We are pleased to have Om Unit on the Sunday of our Festival. Jim's work as Om Unit is an ongoing exploration of diverse genres and bpms. Particularly noteworthy is his recent album as Acid Dub Studies, along with his collaborations with artists like Martyn (3024, Deadbeat, and TM404. Here, presented exclusively for Paradigm, is a private mix crafted earlier this year to build anticipation for his upcoming closing set at the festival. For several years he has been active again behind the decks, a DJ, promoter, the other face of the Black Crane label, who runs with Istota. He is a member of the DrumObsession and Sinewave Sounds collectives.

Wax & Jazz Podcast vol. 7 - STC

If you've been following Sonicrampage for a long time, or even for a short time, you're probably aware that I love fast music! What I haven't typically done in my DJ career has been to make mixes that are more, shall we say, mellow. 

Let's change that! 

Maybe it's because I'm getting older, but I've recently started to enjoy more downtempo sounds, and so here is this, the first actual proper downtempo / trip-hop mix I've ever recorded. 

Why did I call it a short window to chill? Well, basically because I actually had a very short window to make this mix. I recorded it off the cuff in thirty minutes the night before our summer vacation. It's not perfect, but it's pretty cool! These tunes are quality.

This week we have a very talented duo who go by the name "pear". The duo, Izzy and Vic, are a pair of friends who fell in love with techno on a Tuesday night in Kyiv, Ukraine. Since then, they’ve dedicated themselves to creating thoughtful mixes that blend heavier techno with melodic electronica. Their sets aim to be ambient, emotive and engaging - featuring artists such as I Hate Models, DJ IBON, Paula Temple and Schacke.

Bracing the decks with some sweet selections this week we have the very talented, Pharmakos.

Pharmakos, aka James Heydon, is not currently affiliated to any club or night but the aspirations are fairly simple: to see the nightlife rise back up to where it should and give people the cathartic release they need. Genres partaken in range from jungle and breaks, right down to the murky depths of industrial techno. Pharmakos has a deep passion and affinity for music, working tirelessly to hone in and perfect his craft to provide nothing but sweet, aural delicacies

Select the Motion 004: Pharmakos

We are up to episode 5 of Select the Motion and as we draw nearer to the zenith of what has been a plentiful aural journey, we are braced by the very gifted, Red Rey.

Red Rey is a non-binary, Filipino, Sydney based DJ & performer. Their music is influenced by queer club culture, sex-positivity, and warehouse raves. Red Rey is part of Ante, an arts collective celebrating people of colour and also an alumni of Ayebatonye’s, Irregular Fit DJ program. Red Rey has recently also appeared on the Covid Room and Room2Radio Line-ups.

Tribal in both rhythm and harmony, with lots of low-end rumble and gritty overtones, their mix extracts the listener out of the mundane and into a distant realm.

RED REY

Select the Motion 005: Red Rey

"This mix was constructed on planes, trains, hotel rooms and in the studio throughout the months May, June, July 2010 using vinyl, CDs, Wavs and a DAT in Ableton Live and Logic.

A suitably diverse number of locations, formats and tools for a diverse label like Ninja Tune. A label that spans two thirds of my life, from putting DJ Vadim records on my christmas list (Santa decided to go with Dr Octagon - Instrumentalyst instead) to being turned away from a sold-out show to celebrate the tenth Ninja birthday, i've truly grown up to the sounds of this label's catalogue.

Ninja's history being so entwined with my own only makes a project like this harder. An ignorant person may not feel guilty about leaving out something from Bogus Order's Zen Breaks whose record was used for the static sound of needle hitting vinyl that appears a few times in this mix or for leaving out Drome. That problem is then compounded by the next - everyone knows the classics - Timber, Witness, Dark Lady... they've been on countless mixes before, but they need to be in here.. perhaps.. perhaps.... perhaps the way out is to get creative with these, to put a new spin on them. Ninja has a rich tradition of getting creative behind the turntables, from Coldcut's groundbreaking ' 70 Minutes Of Madness' Journeys By DJ mix to the diverse Solid Steel series, so why not try and up the ante a little?

So three months and a little over 250 tracks later i arrive at 74 minutes of music mixed, blended, sliced, diced, torn up and finally rendered to audio. A lot of classics, personal favourites, some slept on and a few exclusive acapellas and instrumentals care of the Ninja family. Sure there are some classics left off - The Crow immediately springs to mind, but as it stands this is The Way Of The Ninja', not only a Ninja Tune retrospective but the sound of my last 20 years."
