Foster youth are some of the most creative and resilient young people in our communities. They often overcome incredible odds. However, foster youth also face some of the greatest challenges of any one in our society.  Most foster youth experience feelings of abandonment, trauma, and struggle to find the important feeling of inclusion and stability that many of us take for granted.

 

This week on "Exploited: Crimes and Technology" on AM 590 (3:00 PM Saturday) our guest will be Deena Murray.  For many years Deena has provided marketing and events planning services to Million Kids.  Even more awe inspiring is that Deena and her husband Bob, have raised and adopted 12 foster kids.  Deena will share with us some of the challenges in  raising foster kids and help all of us understand why foster youth are so susceptible to becoming victims of trafficking and social media exploitation.

It Happens to Boys Featuring Renowned Author, Dr. John Lee Pt 2

This week we are privileged to have as our guest, Dr. John Lee, author of 24 books (many are best sellers) on issues related to male exploitation. Dr. Lee has appeared on the Oprah Winfrey Show, CNN, NPR, ABC, and has been featured in many national publications. He has lectured at prominent universities around the globe.

Dr. Lee will be speaking at the 11th Annual "It Happens to Boys" Conference at the ABC Recovery Center on October 4, 2019 in Indio, California.

About Our Guest
Born in Detroit, Michigan and raised in Florence, Alabama, John Lee is a graduate of the University of North Alabama (B.S., Sociology & English); the University of Alabama (M.A., American Studies & Religious Studies); and the University of Texas (Ph.D. Candidate in American Studies). Lee served as an instructor at the University of Texas, Austin Community College and University of Alabama before becoming a writer, best-selling author, and public speaker, and is currently teaching again at Austin Community College.

He has been featured on Oprah Winfrey (three times), 20/20, Barbara Walter’s The View, CNN, PBS, and NPR, and has been interviewed by Newsweek, Glamour, The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, and dozens of other national and international magazines and radio talk shows. His highly creative developments in anger management workshops, PEER Counseling seminars, mini-sessions, and the Detour Method (lecture and workshop series on facing regression), are taught worldwide. His Mentone Alabama Men’s Conference drew participants from around the world for over ten years.

Over the past thirty years, John Lee has consulted and trained prestigious institutions in the clinical environment. He has worked with The Betty Ford Clinic, Guy’s Hospital (London, England), The New York Open Center, South Pacific Treatment Center (Sydney), and Mountain Area Health and Education Center (North Carolina), among others.

Lee is the best-selling author of Facing the Fire: Experiencing and Expressing Anger Appropriately and The Flying Boy: Healing the Wounded Man. BASED ON REAL CASES this show is all about how criminals use technology to exploit the innocent and how to keep kids safe from predators.

Human Trafficking and Child Pornography expert, Opal Singleton, has educated tens of thousands of first responders, government agencies, civic leaders, school administrators, medical personnel, faith-based organizations,  parents and grandparents about how predators operate and how to prevent young people from becoming victims of exploitation. Opal is an Instructor at USC, Sol Price Institute for Safe Communities. She sits on the Board of Directors for Rapha House International and has lived and worked in Cambodia combating child sex trafficking.  

Opal authored  “Seduced: The Grooming of America’s Teenagers,” which to date has a 5-star Amazon rating. And, in 2019, she released her follow up book, "Societal Shift: A World Without Borders.. A Home Without Walls."

She is the President and CEO of Million Kids and serves as the Training and Outreach Coordinator for the Riverside County Anti-Human Trafficking Task Force and is contracted for human trafficking training services through the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department through a Department of Justice Contract. 

Opal often sits with parents searching for their missing children and takes calls from teens who are in trouble.  Simply stated: Opal cares deeply about kids and their families. For many years she has examined every published case of human trafficking in the U.S. (and often globally) as well as every child pornography case.  She follows technology trends and looks for new technologies and strategies that are being used by perpetrators to access, groom, recruit and exploit young people.  The weekly show, "EXPLOITED: Crimes & Technology," is designed to share her knowledge and insight with the world, especially those individuals who may work with law enforcement and/or children.
