"A few eyebrows may have been raised when Job Jobse snuck into our top DJs of 2014 list, but for those who have seen him play over the past few years it won't have come as a surprise. Jobse gradually built his name as a resident DJ at the much-loved—and now defunct—Amsterdam nightclub Trouw. He was a regular at its predecessor, Club 11, and his party Drukpers was the first-ever event at Trouw when it opened in 2009. Five years later, Jobse brought the house down when he span the last-ever set at the club, something he describes below as "the biggest honour I can think of." In the intervening years he played a significant role in establishing Trouw as one of Europe's best clubs. His melodically rich mix of house, techno, disco and Italo soundtracked countless parties, and as the club's booker he helped shape the broad-ranging music policy that defined Trouw. Until recently he was also the label manager at Life And Death, the label that along with Innervisions has popularised a style of dance music that Jobse himself calls trance—or at least a form of it. In our recent Thoughts on 2015 piece, we said this style has become the dominant force in underground club music; with his international bookings stacking up, Jobse looks like he's now a key name in this movement."

Laurent Garnier ist nicht nur der dritte Pariser, der Ramona in diesem Monat beehrt, sondern auch der – mit Verlaub – sagenhafteste. Im Manchester der späten Achtziger hat es den begeisterten Musikliebhaber und damaligen Gastronomie-Azubi per Zufall hinter die Plattenteller eines namenslosen Clubs verschlagen, wo er den Hunger der anwesenden Meute mit allerlei Gedöns zwischen Abba und Zappa stillen musste. Nachdem er sich dort die Hörner abgestoßen hatte, folgte der nächste Club mit besserem Musikprogramm und auch heute noch klingendem Namen.
In der Hacienda durfte Garnier neben Mike Pickering und Graeme Park an dem Soundtrack einer Stadt Teil haben, die zwischen New Order und den Happy Mondays schlichtweg in afroamerikanische Tanzmusik verliebt war. So drehten die überspannten Clubkids umhüllt von der schwarz-gelben Nuklearästhetik des Clubs, Woche für Woche Pirouetten zu Songs von Carly Simon, Jomanda, oder dem FPI Project und Tracks von Adonis, Derrick May und DJ Pierre.
Zurück in Paris und derart geschult, wollte Laurent Garnier auch Frankreich den „Summer Of Love“ bringen. Einem Club namens „Wake Up“ und seinem nicht zu bremsenden Enthusiasmus sei Dank, sollte er nicht nur dieses Vorhaben in die Tat umsetzen, sondern auf dem Label FNAC bzw. F-Com Platten veröffentlichen, Techno in Frankreich installieren, mit seinem Plattenkoffer durch die Welt reisen und schließlich mit „Electrochoc“ ein Buch veröffentlichen, von dem sich einige DJ-Autoren ein Scheibchen abschneiden könnten. Eine der letzten wirklich großen DJ-Figuren unserer Zeit, dabei grundsympathisch und zwischen Techno und King Tubby auch noch musikalisch versiert wie kaum ein zweiter DJ. Was für ein homme du métier!

In 2013 a duo began to surface on the radar, associations and releases on Atomnation and Kompakt began to reinforce their status. The pair from the Netherlands, Harm Coolen & Merijn Scholte Albers, make up the Weval project which is about to release its debut album for Kompakt. They met in 2010 and describe their relationship and its outcomes as "organic". Their musical backgrounds vary and have led to a clash of ideas and concepts which is prevalent throughout their work. We caught up with the pair and asked them to record a mix.

Michael Mayer and German techno go hand in hand. In the late 90s Mayer became one of the co-founders of Kompakt, the Cologne institution that’s widely regarded as one of the world’s most important techno labels.

Outside of his quintessential imprint he’s also earned his stripes as a DJ, with an ear for melody and a flair for extended marathon sets helping to define his 20-year career.

He’s also been a staple of Farringdon history, with his Room One appearances dating back as early as 2003 and a legendary edition in our mix series. Mayer has played the club over 20 times since then, but one of the most memorable remains his Room One set from back in April 2012.

Closing out the room after a set of wizardry from Craig Richards, Mayer stepped up to deliver 3.5 hours of the warm, luscious house that’s been at the heart of his 20-year career.

With his return to Room One happening just a few days from now, we dug through our archives to find Mayer’s set from that night to share here in anticipation.

It’s people like Mano Le Tough who make DJing into an art form, as you can tell from the mix he has done for us ahead of our festival in São Paolo this weekend. The connection he makes with dance floors are always as deep as can be; with a real sense of melody, emotion and song like structure, he crafts sets that make a lasting impact on those who hear them. This has resulted in him being one of the busiest DJs on the circuit, on a par with deep house heroes Ame and Dixon, who he plays with regularly. As a producer, his smooth and mellifluous sounds land on labels like Permanent Vacation and more recently Pampa, which is a perfect fit for his curious sense of melody.  

This week’s mix is an hour of deep house that rumbles through a humid jungle, zones you out with hypnotic vocal tracks and encourages you to day dream amongst distant pads. Even when things turn more towards a techno groove later on, you still remain deeply entrenched in the groove, marching on through to a trippy climax that gently stirs you out of your hypnosis with a real celestial charm.
