"Making his label debut and providing the lone interpretation of Madloch and Subnode's 'Pattern Lock' is Yarni. Based in Sheffield, the British artist has carved out a unique place in the electronic underground. With a sound that marries live percussion and catchy melodies with the darker elements of dub techno, Yarni has earned the praise of Mind Against, Throwing Snow, Riva Starrr and Richie Hawtin, while landing releases on some of the world's freshest record labels, most notably Nie Wieder Schlafen and Seven Villas. Now making his Sound Avenue debut, Yarni's masterstroke is to collaborate with sax player Jonoa for a soulful rendition of 'Pattern Lock'. Rhythmically enticing from the outset, a bed of broken beats and chunky bass stabs sets the foundation for a storyboard of tasteful chord stabs and smoky sax riffs. Wavy and whimsical in all the right ways, Jonoa's riffs resonate across the first act, blended perfectly against a backdrop of dimly lit atmospheres and sweeping effects. Furthering its textural appeal is an intoxicating break, building tension through a rising blend of hazy harmonics and drony sax fragments, before pulling back as the beats for a finale that is equal parts musical and groovy. Sound Avenue opens the fall season with a new single from label boss Madloch and frequent studio partner Subnode. Having been paired since the summer of 2018, the creative synergy between Madloch and Subnode has continued to grow. The Belgian duo have released eight originals and a remix since beginning their collaborative partnership. Their borderless approach to production has found the duo in the creative space between house and techno, oftentimes with a glacial, dubbed-out quality that appeases the underground's most discerning tastemakers. Now following their ‘A Short Moment' single to commemorate Another Life Music's 100th release, Madloch and Subnode return to their comfortable home of Sound Avenue with ‘Utopia', alongside remixes from Hernan Cattaneo & Soundexile and Microlot.

The first interpretation of ‘Utopia' is provided by Hernan Cattaneo & Soundexile who make their label debut. With a partnership that now spans well over a decade, the Argentinean trio sit firmly amongst progressive music's elite guard. Hernan Cattaneo needs little introduction and has become known to electronic music lovers simply as El Maestro. He is one of the world's most beloved DJs and his Sudbeat label is widely regarded as one of the best in its field. Soundexile are a Buenos Aires based production duo who have been crafting unique and inspiring electronic music since 2006. The pair are also accomplished DJs, having shared the booth with Hernan Cattaneo, John Digweed, James Zabiela, Dave Seaman and Henry Saiz. Now partnering up with Hernan once again, the trio make their Sound Avenue debut and provide a stunning take on ‘Utopia'. Electrically charged with thumping kicks and a tighter take on the groove, it's energetic prowess beams brightly. Binding rhythmic flow with dynamic tones and sweeping effects makes for a sleek yet commanding first act. Colourful overlays heighten the senses as pixie-like melodies fade in and out of coherence leading into the break. Grandiose and soothing in equal measure, tasteful modulation highlights the centrepiece, elevating mood before getting washed away as the groove rolls forward towards a stirring final movement.

Across darkened velvet skies, "Almesian" burns brightly through the music of Golan Zocher and Greenage. Above South American and Indian continents complex constellations of sound are reflected in intricate percussive rhythms and galloping bassline. Stratified pads and filtered arpeggios glitter in deep reverberating space before "Alhena" appears. Evolving out of the same sonic matrix, a swirling and dense soundscape emerges in the night sky. A new energy formed from infinitely delayed synth lines and ethereal vocal phrases fly above seismic bassline and ticking rhythms.

Familiar melodies emerge across Gemini constellation as a new star is born. Bluum provides an unrivalled display of energy and emotion as "Alhena" charts a new course from the UK. Redolent in rich bassline dominance, new motifs provide elemental dynamism and explosive power. South America is once again the focus of attention where sultry rhythms emerge above Antrim's Cordoba. Exquisite sounds reveal themselves through ambient atmospheres and interwoven particles of noise that coalesce into new motifs and tropes; "Alhena" creates a new paradigm shift.

An established artist on the Proton Music roster, Michael A and his "Fantasy" series marked a high point as volume 1 hit the shelves in September 2020. Now returning with a quartet of new original tracks, "Reverie" opens with an intricate rhythmic and melodic framework as shimmering pads and filtered synth melodies provide an earworm moment. Aptly titled, a crystalline arpeggio pierces the heady rhythms at the breakdown before the track evolves in the second half with poise and grace. "Obsession" is a typically vibrant affair with sophisticated percussive groove blended with syncopated motif and immaculate bass pattern. Building with ease, a meandering synth line flows across the upper frequency range with ease while white noise washes and effects aplenty add depth and dancefloor prowess. "Reminisce" is characterised by a light and intricate percussive groove, anchored by cavernous sub-bass pattern. As it develops, an array of textured layers pulsate across the piece before a delay-rich arpeggio and rasping bass line hit their stride at the mid-point onwards. A dark pulsating gem, "Bloom" powers forward with pumping bassline muscle while a dizzying array of shakers and hats pan the stereo spectrum. Melodic intrigue is provided by soundtrack strings and an array of sparkling synth phrasing, wrapped in a delicate piano shell.

Another regular on the Proton Music and Particles roster, Imran Khan has continued to carve out a continuing presence in the underground scene with a clutch of tracks across 2020. With his "Organik" and "Sunsweat" EPs gracing the flagship imprint in 2019, remixes of Lanvary, GMJ and Dmitry Molosh throughout 2020 have enhanced the UK artist's already impressive reputation. Returning to remix Michael A's "Silent Moments" from "Fantasy, Vol. 1", Imran Khan illustrates why his production skills are much sought-after with a trademark reworking that sees a characteristic rich and dark groove complemented by smooth arpeggio sequences and soaring pads. Building throughout, an array of original production material and intelligent use of Michael's remix components creates a gloriously contemplative offering that is a tribute to Khan's craftsmanship.

A newcomer to the Proton Music ranks, Lucas Rossi has seen his reputation grow steadily since a debut on Nick Warren's The Soundgarden in mid-2018. A seasoned DJ in his native Argentina, the South American has continued to find his music signed to such high-profile imprints as Balkan Connection, onedotsixtwo and Armen Miran's Hoomidaas. The latter with his three-track "Meeting Point" EP in March 2020. Reworking the title track from "Fantasy, Vol. 1", Lucas Rossi has created a rich sonic tapestry that centres around a hypnotic rhythmic bed of hi-hats, shakers and toms that provide the perfect vehicle for melodic tropes from the original to float across the eight-minute track with ease.
