Portland was produced by our good friend Dave Clark aka Sparky and was the first record we released in 2002, about a year before the first ever Numbers party took place.

Originally recorded live to tape using an MMT8, a Microwave II, and an ESi32 in the summer of 1998, it was released on an old label of ours named Stuffrecords and formed part of a somewhat rambling compilation called STUFF001. We hastily stuck this record out without any proper distribution, because at the time we didn’t know any better. Despite this, the record did pretty well, selling 500 copies to a few select stores who had faith in what we were doing.

Fast forward a year or so to when Numbers kicked off and the track became one of the first bonafide anthems in the club. It was our tune and it would tear the roof off at any of our parties.

A couple of years later, we booked DJ Pete, aka 'Substance' to play. We’re talking about the record in the pub when he suddenly informs us that Ricardo Villalobos is crazy about it and even charted it. This was a deep, almost Drexciyan electro track and here was the king of crazy experimental minimal house music caning it in his DJ sets.

Not long after that night, the Numbers label was up and running and the idea to re-release Portland with a remix from Mr Villalobos was brought up almost as a kind of pipe-dream. Now in 2013, with a little help from Gerd Janson, it has finally happened. Recorded live in one take and clocking in at over 30 minutes long, it’s cited as an "experiment" by Ricardo. Designed to play at two speeds, at 33rpm it's almost like an early 90s Black Dog track stretched out to infinity, whilst at 45rpm, it’s a club-ready groover with an almost Dopplereffekt rhythm to it – the sort you could imagine sneaking into a DJ Assault or Godfather Ghettotech mix. Somehow, it also manages to be classic Villalobos.

To finish off the record Dave gave us two unheard tracks from those original Portland sessions in 1998. The malevolent electro of ‘Jigsaw’ would instantly have become another Numbers anthem if only Dave had let us hear it ten years ago, and closer track ‘Wilson St’ heads down an ambient route.

About Sparky
Dave’s a bit of a legend. In the early 90s he was a member of Glasgow Techno band State Of Flux who released on JD Twitch’s old label T&B Vinyl. Their first live show was supporting The Black Dog in 1992 at an old Glasgow venue called Industria, and they were also the support at the first ever Jeff Mills show in Glasgow. Later on Dave would release records under the name Truffle Club and regularly collaborated with JD Twitch on remixes under the Optimo (Espacio) banner. Dave and his brother Craig also released an ep under the name ‘Music At Nite’ for former Numbers label Wireblock. Most recently, he’s been working under the name LUMA for Optimo Trax.

Hayden James - Something About You

In the wake of Youandewan’s Spiral Arms EP, Will Saul’s AUS turn their attention from the established to the auspicious and present a brand new artist from the camp: Escape. Based in Glasgow. Escape is a fledgling talent whose cultivation amongst the ranks sees him now ready to drop the first of several EPs on AUS.

His debut EP ‘Just Escape’ is a poignant brew of delicately treated vocals, swooning strings and gut-wrenching melodicism. Backed up by remixes from the mighty Justin Martin and Jacques Greene this is a package that astutely straddles the bridge between pop and underground dance music - a skill which AUS have honed throughout their lauded and extensive anthology.

The title track drifts atop a glacial bed as softly shifting strings are punctuated by Escape’s haunting croon before ‘Without You’ blooms behind sportive synth work and jutting vocals that are underpinned by a vibrant 4/4 groove.

Dirtybird regular Justin Martin mines deep into ‘Just Escape’ and offers up a Remix and a Dub. Subtly permeated with some nifty sampling, his revision spotlights a vocal reprise that’s impelled by a low-end that punches in signature fashion.

LuckyMe mainstay Jacques Greene weighs in with a prodigious take on the title track that churns and swells throughout it’s extended duration rounding up an enlivening insight into an artist that’s primed to make some serious headway throughout 2015.


