Exclusive: All Is Well - Tortue Jaune

It's hard to not use any superlatives when speaking of Japanese label Mule Musiq, the creative output and playground for all electronic music mainstays, aspiring artists or anybody who simply puts music first. Catalogue number 279 of the label, which is run by Toshiya Kawasaki, comes from iconic Canadian producer All Is Well, who most followers of the scene know under his Fred Everything moniker, and goes by the French name of Tortue Jaune. The artist's altogether six EP, two on Drumpoet Community, one on Permanent Vacation, one on Endless and one on Internasjonal, comes with two original tracks, Sarassota and Tortue Jaune. The latter, which means yellow turtle in English, is AIW picking up on those almost deep dubby cosmic vibes he introduced us to with his Fragments EP on Drumpoet Community back in 2018 - becoming a major success and essential tune for many. The heavily melodic-infused track does not lose any time to soak its listener into a bubble of spheric yet dance floor-oriented soundscapes, putting one into a lose-yourself-in-music summer experience still remains a time- and season-less tune like all of the artist's works.

4 big ol’ chunks of heavy house music are the order of the day from New York producer Ralph Session’s hot new EP for Black Jukebox. Combining his skills as a musician and seasoned DJ along with the technical know-how from his work as an audio engineer, the result is a collection of beautifully crafted, hard-hitting house cutz.
‘That Raw’ features a breathy spoken-word vocal from DJ Amir—one half of the legendary duo Kon & Amir—that laces the soulful, deep production with a hypnotic atmosphere. Thick bass bubbles beneath soaring strings and meandering synth arpeggios to give the track a set-building, big-room feel. ‘Do It’ rocks jaunty snatches of piano and sax over its peppy, skippy beat, with a little New Jersey feel in its incessant, phat-bottomed grove. ‘If You Want’ takes us into a deeper direction with its hazy pad work and dubby touches, with a slinky, rubbery bass groove that throbs hard beneath it all. Turn it up loud and feel it envelop you with its wide-open atmospherics. ‘Raw Sax’ rounds off with a dusty, skipping drum track shuffling around dreamy filtering synths, dubbed-out stab patterns and of course a sultry sax line.

This is the splendid deep follow up EP by our favorite Liverpool artist Petals In Sound. After her great label debut last summer where she already showed us her wonderful atmospheric electronic sound, she now continues on a journey through that same spaced- out house territory. “Dial Tone” and “Lush” are both laid back groovers that sooth every dancefloor and are perfect late, or better, early hours tunes to steer dancers gently towards sunrise and out of smoke filled clubs, homewards with warm musical memories of a danced and spaced out night.

“The Sea and Everything in It” is a personal fave here as it combines great percussive rhythms with her unique style, arpeggios and dark synths electronica, deep like a warm spring day. The outdoor raves will be a perfect setting for this one! Last we asked our other new label member Pete Bandit from Berlin to remix “Lush”. With his own debut “Wild Feelings” he already set the tone showcasing his expert percussive and driving house sound. Here again he turned the original into a loopy “New York House” style jam with cool funky drums that fit in perfectly with the other tracks and make this whole EP a tight and delightful package. She may be making her first appearance on NuNorthern Soul, but Zeynep Erbay is no newcomer. A classically trained pianist who took a turn towards the dance-floor while at university, the Turkish DJ/producer earned her first release on Compost Records way back in 2007 after taking part in the 2006 edition of the Red Bull Music Academy programme. Since then, her career has been on an upwards trajectory, with releases on Fools Gold and Soul Clap Records confirming Erbay as a genuine rising star of underground electronic music.

On the Healer EP, the Istanbul-based producer showcases the more atmospheric, sun-kissed end of her productions, taking a turn away from synth-powered, disco-leaning club tracks towards something more suitable for al-fresco events, sun-down sets, and sofa-bound listening sessions.

Inspired by a poem inscribed on the back cover of the EP, Erbay’s two original instrumental tracks simply ooze with emotion. The poem tells the story of a whale searching for her family while helping others along the way, which acts as a metaphor for our wider search for belonging and acceptance.

This aural narrative first comes to the fore in EP opener ‘Heart of a Healer’, a slowly unfurling stunner in which emotion-rich chords, gentle electronic melodies and Erbay’s poignant and picturesque piano motifs – reminiscent of the classic works of 2000s downtempo duo dZihan and Kamien – gently rise above a chunky dub disco bassline and mid-tempo, triple-time drums.

The story unfolds further on the effortlessly emotional ‘Healer Whale’, where Erbay’s impeccable piano playing ushers in languid, jazz-flecked drums, dubby bass, sumptuous synth-strings and colourful, slow-moving chords. It’s an impeccable, life-affirming composition that’s as beautiful and memorable as they come.

The accompanying remix package is strong, too. NYC-based Italian Danilo Braca, who also mastered the release, provides a fine club-focused fix of ‘Heart of a Healer’, adding Erbay’s brilliant chords and piano riffs to a bed of crunchy machine drums, undulating TB-303 acid lines, punchy electronic bass and bubbly synth sounds.

NuNorthern Soul regular Marshall Watson handles ‘Healer Whale’, first delivering a fine ‘Remix’ version that effortlessly blurs the boundary between dub disco and Balearic nu-disco, before serving up a shorter, ambient ‘Reprise’ version full of gorgeous chords, warming bass, cascading electronic melodies, effects-laden piano, and atmospheric field recordings.
