After some sort of slumber, Shabu Recordings is proud to present its new series: SHARMX. SHARMX is pretty self-explanatory: these EPs will be a retrospective that breathes new life into tracks from previous releases. These born-again tracks are then presented under a new form that is dictated by another party, not previously involved in any creative process of the affiliated release. The word Shabu being Japanese for Splash, this leads us to our first installment in the series: Splash Splash Vol.1.

Splash Splash Vol.1 consists of 4 tracks and 1 digital bonus track. Avus - Staring Into One Eye gets reworked by the Italian musical magicians duo, Margot. Margot shine a new light on the original by reshaping it in some sort of intergenerational party, with Rhodes jamming on top of a housey take of the original, resulting in a jazzy, yet head-bob-inducing vibe. Niccolò Bianchi – Estasi then gets a cosmic treatment by Shabu’s regular Falling From Cloud 9, adding dreamy aspects to an already dreamy song. Niccolò’s original had some Kosmiche Musik influences, and this remix makes it assume it completely by unleashing its beauty under a Krautrock form. Side B then opens with a remix by Samoyed of Vaghe Stelle – The Platform. Taking the lush synths of the original and transposing it on dubby beats results in a perfect arrangement. This remix also appears on the latest installment of the series Tapes on K7 Records curated by Bloc Party. Finally, the release folds on itself with Shabu Recordings head honcho Axel Helios’ second take of Avus – Staring Into One Eye. Having collaborated with Montreal glitch-hop extraordinaire Famelik on the official release, Axel reveals a 160 BPM IDM version of SHA003’s title track.

The cult of Multi Culti expands it’s horizons to include Nicola Cruz, backed by remixes from Xanga and L_cio.
Nicola Cruz’s music beautifully invokes the landscapes and rituals of his homeland, Ecuador, a country that contains both the majestic Andes mountains and the mighty Amazon jungle.  His sound is an amalgamation of folkloric traditions and ancestral mythologies, crafted with fine detail and slick production techniques. 
In 2012 Nicola collaborated with Nicolas Jaar on Clown & Sunset, and has since worked towards his debut album on ZZK Records.
Between past and present, traditional and modern, Nicola fits into a growing scene of South American artists exploring local indigenous and Afro-cosmologies, among fellow artists and ZZK label-mates like Chancha Via Circuito. 
For his debut on Multi Culti, Nicola has created Mantis, and it is arguably his most accomplished club record to date, a 105bpm tribal chugger that flexes shamanic authority over hearts and minds. Invocacion goes even deeper into the new, new age, presenting traditional instrumentation and mysticism in a modern framework. Australia’s Xanga joins in with a super lively, rhythmic remix that is as joyful as it is deep. Finally, Brazil’s L_cio presents a version that strips things down for club play, upping the tempo while keeping the characteristic flavour of the flute.

Having marked a dramatic departure into fresh musical territory - a serendipitous voyage through synth pop, disco noir, cosmic Krautrock and New Wave - Kasper Bjørke's 4th studio album 'After Forever' now returns in a sparkling new guise, each track tweaked, fine-tuned and reinterpreted in all manner of invigorating ways. Justly recognised for the care he takes in seeking out original collaborators, Bjørke dishes up an anthology that is qualitatively different from a standard remix package, jam-packed with imagination, verve and unexpected twists. 

Pink Skull set the tone, taking 'Rush' into spooky, spaced-out zones, the vocals floating hauntingly above analogue squelches and acid-tinged bumps. Hot on their heels, DFA-affiliated duo  A/JUS/TED extract a dark, moody bass line from 'Sylvia', shrouding Cæcilie Trier's Sade-esque vocal in echo and drone. 
Colder heralds his welcome return from a ten-year hiatus by casting 'Marbled Blood' in a Lynchian haze - disconcertingly yet deliciously strange - while Superpitcher takes 'TNR' in a downtempo direction, replete with surging synth pulses and a haunting picked guitar motif. 

