried fashion, with bolder melodic focus that yields graceful strings, emotive chord patterns and some sublime delayed plucked refrains that take the essence of trancey emotion and boil it down to a sophisticated reduction. Just as the swells threaten to take the track into a frenzied crescendo, things are pulled back to keep the tension intact. Classy stuff. 

'Time' completes this sublime package by way of swirling chimes, throbbing monotone bass and analog bleeps, building up a heady wall of sound before a trademark GHEIST vocal lifts the track into unchartered territory. The sombre tone recalls Depeche Mode, and the idea to use the vocal in the breakdown alone only gives it more impact. It’s also a reminder that this trio bring an element of live electronica and instrumentation to their studio sessions.

Summer is coming and Sincopat head-honcho AFFKT presents his bets for this season. Jan Mante EP has four slices of sexy and colourful sounds including huge Niko Schwind and Echonomist remixes. Past and present of the label meet together to write a next step in the future.
 
Jan Mayen is built over sparkling synth melodies that evoke the most exciting sunsets. A bunch of well-driven elements are dropped in the right way getting an epic timeless song. On remix duties we have Niko Schwind sound alchemist who offers a great rough and cinematic track, definitely Niko found an amazing and different way to tell his own story. Open-minded electronic music continues in Mante, a perfect balance for the A-side, built over a devious bass but with a delicate and organic melody as a protagonist. For the closing, the Greek super talent Echonomist delivers an extraordinary deep anthem rework, playing and taking the original elements to another perfect and full-of-light scenario.

Florian Kruse about the collaboration with Fake Mood:
'I have supported some tracks of the guys and played them a lot in my sets. We started communicating on Facebook and came up with the idea of doing a track together. It went down so well that we decided to do another one.’'

Fake Mood is a music production duo from St. Petersburg, Russia. Their style includes ethnic elements, charming electronica and surreal sound textures - always with the focus on the dancefloor. Their music has already been supported by some of the biggest names in the industry. 

With long time passion for house that dates back to the early years, Florian Kruse is first and foremost a DJ, taking his signature sound to world renowned clubs.
Florian Kruse has already released with his production duo Kruse & Nuernberg on Exploited in the past. In the last years he has focussed on his solo project. 
Kruse plunged into a solo career with a release on Anjunadeep, working together with his older brother Vincenzo and one of his long time idols Lisa Shaw. Followed by releases on Noir Music, Poker Flat Recordings, Joris Voorn’s GREEN imprint and remixes by Noir, Eagles & Butterflies, Joris Voorn, David Morales and the list of releases and remixes goes on. After a couple of feature tracks with singer / songwriter Hendrik Burkhard Florian and Hendrik started a new LIVE project presenting ‘TheGround’ with a full album.
