Mancunian musician, DJ and artist Danny Ward dons his 'Moodymanc' hat to work vocals he recorded with legendary vocalist and old friend Diane Charlemagne (R.I.P.) (Goldie, Moby, High Contrast, London Elektricity) to produce TAKE ME BACK - a piece of retro futurist deep and soulful music. 

James Curd drafts in Sid Who? to deliver some infectious vocals on EVERYBODY COME ON, who is a member of the acclaimed outfit The Swiss and has written music for the likes of Usher, Holy Ghost and Kimbra.

The mighty Irish talent Krystal Klear provides a stonking remix of O.N.O's quirky ‘Modern Dance’ for Exploited here, coming in all guns blazing.

Captain Mustache is at the vanguard of Paris’ electro new school, defining his sound as ‘romantic and burlesque’. He takes his cues from electroclash, ‘80s electro, synth pop and Detroit techno. On MONKEY BRAINS he finds perfect company in New York’s Ulysses who has previously released acclaimed output on Prins Thomas’ label Internasjonal.

A typically chunky, galloping T.U.R.F. beat lays the foundation for looping disco bass and emotive strings to build the tension on KEEP MOVING, slowly teasing us with their full groove. A romantic string motif unfolds, bringing a bittersweet touch to this thumping disco house groover. Typically tasteful stuff from this talented duo.

DANCING YOU AND ME by NEAT features Swedish talent Storken, who has released on Running Back, and channels beautiful ‘80s Balearic vibes into its skippy house template. ‘80s electro bass funk leads the charge while wonky tape delays massage guitar chords and female vocal cuts into the distance. 

PIZZA PIZZA by Budakid &  El Zárate whisks together discofied bass with an unusual stuttered lead riff and magical atmospheres that create a glowing, warm feel. 

JULIO is unmistakably Enduro Disco’s handwork: a classy, spacious slice of modern, dubbed-out disco. Warm, Balearic bass underpins a haze of chopped-up, resplendent disco string samples and tripped-out, unintelligible vocals at the core of the track.

A zingy synth arp pans across the stereo field in dizzying fashion as the track DAYS OF PAST by Paris duo O.N.O begins, crisp claps and thuddy kicks pumping away as sustained strings and vox pads rise from the ether. A dreamy respite comes in the form of the spacey, airy first breakdown, before the elastic, driving bassline groove kicks in.

LIBERDADE (which means 'Freedom' in portuguese) by Joyce Muniz is an intense beast, with acidic bubbling teasing in the distance as thumping kicks and snares trade blows. A menacing bassline snarl stutters and pulses with sinister intent as a variety of percussive loops form an unusual rhythmic groove.

Captain Mustache lays his Parisian touch down on GRAN MUSIC by O.N.O, opting for throbbing analog bass thrusts and ticking old skool percussion, before unleashing a fizzing lead arpeggio and breakbeat pattern that gives the track an entirely new dimension. 

Captain Mustache teams up with citymate and techno stalwart POPOF on BASTILLE, ringing with him his years of experience working with the biggest names in techno, from releasing on Sven Väth’s Cocoon Recordings to remixing The Chemical Brothers, Depeche Mode and Moby.

Dynamic Dutch duo Fouk go to town on their version of EVERYBODY COME ON by James Curd & Sid Who?, honing in on the arp from the original and pushing its camp Italo disco energy to the max.

All in all this is a great eclectic dance compilation.

Former Beatport and Juno Records #1 artist Budakid’s back on Exploited with another two sublime productions. Heady tinges of melody greet us from the first second on ‘Phantonym’, the groove building in a gentle afro/tech vibe with woodblock rhythms and shimmering hi-hats. Pretty riffs abound over a subtle bass of low-register pads and the driving, throbbing bass and stab groove. Dreamy arpeggios dance dazzlingly in the higher echelons of the track, leading the way to a blissed-out breakdown and another delectable synth refrain that chimes in time with the groove. Beautifully crafted, delicately poised, and goosebump-inducing. ‘Pizza Pizza’ is as tasty as it sounds. A more groovy affair than its accompaniment on this release, it whisks together discofied bass with an unusual stuttered lead riff and magical atmospheres that create a glowing, warm feel. Tambourines provide the main percussive propulsion, and hazy sampled chords add to the cosy soundscape. ‘Pizza Pizza’ is a collaboration with Budakid’s buddy El Zárate who is a new face on the scene.
Budakid’s been on fire recently, getting asked by Hot Since 82 to remix Nick Curly for his Knee Deep Recordings label, Moscoman and by Frankey & Sandrino for their Sum Over Histories label, and scored a Beatport No. 1 with Matthias Meyer on Watergate Records. That’s not to mention releases on Disco Halal and upcoming
collaborations with more hot talent...

