Sina & the EeIeIe Fish
A Samoan Legend
In ancient times, when the gods still whispered to the wind and the trees sang with the waves, there lived a young woman named Sina. Her name meant “white light,” and her beauty was such that even the creatures of the ocean dreamed of her.
One day, in the depths of the sea, an eel a magical eel saw Sina bathing in a lagoon. Fascinated by her sweetness and her laughter, the fish felt something he had never felt before: love. Day after day, he came closer to the shore, longing to speak to her, to touch her, to be part of her world.
But the eel's love was impossible. He could not live on land, nor could Sina in the sea. So the fish made a decision: to transform. Using his ancestral power, he became a round seed, hard on the outside but filled with fresh water on the inside. It was the first coconut.
Sina found that seed by the lagoon. When she opened it, she saw three markings on its surface: two like eyes, one like a mouth. “It’s the face of the eel!” she exclaimed. And when she drank its water, she felt a profound peace, as if the fish’s love enveloped her.
From then on, the coconut palm grew in every corner of Samoa. Its fruit nourishes, its shade protects, and its water refreshes. It is said that each coconut carries the soul of the eel, which still loves Sina and watches over humans.
