SCB - Fish Tubes

For the fourth and final installment of SCB remix EPs from Hotflush, Mor Elian and Hammer step up for their own interpretations of tracks from Caibu. Fish Tubes is out 21st September. 

Fever AM label co-founder and hybrid club producer Mor Elian provides a spaced out take on ‘Fishbowl’ full of angular drums and woozy synths. For his take on ‘Test Tubes’, Hammer formulates a steady groover for the after hours. 

A new track from SCB, ‘Turquoise Shade’ is a melancholic dose of warm harmonies and stripped back drums, followed by the subdued wanderings of ‘Fishbowl’, which previously appeared on this year’s ‘Engineered Morality’ EP.

For the fourth remix EP in the @scubaofficial 'Caibu' series, @hotflush hand the reins over to Fever AM co-founder @morelian and Bicep affiliate Rory Hamilton aka Hammer, who step up to provide a fine mélange of bounciness and spectrum depth, both muscle-flexing treats in their own right.

There was a prominent sense of urgency as the room began to fill with the dancers and skater types. They moved in amongst one another whilst weaving in time with the mysterious bang of the drum. This was a club rush and it would soon fill the very street outside itself as people congregated from far and wide. Those lucky enough to be inside would stay until the small hours and lose themselves beneath the bounce of percussion and the melodic euphoria which spiralled into the night. 

Hayes & Zeitgeist are set to release an EP on Moonshoe, a melodic affair with a distinguished hint of class and professionalism. This one is warm and a delight to the ears.

Seemingly named after an anti-depressant medication, @forest-drive-west remix of @el-se 'Seropram' is built around an eerily descending three-chord sequence that mimics the peculiar effects of the drug - as skittering hi-hats circle and subterranean frequencies envelop your ears, this anxiolytic piece of half-time experimentalism fogs your brain like a 40mg Zoloft.

Etch's 'Ups & Downs' album is a collection of dubs which date as far back as 2014 and up to the present day. 

The album's tracks are united by being examples of the artists' efforts to escape the shackles of reality by using music as a vehicle. The theme of space recurs across the material - both the 'outer-space' of the universe and galaxies that surround our planet and the 'inner-space' of exploring the infinite recesses and depths of our mind's imagination.

However these creations were made during a period experiencing a (not-uncommon) lifestyle of mad peaks, joy and optimism, and yet also, times of struggle, adversity and depression. That is of course a familiar human tale - but expressed here through Etch's own singular musical vision. 

Etch's music is informed by psychedelic experiences, sci-fi, occult and horror themed films and the evolution of gaming - (these being tools often used to escape the prescribed tedium of society's rules and roles). 

This is then combined with a deep love of sampling vinyl and rearranging breakbeats in an unforced homage to his family roots in UK hardcore breakbeat, jungle and d'n'b. Furthermore, these hybrids are often filtered through a keen understanding of current musical developments which are then explored and deployed where it feels appropriate. 

Add to this a smattering of teenage Goth influences that rear their heads within the dark sound of certain tunes and you've got a serious distillation of culture being explored within these beats.

For their latest hand-stamped white label, the Lobster Theremin crew have procured Montréal homeboy, Dust-e-1, to serve up a healthy dose of late summer, break-infused drum and bass. It is well known that Lobster Theremin are the dons of all things dusty and raw, and it comes as no surprise that their latest 12” fits this aesthetic like a glove. 

Hot on the heels of his debut release on Collect-Call, The Lost Dustplates EP is the second instalment from British-born Canada-based Alex Sheaf’s Dust-e-1 alias. The EP explores a unique soundscape while still providing a a welcomed encore of the rough, breaky London sound that earned garnered Dust-e-1 a spot on our radar. Its influences are distinctly 90’s and distinctly British; a nod to the glory days of jungle, breaks and drum and bass.

Today we have the pleasure of bringing you a slice of banging, warehouse-ready drum and bass straight from the EP’s A2: Civilised Rhythms. The track opens in cosmic fashion, before taking us on a mind-bending journey reminiscent of a trip down Rainbow Road (the lo-fi Nintendo 64 version, obviously). A deep vocal provides the perfect balance to the drum and bass shuffle and effervescent breaks. The eclectic addition of interstellar riffs and a touch of bongos is a refreshing reminder of what the possibilities that lie beyond the confines of a particular time and space. 

It’s a civilised rhythm made for not-so-civilised behaviour. Get your hands on the wax from September 28.

“A Kind of Love EP” is the debut record of Stockholm's house savants HK. The main project of Hampus Ribbing and Kristoffer Banks, HK have garnered attention for their dynamic and unpredictable live sets. The duo now surfaces on Stockholm label Västkransen Records with three original tracks and a remix from French wunderkind and D.KO head Flabaire. 

On his remix of “A Kind of Love”, Flabaire presents a big and dreamy interpretation of the EP’s main track. Although the remix is firmly rooted in the deeper territories of contemporary French house, Donald Devienne’s trumpet infuses “A Kind of Love” with a streak of jazz melancholia.

From analogue club cuts to Sunday morning jams and more personal atmospheres, the Parisian artist navigates seamlessly between genres and influences all along the record.

What strikes first is the thumping yet enchanting club cut that is Dinguzer (A1).
