[SPA366] DJ ROCCA - Buddy Money

Back in 2018, Argentinian producer Fernando Pulichino released ‘Search of Indigo’ on Leng, a shuffling slab of colourful, Balearic-adjacent dub disco featuring his own distinctive lead vocals and backing vocals from Luca Gasparini. Six years on, the track returns renewed and refreshed thanks to a string of new floor-friendly reworks by LTJ Experience and Pulichino himself.

Fernando kicks off the EP with his ‘AM Mix’, an inspired re-invention that re-frames the song as a hard-wired, acid-fired chugger – all restless, razor-sharp TB-303 lines, low-slung bass guitar and sparkling piano riffs. On the digital version of the EP Pulichino has also offered up his ‘PM Mix’, a deliciously Balearic disco dub rich in colourful synth sounds, elastic bass, flanged guitars and sun-bright piano licks.

It's LTJ Experience’s trio of remixes that lie at the heart of the EP though. The Italian producer, real name Luca Trevisi, initially made his name as a downtempo and nu-jazz producer before perfecting a trademark style of chugging, slow-motion hedonism that draws influence from both deep house and nu-disco. His main Remix foregrounds many of these trademark elements, in the process delivering a bongo-rich chugger laden with delay-heavy bass guitar sounds, head-nodding drums, heady guitar loops and echoing vocal snippets.

On the Dirty Mix, Trevisi reaches for tight, short TB-303 ‘acid’ loops, a more sparse and heavy rhythm track offering a more heads-down, dubbed-out affair that should delight those who love late night and early morning hypnotism with flashes of wide-eyed sonic bliss. Then, to round things off, Trevisi delivers a heady, atmospheric and spaced-out Dub full of jazz guitar licks, bubbling electronics, vocal snippets and effects-laden bass. It’s a winning combination.

Homework - unlike their lower case counterpart that serves as the agony of school kids everywhere - are responsible for shaking up house music in a big way in 2010. Calling their “Fissa Tune” EP on Exploited Records a “breakout record” might be an exaggeration because it’s hardly the duo’s debut. However, the title track showed a comfort and skill for transforming a Romanian traditional oboe song into a full body shakedown jacking house track adorned with guttural yelps, and “I Got One (You’re It)” loops a warm soul diva vocal into the kind of siren song that could seduce any kind of dance floor. It was one of those EPs where you couldn’t even choose a favorite because they’re all so good. Following it up with an equally heralded EP on Made to Play and a big, wild, often unexpected remix package on Exploited, Homework (comprised of Zip &amp; Tom) succeed in something many other people haven’t lately; making dance music that’s equally satisfying for your feet and brain. With a full schedule of international gigs (including Berlin's Panoramabar) and top remixes in the pipeline (Round Table Knights a.o.), Homework provide a unique and diverse sound and guarantee serious business behind the decks. As a teaser for their next EP on Exploited, to be released in February 2011, we present you with "Lenny", which takes Lenny Kravitz’ seminal track “I Belong To You” and turns it into something infectiously catchy. Whether its "true revision" or “the ’stick a kick drum on it!’ philosophy”, Homework have taken a commercial hit and turned it into something so lush that maybe even Larry Levan might have played it out. They took those 90's sentiments and rearranged them to be retrofitted in this era; pure revisionist nostalgia. Although in the end, it’s all about the way it makes you move.

After its annual summer break Correspodant around label-head Jennifer Cardini is back and starts the new season with a four tracker from Alan Dixon. His Edge of Forever EP comes with three originals and a Diskomiks from the maestro of the genre Prins Thomas ft. Bugge Wesseltoft for the title track. The rework from Thomas M. Hermansen, Prins Thomas' real name, and pianist Bugge Wesseltoft is a groovey homage to summer season, to a better time, to hope and freedom, to music and the joy and the lust of life it evokes in people. Dramatically perfectly arranged the Diskomiks comes with a crunchy housey beat which is shortly enriched with a funky bass line melody that, in the course of the track, sets the base for the piano. The latter holds several tonal arrays switching between lower and higher ranges that are stretched over 10 minutes and 20 seconds. But those are a dramatically and musically a symphony over several octaves, split in multiple chapters and held together by the combined genius of these two artists. 

Alan Dixon's EP Edge of Forever will be released on Correspondant on September 25th, 2020.