Two hot remixes of O.N.O. electro-pop smash ‘Gran Music’? Yes please.

Running Back artist Enzo Elia does away with the light touches of the original in favour of something moodier and more atmospheric. Rugged electro dissonance abounds in the bass synth, which chugs away menacingly beneath light snares and driving hi-hat and ride patterns. The breathy vocals take on a different character in this darker context, creating a trippy feel with their hazy tones. Sustained pads build the mood towards the break as the bass synth unfurls its gnarly teeth. Rasping textures and incessant percussive hits fire up the breakdown, leading to crescendo of bleeping arpeggios that hark back to progressive house in its heyday. Throw in some tense stabs and intense, distorted pulses and you’ve got yourself an all-encompassing riot of sound.

Captain Mustache is at the vanguard of Paris’ electro new school. Riding on a wave of incredible form, he counts to his name a collaboration with Daft Punk-affiliate Play Paul on KOMPAKT to his name, a collab with Chicks On Speed on Permanent Vacation, an EP for Helena Hauff’s Return To Disorder label, an album on Bedrock and an outing on Les Yeux Orange with remixes from electro gods DMX Krew and Legowelt. Defining his sound as ‘romantic and burlesque’, he takes his cues from electroclash, ‘80s electro and synth pop and Detroit techno.

Classic drum sounds form the crux of ‘Monkey Brains’, a hypnotic tom rhythm throbbing away amidst punchy claps and crisp claps. A buzzing synth bores a tunnel through the centre of the groove as Ulysses’ twisted vocal stylings enter the fray and echoing stutters permeate the depths of the track. Subtle arpeggios add colour as bright lead blasts cut through the mix. Each element is carefully positioned and utilised efficiently, the track building slowly to a beautiful intensity before stripping right back down again. And so it goes back and forth, undulating between rapture and darkly-tinged introspection.

Previously enlisting the likes of Adamski, Dave Clarke, Paris The Black Fu, The Advent and Keith Tucker to provide vocals on his tracks, Captain Mustache finds perfect company in New York’s Ulysses. Part of Neurotic Drum Band with John Selway, he has previously released acclaimed output on Prins Thomas’ label Internasjonal. Bearfunk, Lasergun, Guidance Recordings and Throne Of Blood.

Enduro Disco continues his mesmerising run of form on Exploited with another
spellbinding three-track release.
‘Julio’ is unmistakably his handiwork: a classy, spacious slice of modern, dubbed-out
disco. Warm, Balearic bass underpins a haze of chopped-up, resplendent disco
string samples and tripped-out, unintelligible vocals at the core of the track. Flurries
of saccharine, mellifluous synths soar and glide from various pockets of the track,
and deft conga rhythms fill in the gaps. More dramatic synth touches and triangle
16ths keep the track captivating to the very last moment.
‘One Jam’ is similarly dreamy, where plucked 8-bit-esque melody twinkles over
chugging bass and breathy male vocal harmonies. A triumphant feel envelops this
track, with shimmering disco hi-hats bringing the rhythm urgency and subtle strings
filtering away in the bedrock of the composition. Blissed-out, spine-tingling gear.
‘Standing Up’ completes this delightful 3-pack in wonderfully colourful fashion. The
bass is more funk-fuelled, blasts of sprightful trumpet jump out of the mix, and sweet
snatches of piano give passing glances through a filtered haze. Samples are twisted
into unrecognisable snatches of melody, and infectious percussive hits pepper the
groove msot pleasingly. Masterful.

T.U.R.F. return to Exploited following a fine run of form that has seen them release on legendary Parisian house producer Phil Week’s esteemed Robsoul label and on Slothboogie’s ‘Dancing With Friends Vol. 2’ compilation. They’ve also provided a remix for Tensnake’s album, found a lot of love on Traxsource and continue their show on Amsterdam’s Lovelee Radio. They’re back here with two no-nonsense tracks to fire up the dancefloor.

O.N.O —’One Night Only’—are fast becoming one of Exploited’s hottest properties. Guest appearances on Radio Nova and Rinse UK have bolstered the success of their releases like ‘In Spekzion’, and they continue to garner acclaim across the board. ‘Days Of Past’ is their latest glorious creation, continuing their faultless body of work.

