Mirror neurons represent a distinctive class of cells that fire both when an animal executes an action and when it observes another individual performing the same action. Discovered by Italian neurophysiologist Giacomo Rizzolatti and his team at the University of Parma while doing a research on the neural representation of motor movements in monkeys, the precise function and influence of these neurons has become one of the most important topic in neuroscience. They have been linked to many behaviours and abilities, from empathy to learning by imitation and language acquisition, as well as implicated in conditions such as autism and other brain disorders. These findings suggest that the mirror neuron system plays a key role in our ability to experience empathy.

Initiated by sound artists France Jobin and Fabio Perletta, Mirror Neurons is a media-project investigating the notion of empathy and physical distance. The entire album is the result of extended sound files exchange between Montréal (Canada) and Roseto degli Abruzzi (Italy). Each of the pieces is based on rough sounds and their consequent re-working, listening and reaction, processing and imitation. The ongoing process helped artists to draw inspiration in terms of stimuli for the act of composing itself in two very distant cities, different climate, time zones and languages.

Like much of Jobin and Perletta’s recent works, Mirror Neurons explores the artists’ interest in intersection between science and art, as well as the infinitely small and invisible. In order to further develop the concept of distance/connectivity, visual artists XX+XY from Rome have been involved in the process. They created a multi-dimensional, generative and ever-changing sound visualization through the use of quiet textures and subtle movements emphasizing the slowed sense of time of the work itself. Thought to be performed live in a big space, the video aims to create an immersive environment and a unique occasion to reflect about the behaviour of our emotions and the importance of human interaction.

'7456. Live at Human Resources, Los Angeles' summarizes Fabio Perletta’s recent works 'Genkai' (in collaboration with sound designer for Pioneer Haruo Okada) and 'Ichinen', both released by LINE imprint, in 2016 and 2017 respectively. As it blends the two albums’ distinctive approaches, it reveals their contrasts in terms of hi dynamic range and aesthetics of hesitation, silence and instability. This live recording marks the end of a cycle of works initiated with 'Kaikō' (collaboration with Haruo Okada, 901 Editions, 2014), which ruminates on notions of presence, limitation, contemplation, patience and humility. 

Like the photograph on the cover, the music explores distance, proximity and the necessity to be emotionally detached to achieve balance. It is impossible to enjoy a flower if it’s viewed too closely, it will appear blurry. Like the photograph, the music doesn’t change, instead it exists in potentially infinite variations through its exposure to each listener unique memories, experiences, and perceptions. '7456. Live at Human Resources, Los Angeles' thus asks the questions: is there and where is truth? Are artworks really finished? Do artworks which artists create belong to them? Duality, inconsistency, impermanence, and paradoxes are themes Fabio Perletta is questioning and enjoys his inability or need to solve.

'7456. Live at Human Resources, Los Angeles' was recorded live on June 11, 2017, as part of Fabio Perletta’s VOLUME residency. His appearance was made possible with support from DE.MO./MOVIN’UP, II session 2016. MOVIN’UP II session 2016 was promoted by Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism, General Directorate for Contemporary Art and Architecture and Urban Suburbs, General Directorate for Performing Arts and GAI – Association for the Circuit of the Young Italian Artists.

After a longer delay than I would have liked, the Sound Propositions podcast is back. I’m very pleased to finally share this conversation with Bruno Stucchi, graphic designer and co-founder of the Die Schachtel label. Stucchi reflects upon the evolution of the label, the suppressed history of Italian experimental music, and the continued importance of big ideas.

Die Schachtel is a partnership between Bruno Stucchi and Fabio Carboni, who met online during the peak of eBay record collecting, before Discogs and social media convinced us that there is nothing new under the sun. (Not that these two will ever stop looking....) They exchanged records and, more importantly, they exchanged ideas, culminating in an ambitious excavation of the lost history of Italian experimentalism. The label debuted in 2003, and has since built a strong reputation for their meticulous editions, unquestionably one of the guiding lights of the current flourishing of experimental music in Milan and Italy more broadly.
