A Sunday afternoon delight from two of techno's most beloved heavy-hitters arrives exclusively on our Soundcloud.

Berlin techno viking and founder of Dystopian Records Rødhåd and the young, accomplished and Mote-Evolver regular Rene Wise have released their 4 hour set recording from March 2023, a huge B2B session that saw the pair delve in and out of eachother’s company for our last Continuum party. They played an extended set during the final Continuum 24+hour party of the season this Spring. 

The session, which started at 4pm as the tail end of the afternoon drew in and went on til 8pm ahead of a closing set from Ben Klock and Marcel Dettmann, proved to be one of our highlights from the event. It's a real treat to be able to share the full recording; smashers from the get-go that takes us through the hard and heavy, to the atmospheric and energetic.

Function’s tale begins with a gregarious mother who would keep him occupied as rookie selector for neighbourhood gatherings while growing up in Brooklyn and New Jersey. Music was his world, and it wasn’t long before he found himself standing in awe before Jeff Mills in 90s NYC at the infamous nerve centre of Club Kid hedonism Limelight, where he went on to pick up a Thursday-night residency himself. Few DJs can claim to have been around during such a moment in club history, but ten years later came another. His friendships with Regis, Silent Servant and Female turned into the much acclaimed collective Sandwell District, a pivotal sound for an era that forced everyone’s attention towards Berlin. There he became Berghain resident and played a role in shaping the club’s fabled musical opus. In the years since (and following Sandwell’s dissolution) he’s matured in his own right, with a number of mesmeric releases (most recently ‘Green EP’ released on his self-run imprint Infrastructure back in May), collaborations with the likes of Vatican Shadow, Luke Slater and Steve Bicknell, a heavy touring schedule that criss-crosses the world at rapid clip and Bassiani residency to boot. Function’s techno is an ambient fog in which sinister arctic synths and perilous rhythms collide to produce an exquisite fusion that would be hard to mistake for anyone else. Those grainy textures, subterranean ripples and punishing kick drums are a hypnotic rework of his many influences: 90s loops with a more modern and sharper industrial edge. Bassiani Podcast 186 is an impassioned live-recording from the club that weaves through a number of hammering tracks and steadily climbs towards its furious climax. A hair-raising three-hour beast courtesy of this decorated techno behemoth.

Now in its 200th instalment, this Podcast has given voice to a diverse offering of global talents across the musical spectrum, from the democratic rhythms of zeitgeist appropriate techno and house through to more avant-garde synthwork.

This next guest has cast a large shadow over the technosphere, so large in fact, that no introduction could fully encompass the breadth of his achievements. But in brief: Ben Klock is a titan whose formative years were spent playing marathon mixes to the crowds at Berlin’s (then recently opened) Berghain. Off the back of his endurance sets and the club’s success he became a household name whose influence grew to be felt across the world, with a body of work that includes appearances at an exhaustive list of clubs and festivals, a number of hot releases on Ostgut Ton and an equally respected self-run label (Klockworks) to boot. On this second imprint, his own productions have repeatedly seen the light of day, alongside those from the likes of DVS1, Sterac, Stef Mendesidis and younger talents like Temudo and Vil & Cravo. The sound, ubiquitous as it is, will be familiar to anyone involved in the world of electronic music and there’s good reason for that: Klock’s deep and percussive work and ability to pull from a wide range of influences have earmarked him as a unique agent for the techno cause. Atmospheric and delivered with hammering force, Klock’s refined palette for rhythms is as relevant now as ever. Ken Ishii: A Pioneer of Japanese Techno
Ken Ishii debuted on the renowned Belgian techno label R&S Records in 1993, quickly rising to Number One on the UK's NME magazine techno chart. His first album, "JELLY TONES" (1995), was critically acclaimed, and the video for the single "EXTRA" won MTV's "Dance Video of the Year" in 1996. Internationally regarded as a top pioneer of Japanese techno, Ken produced the official theme song for the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano. In 2000, he was featured on the cover of Newsweek, symbolizing Japan's dynamic new culture. His work includes producing the soundtrack for the Japanese hit film "Whiteout" (2000) and contributing exclusive tracks to the cult-favorite video game Rez. Ken has performed at iconic venues worldwide and won the Best Techno DJ award at the 2004 Dance Music Awards in Ibiza. He regularly headlines major dance festivals, including Monegros (Spain) and WIRE (Japan). As a prolific producer, he founded his label, 70 Drums, in 2002 and released several albums, including "FUTURE IN LIGHT" (2002) and "SUNRISER" (2006). In 2012, Ken launched the project Ken Ishii Presents Metropolitan Harmonic Formulas and released "MUSIC FOR DAYDREAMS." His recent highlights include performing at the Nintendo SWITCH Presentation World Premiere in 2017 and releasing the album "MÖBIUS STRIP" in 2019. In 2020, he produced the official theme track for PAC-MAN's 40th anniversary. Ken continues to expand his creative reach, composing soundtracks for Netflix's anime series "Yakitori: Soldiers of Misfortune" (2023) and the VR game "C-Smash VRS" (2023-2024). He has also launched a noh & techno collaboration performance series, TECHNOH LAB., with noh actor Manjiro Tatsumi. Beyond music, Ken co-brews his own craft beer, “KIKK-IPA,” with RISE & WIN Brewing Co., winning silver prizes at the International Beer Cup in 2022 and 2023. Currently, he is more enthusiastic about making music than ever, releasing new EPs, collaborating with various artists, and touring globally. He is working on a collaboration album with a jazz musician, set for release in late 2024.