A zingy synth arp pans across the stereo field in dizzying fashion as the track begins, crisp claps and thuddy kicks pumping away as sustained strings and vox pads rise from the ether. A dreamy respite comes in the form of the spacey, airy first breakdown, before the elastic, driving bassline groove kicks in. A simple piano hook adds some melodic character as the blissed-out feel of those strings/pads rising back into the foreground. Stuttered, pitched vocal samples flutter across the soundscape as open hi-hats press onwards. The arrangement strips down to lead us into gorgeous breakdown, sending tingles up spines until a gigantic snare roll build snaps us back into reality. There’s a final twist as a chord progression finally unfolds in the latter stages of the track, the subtle piano refrain adding an emotive quality to the otherwise hypnotic feel.

James Curd is no stranger to Exploited, having penned a long line of retro-leaning grooves, where he plays most of the musical parts himself. On this occasion, he drafts in Sid Who? to deliver some infectious vocals, who is a member of the acclaimed outfit The Swiss. Sid Who? has written music for the likes of Usher, Holy Ghost and Kimbra, and as part of The Swiss, has remixed Breakbot for Ed Banger Records. Their friendship reaches new levels of beauty on this collab.

Sid Who?’s sassy voice tees the track up, before a rolling bass groove and head-nodding beat explode into life. Funked-up synth squeals play out a simple but addictive melody, while clipped electric piano chords fill in the gaps in the driving groove. Wild vocal cuts build a hook of their own as an analog synth arpeggio envelops the track in spine-tingling style. But what’s this? A pitch-bending, squealing synth solo that sounds like it should be played by a natty keytar player? Yes please, we’ll take that. This glorious ‘80s interlude leads us towards the dramatic vocal harmonies of the breakdown, and thereafter it’s back to business as usual. Supremely groovy with a magical edge, ‘Everybody Come On’ is built to seduce your hips and feet.

"Things start out fairly cheerfully, actually. At one point a messenger arrives with a pie, asks if he has the correct person, and when he finds he does, throws the pie into their face. So now we know where that fad came from. Later, though, the smiles grow more forced. James & Sidwho try to maintain an adequate British reserve, but it's a little hard when you find you are likely to turn into a bed-sitting room. Escalators from the underground are likely to dump you in mid-air, a square meal is hard to come by, and so on."

Brazilian producer Joyce Muniz continues her electro fascination on her new release for Exploited, serving up two slick dancefloor monsters that are both full of her inimitable energy and charisma.

‘Machine Talk’ is electro with a lightness of touch, the lead arpeggio perfectly tuned and EQed to be naggingly infectious without being overbearing. Propelling the track forward, it’s supported by deft, spacious percussion and some nice moments of melodic friction. The breakdown brings on a dreamy feel with thick delays and glistening chime hits, a haunting melody woven deep into the mix as the track progresses. Well-deployed FX hits punctuate just when needed, and each element feels perfectly placed in the mix.

‘Liberdade’ (which means 'Freedom' in portuguese) was the first song written after lockdown when Joyce was able to play for an audience again. This one is a more intense beast, with acidic bubbling teasing in the distance as thumping kicks and snares trade blows. A menacing bassline snarl stutters and pulses with sinister intent as a variety of percussive loops form an unusual rhythmic groove. More cowbell! The bassline also hints at resonant acidic squelchiness, lashing out like a scorpion’s tail as breathy vocals and electric guitar hits further enhance the groove. The heady breakdown lets swirling pads soar around the vocals, allowing for a potent drop when everything kicks back in.

Deliciously plump drum machine toms throb away in sorrowful fashion over hard-smacking clap layers and teasing snatches of the string motif. Those seductive vocals weave their way into the depths of the mix, the atmosphere of the track slowly gelling as pulsing, filtered chords swell. 

The triumphant feel of the elongated breakdown lets these shiny melodic elements dazzle in all their glory as swathes of white noise rise and fall. Reducing to nothing more than the graceful string melodies and the subtlest of piano chords, it’s a thing of real beauty. Wobbling synth FX indicate that we’re to get ready to dance again, and when the beat hits back in, it’s a real fist-pumper of a moment.

‘What’s Up D?’ continues the retro theme, with diva house vocals cut up and set by turns against jaunty chime chords and a warped, nagging, pitch-bending synth hook. The ‘90s house percussion shuffles away with tinges of techno in its clap patterns and soft ride cymbals, while rubbery bass pulsates beneath. It’s a lean, punchy workout that flits between euphoria and heads-down intensity.

