James Curd is set to release his debut album ‘Taking All This Time’ on Exploited, rounding up some of his biggest productions to date alongside a clutch of new productions. Featuring a slew of vocalists and collaborators and his distinctive combination of live instrumentation and electronic grooves, it’s a beautiful collection, and ‘Say Less Not More’ is one of the feisty new tracks plucked from it.
‘Say Less Not More’ sees Curd team up with Chicago DJ, producer and vocalist Bear Who? in fine style, with the vocal message perfectly matching the uncluttered arrangement. A pumping analog bassline jacks the track up as Bear Who?’s commanding spoken word vocal sets the tone. Muted chords accentuate the bassline further before the arrangement strips back to bare bones. A gurgling acid line builds the drama as the percussion gently technofies, the 303 rubbing up against the phat bassline in perfect undulating harmony. With plenty of chunky low end energy, a snappy groove and Bear Who? lacing the track with his laconic yet engrossing tones, it’s a beast of a track.

Stefano Ritteri (Spaciale) gives the track a disco injection with tight, head-snapping beats, oodles of bassline funk and shimmering synth magic, while Theus Mago (Futureboogie) zeroes in on the acid content, gurgling 303s oscillating over stuttering bass throbs and swaggering half-time breakbeat to chilling effect.

Bordering the lines between slinky nu disco and pumping house, O.N.O’s DON’T YOU KNOW features sublime, breathy vocals from fellow Parisian newcomer, Praa. Enduro Disco provides a gently euphoric, deep roller on FOREVER. Swaying synth arpeggios and unhurried beat recalling some of Soulwax’s more pared back material can be heard in Stefano Ritteri’s & Mytron’s DONNA. Theus Mago zeroes in on the acid content, gurgling 303s oscillating over stuttering bass throbs and swaggering half-time breakbeat to chilling effect on his SAY LESS, NOT MORE Remix for James Curd. Holger Zilske retains the deep vibe of DEEP IN MY HEART by Enduro Disco but laces it with a dubby feel and more of a taut inflexion in its percussive groove. LET’S SHAKE by Phonk D closes the compilation with serious funk intent, mixing a thumping MJ-esque bassline with some of that late ‘70s / early ‘80s synth magic. All in all this is a great eclectic dance compilation.

Joyce Muniz is back with the perfect follow-up to the taut electro of her ‘Glass Mistress’ release on PETS, this time back on her regular home of Exploited.
Following on from last year’s ‘Microdosing’ on the same label, she has once again excelled in creating a dynamic, charismatic slice of dance gold with just a sprinkling of pop sensibility.
‘Crystalline’ has a slightly more intense feel than its predecessor, with a snarling bass arpeggio swelling in teasing fashion over the crisp drums. A minimalist, clipped synth arpeggio provides a complimentary layer, with a woozy male vocal providing the rest of the required texture. A sassy, rapped, hip-house refrain is contrasted with airy looped harmonies which haunt the track in sensual fashion. Tense pads provide more drama and complete the retro-future feel.
Alt-disco legends In Flagranti provide a subtle rework, keeping the melodies intact but remoulding them with somewhat gentler textures and a more chugging tempo. More sensual and more laconically hypnotic with its tumbling conga rhyhtms and warm analog synths, it’s a very necessary addition to the package.

The masterful Budakid is back on Exploited with two beautiful tracks.
A spellbinding, slow-burning slice of melodic-tinged house music, ‘Ringo Bingo’ has shades of Todd Terje in its spacious arrangement, rolling groove and gorgeous riffage. An electro arpeggio percolates over the throbbing bass tones; heavily reverbed percussive hits create atmosphere; and nagging piano chords build a tense melodic backbone. The cute lead melody is at once euphoric and melancholy, and a stunning synth solo in the mid-section adds some dazzling freestyle energy that really opens the track.

‘’Ringo Bingo’ is for me a travel between fusion, club and a glimpse of electronic jazz” says the man behind the track. “I n the break I asked an old friend of mine — Rolf van de Sande, with whom I used to play in a band — to come up with a jazzy and extraordinary solo. He totally nailed it. I wrote the arrangement in the end around the solo, and let the groove take over the focus at the climax to get more of a dance feel to it. This is one of the tracks that was a pain in the ass to finish and mix because it was full of harmonies and melodies. But I thought "If Snarky Puppy can do it, I can try to do it..."

