One of reggaeton's most in demand artists, DJ Rosa Pistola debuts fabric this Friday night and touches down with a special mix for us ahead of time.

DJ Rosa Pistola pushes a reggaeton sound that is distinctly her own. Often blending popular tunes with underground tracks, or more sensual ballads with high energy bangers, she quite literally takes the sonic rough with the smooth, and the result is always a truly captivating combination.

Columbia born, now hailing from her adopted-home town of Mexico City, Rosa Pistola has a distinct DIY style engrained in the culture of reggaeton. Synonymous with fast paced, eclectic DJ sets that also speak to her mission to platform the sounds of the Latin underground with the world, Pistola pushes a reggaeton sound that is distinctly her own. Often blending popular tunes with underground tracks, or more sensual ballads with high energy bangers, she quite literally takes the sonic rough with the smooth, and the result is always a truly captivating combination.

But it’s not just through her DJ sets that Rosa Pistola is pushing the reggaeton sound and movement. Her regular NTS show UNDERMIX is a celebration and platform of local underground talents from Mexico, each mix featuring producers supported and nurtured by Rosa herself.

Her podcast for us, coming ahead of her fabric debut on 9th December where she will play a bouncing FABRICLIVE alongside the likes of DJ Assault, Teki Latex, Jensen Interceptor and more, is a vibrant, party-fuelled, celebration of Latino sounds. Catchy, flavourful vocals team up with swinging rhythms and colourful reggaeton from all corners of the genre's spectrum. The mix, like much of her creative output, also successfully captures the energy and life of the city she loves.

Will Automagic aka William Lynn moved to New York in 1992 from Austin, TX and was already DJing there by the mid 90s before he was legally old enough to be in the clubs. Over the years he has played all over including past NYC residencies at Vandam and as part of the roving warehouse party SPANK, and has produced records as part of Automagic, The Carry Nation, and Majorettes. Now playing solo and as part of The Carry Nation at their Good Room residency in Brooklyn and all over the world, other new projects include the new record label Major Records. Will’s sound is diverse but is House-centric and has always retained a deep rooting in Disco and Dub. He thrives on the surprises that can come with playing in each new environment.
This mix right here covers what he has been most excited to play on dance floors very recently. A highly trippy, tracky & techy journey mix!

I was playing in the smaller room 200 cap room (the annex) with low lighting, a booth shaped like a spaceship & the warmest sound system you can imagine.

+ 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐜𝐡 𝐭𝐨 𝐩𝐮𝐭𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐬𝐞𝐭 𝐭𝐨𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫?
This was actually my first 3 hour set, so I knew I wanted to use the time to showcase the different sounds / tempos / styles I love, the challenge is always making it all work together.

My set time was 2.30-5.30am so I sort of saw it as a bit of a warm up and a bit of a peak time and a bit of a closing all in one, so wanted to cover more fun peak time bass-y bits, fast wormholey half time & then some deeper dubstep for the end. This excerpt is from the fast wormholey section.

I used to really plan out my sets but i’ve got a lot better at being less prepared over the past year or so, I now tend to prep for multiple gigs as I go by creating an ‘ideas’ playlist for each gig & dragging tracks into it when i come across them. Then when the gig gets closer to the time I go through the playlist & refine the tracks into themes or speeds.

Having everything broken up into themes really helps me keep some structure / narrative. I like to always have a rough end point / goal to get to, especially for longer or deeper sets such as closing.

With my records I try to do the same thing & pack them in order of when I might play them throughout the night. Trying to get better at taking my records with me as I v much got out of the habit.

+ 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐬𝐞𝐭𝐬 / 𝐦𝐢𝐱𝐞𝐬 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐝𝐨 𝐚 𝐥𝐨𝐭?
Yes definitely, I only really get anxious for a gig when I struggle to settle on a theme / vibe. This tends to only happens for gigs where I’m a little unsure of where I fit musically though. If it’s a gig the theme is usually focussed on location / set time - so a deep / dubby warm up or a sexy peak time or maybe a deep & wiggly closing.

In the UK, strange brew & the white hotel and laak in the hague oh and outra cena in lisbon actually i’ve heard that’s sick!

A local party would be goodness, they've been putting together consistently sick lines up for a v long time. Djs I'd like to big up - Softi (@jazz_brown) & benk0 (@benkos), they both have a more psychedlic / trippy approach to blending techno & bass / dubstep together which i love.

Probably an @ilian-tape night at the cause in December, it was the first time I'd had that kind of experience in a club in london in a long time. But tbh I still might not be over REEF at bergs in november yet, that @djrum closing set….

+ 𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐛𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐚𝐥 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐲?
Long set times, lots of haze, sound system that feels like a duvet, variety of sounds / genres, kind staff and security and the space and freedom to sit down and hang out or explore. I think this sense of freedom is something that missing at a lot of UK clubs.

Bitzer Mal & Herc Morse Live @ Bakk Heia 09/03/23

Virginia wears many different musical hats and always has. The Berlin based woman is a DJ, vocalist, song writer and producer who saw chart success early on in her career, as well as receiving underground acclaim for her album Fierce For The Night back in May 2016. She has written music with the likes of Steve Bug, has played a hybrid live and DJ set all over the world and has ties to labels like Ostgut Ton, Dolly Deluxe and Underground Quality. She has also famously provided vocals to some of Steffi’s most classic vocal tracks such as ‘Yours’, so is very much the voice of contemporary house music. 

Her podcast for us is entitled Greetings From My Garden - Music For The Heart Mix and shows off another side to the artist. It is made up of music more suited to home listening than dancing in the club, and features tracks from Massive Attack, Slam, The Orb, plus a new one of Steffi’s forthcoming album on Ostgut Ton. As such it’s a soothing listen of dreamy synths and comedown sounds, deep grooves and selection emotions that is the perfect soundtrack to the last days of summer.

Owners of the London-based modular synth store and masters of improvisation; London Modular Alliance may be one of the most breath-taking collectives in the contemporary electro scene. Their live act set up is far from the regular. 

Their productions hold the same military precision as their sets. Counting a number of releases on labels such as Hypercolour Records and ART Records, the trio have developed an ingenious attitude in the studio that is fresh and innovative every time.