‘You Know What My Love’ rounds off the EP in beautiful style. The most gentle of the three tracks, its combination of stuttering vocal cut-ups, spine-tingling chord delays and succinct yet driving beat make for a dreamy experience. The breakdown is a stunning affair, where soaring pads float atop sensual melody and hypnotic FX, sunsets and lapping waves invoked by its heavenly sounds.

Two hot remixes here for James Curd’s collab with The Swiss’ Sidwho? from an all-star team breathing new life into the funky disco killer that dropped in the summer.

Dynamic Dutch duo Fouk go to town on their version, honing in on the arp from the original and pushing its camp Italo disco energy to the max. Their bouncing bassline stomps with attitude over swung percussion, with subtle Rhodes chords adding warmth as the lush choir of vocal harmonies descend. Taking all the swagger of the original and adding a little sunshine into the mix, they’ve done a stellar job.  "We had a blast working on the remix, the original is so much fun!” they beam. “At first we also had a change over to a more housey sound in the middle of the track. However as the arpeggiated lead from the original is super cool, we really wanted to give our remix a bit of an Italo disco feel. After adding the Italo bass we knew this had to be the direction for the whole track. The ‘80s synths, chords and solo added to the vibe!"

Parisian upstarts O.N.O. continue their excellent form on their remix which goes a little more for the jugular than the groovy Fouk mix. There’s a strong ‘80s house/boogie feel to their slinking groove, and the way they lace it with spacey arpeggios is quite scintillating. Dramatic use of the sassy vocal from the intro of the original sets up a high-impact drop, and shining with their usual sleek production values, this remix oozes fun and class.

Mancunian musician, DJ and artist Danny Ward dons his 'Moodymanc' hat to work vocals he recorded with legendary vocalist and old friend Diane Charlemagne (Goldie, Moby, High Contrast, London Elektricity) to produce a poignant EP of retro futurist deep and soulful music. In his own words:
"I had always known Diane as one of the 'older' musicians and artists we all looked up to when growing up in Manchester. We became fast friends and partners in mischief when working and touring together with Urban Cookie Collective when 'The Key The Secret' became an accidental hit (a semi guilty secret!). When I started my solo production career as 'Dubble D' Di was always a mentor and collaborator, taking time out from working with the likes of Goldie (Inner City Life) and touring and recording with Moby to record with me and also to work on our 2020 Soundsystem project, singing live and recording our cover and homage to the timeless Frankie Knuckles anthem 'Your Love'. We remained close up to her untimely loss in 2015 which, for me as so many, hit really hard.
It was on the tail end of one of these sessions that we recorded the vocals for 'Take Me Back' over some beats I had been working on at the time. They had been sitting on a hard drive, being revisited from time to time without anything solid coming together until lockdown, when the spirit and sentiment of the lyrics seemed to resonate so much on both a personal and global level, and inspiration hit in a big way!
The original mix harks back to soulful breaks and broken beat times but (hopefully) with a forward thinking and futuristic outlook. I revisited the vocal once more when I'd done this to do some deeper versions, with a little more space. It's a release that has a lot of personal meaning and emotion for me. I sincerely hope that you enjoy it."

Parisian producer du jour Captain Mustache teams up with citymate and techno stalwart POPOF on ‘Bastille’ for one of the season’s most glittering ensembles. 

Echoing analog drum machine woodblock hits help create a propulsive rhythm atop a sprinkling of glitching electro FX and churning low end pulses before a heady riser delivers us to the wiggling 8-bit vibe bass arpeggio that bores through the track’s meaty middle. More retro computer game sonics emerge in the riff that filters and teases into earshot. Layers of fizzing techno energy raise the track further before we reach the tense breakdown phase. The riff judders and shimmers around the soundscape before one almighty filter sweep slams us front and centre back into the buzzing electro groove. The bassline slowly recedes into the background as warped percussive rhythms lead us out.

Captain Mustache returns to Exploited following the success of his Ulysses collaboration ‘Monkey Brains’ and other releases on KOMPAKT, Permanent Vacation, Bordello A Parigi and Return To Disorder to name a few. Fellow Parisian POPOF makes his debut on Exploited on this release, bringing with him his years of experience working with the biggest names in techno, from releasing on Sven Väth’s Cocoon Recordings to remixing The Chemical Brothers, Depeche Mode and Moby.