‘Aku Aku’ goes deeper still, with lush strings decking out a light arrangement where shuffling percussion and dreamy, crystalline chime melodies flit across the surface. The chimes are seamlessly bolstered by live bass guitar, doubling the melody up a treat, with splashes of percussive texture here and there bringing a little extra spice. A few piano chords later on are all that are needed to complete this sublime track.

"Aku Aku" is more of a dubby groove based track where I tried to use only a few elements. A hallucinogenic melody that's very repetitive, but easy on the ear due to its polyrhythm and harmony. Once a friend listened to it and said "Kevin, this sounds like an old 00's game". I totally agreed, so one of my favourite game characters was an inspiration for the name.”

That’s how T.U.R.F. describe the origin of their latest EP for Exploited, the funk-fuelled, finger-lickin’ ‘Whatcha Gonna Do’. And going back to the source for inspiration has proved a masterstroke, with the duo cooking up two super-groovy tracks that will be in heavy rotation for months to come.
‘Whatcha Gonna Do’ works its way around an Afrobeat flavoured guitar and bass groove, with chattering tribal percussion tumbling over a classic house beat. Vocal chants add another layer of swing, with a filtered breakdown taking us right back to that French touch era and an irresistible Santana-esque, guitar solo weaving in and out of the foreground thereafter. The groove is thick and relentless and will keep you bopping throughout. Close your eyes and you could be on the dancefloor at Djoon in Paris in the early 2000s...
The flip ‘Real Heads Know The Deal’ is a more urgent, insistent affair. Drawing on the same DNA as the title track, the pace is upped and the swing pushed further into shoulder-wiggling slinkiness. At its core: another infectious guitar loop. Sprinkled on top: a funked-up vocal cut-up. The bass is warm and curvy, and blasts of feel-good horns are woven in at just the right moments. Hypnotic disco house at its very finest.

Quirky French duo O.N.O have been hard at work this year, making the most of the forced confinement by cooking up some of their most sophisticated work yet.
‘Don’t You Know Feat. Praa’ is a powerful, triumphant track that will lift the spirits. Bordering the lines between slinky nu disco and pumping house, it features sublime, breathy vocals from fellow Parisian newcomer, Praa. Her warm tones glide over a beautiful melange of off-beat disco bass, funked-up synth touches and moody atmospheric touches, all set to a snappy, tight beat. A heady breakdown and massive snare roll build-up kick the track into overdrive, and the mixture of ‘80s mood and driving modern day energy is a truly sumptuous mix.
‘In Spekzion’ rocks an Italo disco vibe in some style, convincingly recreating the muscular vibe of the era. A stuttering, whooping chopped-up vocal loop draws us in, a slowly phasing synth ‘n’ bass arpeggio cutting in sharply as the light beat and gated ‘80s snares explode into life. A swirling, muted synth snarls; another taps out an optimistic melody. Huge snare hits launch us out of the short breakdown, propelling us back towards that deliciously camp and retro vocal hook that recalls the days of primitive samplers with short sample times. The duo say that “the track was inspired by a host of anxiety-inducing information delivered in recent months, a total letting go of reality, a seizure of power over what surrounds us, a positive rebellion, a burst of oxygen.”
Together, these two tracks form a very necessary palette cleanser that will bring you energy and positivity right when you need them most.

The title track from prolific producer James Curd’s debut album ‘Taking All This Time’ is a marker of the quality of the 14-track collection, and one of the new tracks set amongst some of his finest moments to date.
A looping jazz-funk b-line and key sample cut pumps round and round as splashy hi-hats and tense synth whirrs build the mood, before the sweet male vocal refrain is unleashed over a pleasingly mellow melodic progression. The vocal by Shyam P reveals itself more, laying on a honeyed R&B / soul feel to the proceedings before we’re dropped back into that relentless disco groove. Snatches of biting electric pianos intersperse the rhythm, and drawn out sax samples provides a moment of juxtaposition in the break. The overall feel is that of a melancholy summer jam that bridges the gap between multiple genres, concisely reflecting Curd’s tastes in the process.
Alan Dixon (Running Back) ditches the soulful feel for an acid/electro/Italo fusion on his bold remix, setting bubbling acid lines against early '90s piano chords that joyously take centre stage midway through the track.
