For the 18th edition of our mix series we are joined by a revered breakthrough of recent years, @ciel_dj.

A key figure on and off the dancefloor, Toronto-based Ciel has been an ever growing force on the electronic scene. Spearheading the female focused Work In Progress collective and co-founding the touted Parallel Minds imprint, she has helped bring diversity, safety and representation into the clubs whilst also working with advocacy groups to change the city’s laws to be more favourable towards creative ventures. Pushing a distinctive sound that is characterised by a club-focused blend of deep and energetic contrasts, she showcases why she is one to watch with a standout mix for the Junction 2 series.

Here is what Ciel had to say about the mix:

“This mix was inspired by 1) clubs reopening 2) my love of cheesy tech house wafters and 3) a desire to present the most authentic version of myself as a DJ. I think most Djs have very complicated feelings about making mixes, the process of premeditating a mix at home away from an audience and the insatiable drive for perfection can both be very anxiety-inducing. So I chose to do as little planning as possible, seeking instead a truly spontaneous recording experience with zero plan and nothing more than 2 USBs full of bangers. The result is a high energy 90-minute trip into trancey house, techy rollers, dub techno, and minimal-UKG tools. Play this on your way back to the club.”

Junction 2 Mix Series 018 - Ciel

With what was mostly a full and fruitful year for us with many beautiful moments, we now turn our eyes forward to what is looking to be a very exciting year for us at Phonica as we walk into our 20th year of being alive. 2022 saw our mix series get even more killer contributions from artists like Paramida, Sally C, Fred P, Eden Burns, Alex Kassian, Erol Alkan and more. 2023's series line up plans to keep moving up and we have opened this years mix season in the capable hands of two of the finest DJ/Producers doing it right now. Bringing nothing but powerful, euphoric and goddess energies it can only be Octo Octa and Eris Drew of T4T Luv NRG. Amazingly celebrated for their strand of psychedelic, rolling progressive, trancey-house and break rhythms we can't think of two better selector's to take on our series. With an excellently curated compilation and mix for our good friends at Fabric last year as well as two banging cassettes on T4T we can't begin to imagine what this year has in-store for Maya and Eris but we have no doubt it's even more on the upward trajectory! Most likely to the heavens and back! We had a chat with Maya and Eris to see what they have been up to lately and little about how they approached the mix.

Trackhighlight Chez Damier & Makèz - „Do It“ (Adeen Records)
An uplifting deep house tune with organic percussions, a thick and bouncy bassline, buttery chords and a fun acid melody that comes in mid-track. I love the two funky disco breaks, definitely a highlight for me.
I bought this record in Japan, while I was on tour in Asia and it immediately became a staple in my record bag. 
The EP is a collaboration between Adeen and legendary Chicago label Balance. All four tracks are produced by Chez Damier and Makéz, plus a smoky remix by Mr G.

The album is filled with surprises, seamlessly transitioning from acid infected vibes and catchy electronic pop to avant-garde electro cuts. But this is "The Mixtape", a 45 min energetic and deep dive into essential Electro and Detroit Techno. Launched in 1985, Metroplex opened with the Model 500 EP "No UFOs." The global demand for his new sound provided Atkins with an outlet for a string of iconic releases. 40 years on, he remains deeply committed to pushing the boundaries of sonic exploration.

For Carhartt WIP Radio, Juan Atkins has created a Metroplex anniversary mix that underlines the label’s innovative style, with tracks by himself, as well as his daughter Milan Ariel, and producers like Robert Hood.
