Taking his cues from ‘80s new wave and synthpop, Mexican newcomer Levantine has a super-punchy electro sound that has been winning him fans like the legendary DJ Hell. He serves up three hot tracks for Exploited which clearly define what he’s all about.

‘Disco Relaxation’ is a bruiser from the off, with a rugged ascending bassline scale filtering into play on top of a propulsive beat. The push and pull between the percussion and the synth give the track a delightful wiggle, and the drama is built masterfully slowly through an array of bold melodic lines and vintage sounds to a powerful climax.

‘Nuevos Horizontes’ is a bit more of a melodic affair, hazy detuned chord washes punctuate that shoulder-popping bass arpeggio and ride cymbals adding a sense of urgency as the track builds. A tense breakdown ensues, after which the bass groove morphs through a series of different tonalities and pads and FX soar in the background along with a sprightly arp that provides the icing on the cake.

‘The New Wave’ rounds off the package with dramatic drum fills and hits meeting a mutli-layered bass groove that’s drenched in clever atmospheric touches. A haunting melody arrives halfway through to give the track a euphoric edge, but none of the toughness is foregone as a result — making this a track of bold contrasts.

Also making electro, psychedelic and stoner rock with his other project Red Eyes & Tears, Levantine is very much one to watch.

Blazing newcomer Henri Bergmann makes her full EP debut on Watergate Records with the captivating ‘Mind Control’ EP.
 
Building a buzz via impressive releases on her label Automatik, the Londoner has picked up support from everyone from Dixon, Solomun and Maceo Plex. Indeed, mention the Dodi Palese Remix remix of her track ‘Protection’ to any clued-up melodic house fan and you’re likely to be met with a blissed-out response, so beloved was the cut, which also ended up in Tale of Clubs’ top 10 for 2021.
 
Her maiden voyage on the Oberbaumbrücke home label is a tour de force of chugging house that encompasses new wave, electro and progressive elements, with a strong cast of collaborators and remixes along the way.
 
Pushing herself creatively during the lockdown, this EP is the first time we’ve heard Henri utilise her voice on her own productions, and the resulting work is a treat. The title track is a team-up with Biesmans who brings his distinct retro sound signature to the track, while Henri’s vox elevates it to another level. ‘Our Time Has Come’ is a punchy dancefloor gem propelled by her own vocals and a classy psychedelic synth line. ‘We Just Keep On Going’ brings bags of robotic soul to the table, as Henri’s husband Wennink takes to the vocoder, alongside a mystical lead melody. Stephan Jolk returns to the label following his excellent ‘Freedom’ EP in April, re-working ‘Mind Control’ into a muscular weapon. Meanwhile Echonomist, who is notable for his appearance on WhoMadeWho’s Watergate 26 compilation, also takes his hand to the title track, re-fashioning it into a tough bass-driven electro cut that’s beautiful and brain-scrambling in equal doses.

Dominik Marz and brothers Radial Gaze team up for this four-track outing on TAU. Both acts have been steadily building their reputations on the underground, maintaining a high level of consistency and captivating dance floors across the planet. The trio have already worked together, dropping ‘Trans’ on Mexican label Duro in 2021. Now they’re back with a full EP, demonstrating the full force of their alliance.

The EP starts with ‘Baren’, where we find a low end percolating alongside crispy beats, with an array of percussive additions to increase the momentum. The bass pumps and vocal clips dip in and out of the background as the trio add more layers. It’s a heady combination of well pro- grammed beats with synth and bassline arrangement.

Then we have ‘Asper’, a dense punchy cut with a simple, hypnotic melody. This cut really benefits from its simplicity, an unfussy foundation which supports a colourful main riff.

Next is ‘Mistral’, a percussion-heavy composition that features an earworm melody, trundling drums, and a warped vocal. This one is a proper dance floor stomper.

Lastly, ‘E-Functions’ is a driving cut with a mysterious aura. The trio keep this one engaging throughout with plenty of progression around the core motifs. It’s ominous yet bouncy and playful, striking the balance perfectly and closing out the EP in style.