Just Escape

Halle’s dynamic duo, Monkey Safari return to their beloved Hommage imprint after being away from the label for more then a year. With their beautifully crafted “Cranes” release they will surely make up for their long absence in a big way. Even looking at the names of the remixers in charge will leave every music lover very excited.

“Cranes” takes it’s time before introducing the bass drum, a bit more then two minutes to be exact. Monkey Safari get you in the mood with laid back, morphing spheric sounds and teasing percussion. The heavenly, slightly pitched down vocal will trigger a whole array of emotions before the journey even begins. Acoustic sounds combined with sleek piano chords and well placed break downs will make “Cranes” stay in your favorites list for months to come.

Everybody’s darling Kölsch is presenting the first remix. Kölsch is changing up the low frequencies as he adds layers of synthesizer progressions and a heavier bass drum. Sharp percussion and saw tooth sounds are drilling themselves through over ten minutes of musical bliss, but always leave enough space for the vocal to breath. 

Wolf + Lamb are closing out the release with their funk injected version. The lively acoustic drum programming breathes a different life into the track and takes it to a whole nother level. They provide “Cranes” with an overall more uplifting feel.

Portable Sunsets - Sisters

As the world waits with baited breath for a follow-up to ƒin – a record that looks more and more like a modern classic by the day – we get a clutch of remixes trailing Talabot’s DJ-Kicks release instead; a holdover from the holdover, if you will. Thankfully “Without You” was a mighty fine standalone when teased out in late 2013, demonstrating Talabot’s gradual crossfade from nu disco into more shiver-inducing and (whisper it) trance-like territory, and the track is gifted a fresh lease of life on this !K7 12”.

Minimal maestro Thomas Melchior, riding high off his superb recent Perlon EP, spins the original out for nearly 10 minutes, but it’s Oskar Offermann who does the real business here. Abetted by sonar blips and rolling drums that form a techy counterpoint to the emotional nakedness of the original, Offerman sinks the original’s glistening guitar and softtone pads, allowing mere fragments to bubble to the surface now and again. A remix of surprising heft and replayability.

Shir Khan met Fabian from The/Das a few times in Berlin nightlife. Their shared vision for music & life led to this remix on Exploited.

About Mark E:
Mark’s first forays into production were, naturally, edits—warm, understated, and interestingly mellow, with tempos hovering somewhere between 105 and 115 BPM. Slowly, Mark went beyond edits and into original production, starting his own label, MERC, and honing a sound that was uniquely blue collar and utilitarian—classic, almost industrial house, with a tinge of disco warmth. A stellar remix for Matthew Dear’s “Little People (Black City)” introduced him to the Ghostly/Spectral fold, who released his first artist album, Stone Breaker. Shir Khan has followed Mark E since his first edits, saw him DJing one time in Berlin and just felt the time was right to ask for a remix.

Adana Twins - Bleeding Remixes feat Human Life (Preview) | Exploited

UK-based Australian Light Year’s last record ’Never Know’ on Exploited had ’strains of chill wave and witch house, with looped, distant vocal snippets and a breezy vibe. Since his release on Spectral Sound the former electro house producer was saying hello to L.I.E.S, Trilogy Tapes and more straightforward house and techno.’ (Resident Advisor) 
While his first releases were leaning on the more melodic side ’Feeling This Way’ (his follow-up on Exploited) is more functional and stripped down just to the bare essentials - a drum track and a vocal snippet - pretty much influenced by some of the Ghetto House records he was listening to when he did this track. ’Slow Burn’ on the other hand is a collaboration with Jas Shaw from Simian Mobile Disco. Jas had just sourced some new pieces of kit for the SMD live album concept they were working on. They used a Cirklin sequencer - one of the most intuitive analogue sequencers you could probably use. The track pretty much wrote itself once they sequenced their modular synthesizer. The final version was created, produced and mixed in that one session. We hope you enjoy these 2 infectious tracks as much as we do.