From there on in, there's no dropping off in standards. Bryan Kessler transforms 'Grit' into a clockwork machine of strobing guitars and brutal bass stabs. Deo & Z-Man magic up a lush, arpeggiated Balearic classic from 'Lies' and Matt Karmil transforms the cold wave of 'Into Smithereens' into a no holds barred exercise in pulsing repetition. 

Bringing it home, Michael Mayer amps up 'Apart' for the deepest big room dancefloors, Disco Halal label boss Moscoman hones in on the dreamy, melodic heart of 'Forever' and Phillip Lauer brings his brother Jacob into the fold for the 'Hotel Lauer' version of 'Titan'. With its featherweight congas and spirit of playful fun, it's a five-star experience and a more than fitting place to kick back and relax after a bewitching tour of planet Bjørke.

Here's Alex's and my oral history of this track..

Alex:  "The idea for ‘Eve’ came about from a short session in my studio where I sketched out some very rough 16 bar loops and sent them over to Max to play with, deliberately stopping myself from developing them too far at this stage in order to leave space the collaborative process to evolve."

Max:  "I almost un-wrote a track for this one. Alex started off with the main bulk of the ideas for the track, and I initially chopped it all back to a couple of key elements.   I then experimented with some FFT effects and building some chaotic randomising manipulations of the basic elements, and sliding drum rhythms so that one drum element would slip relative to another and then back in - all an attempt to generate some movement and variation from the simple building blocks."

Alex:   "It was interesting to hear the rough ideas I had created, developed in a totally different way to how they would have had I been writing the track by myself. Inspired by the new direction the track was going in - "

Max:  "I'd made a mess.  Alex helped tidy it all up and bring it enough back into line to work as a dancefloor track"

Alex:  "- I layered some more percussion hits and string textures.  We continued the process of sending stems back and forth, refining each others ideas as well and creating new ones until the track was ready."

Max:  "The quotient series has been a nice opportunity to experiment with new music outside of the restrictions of record labels and their need to sell product.  This freedom has left me open to put out a piano solo and feedback matrix, a 10 minute ambient to drum and bass glitch remix, a track scored to a video, a one off club collab and more - all projects that I wanted to try, and am glad I did, but that wouldn't easily fit into the usual EP/LP formats. 

It's been a sort of sketch and experiment project, much of it tied to the Emergence visual shows, where I've been experimenting with how I can perform music and visual in sync in a live format. "

Kruse & Nuernberg have been a constant presence in the spotlight of the house scene for a while now. Growing their own style, always deep but intense and bouncy, flirting sometimes with soul, sometimes with techno and always with an overall feel of good vibes and energy translated directly into moving feet and rump shaking in dancefloors all around the globe.
They have released music on various labels such as Liebe*Detail, Rejected and Lazy Days (where they released an album in 2012). Not only have they produced remixes for Matthew Dear, Groove Armada and Dennis Ferrer, they’ve also had some of their tracks reworked by Wolf&Lamb, Spirit Catcher, Fred Everything, Tom Middleton and Vincenco.
’Yokohama Nights’ is the follow-up to their ’Lost N Free EP’ with Brolin which they released on Off. Their collaboration with Brolin marks a different step of K&N’s career taking their music to new, unknown more song-orientated territory. Brolin has been a favourite on Pitchfork, Dazed, The Guardian, Dummy, Pidgeon and Planes and Noisey. The UK producer and Phantom of the Opera fanatic (we can only assume by his choice of maskwear) sings in an eery, seductive mode over sinewy synths and a chattering, dry beat. Perhaps to add a little more definition to Brolin’s work, he’s named each of his available songs so far after different cities (’NYC’, ’Lisboa’ and ’Reykjavic’). On his collaboration track with Kruse & Nuernberg he sings about Yokohama Nights in Tokyo, Japan.
