Using the platform of fabric and FABRICLIVE that the London club have lovingly nurtured over the past 20 years, fabric Records present the past and future with 20 artists across 20 tracks, for the 20th Anniversary celebration of the beating heart of EC1.

1999: the beginning of the story. 1,000 weekends and 3,000 events, together with a seminal CD series that wrapped up last year with closing instalments from fabric residents Craig Richards and Terry Francis with club founder Keith Reilly, alongside London underground innovators Burial & Kode9 for FABRICLIVE. 

This special 20th Anniversary release reflects the history of the club from the very beginning to the current crop of residents. Here you’ll find artists who helped shape the sound of the club, grew up in the club, have been inspired by the club and have become part of the fabric family. 

FABRICLIVE represents the finest in dubstep, drum & bass, jungle, breaks and experimental beats. Houndstooth’s Special Request leads the charge in trademark style, opening the floor to Friday night luminaries Source Direct and J Majik. Shackleton and Pinch & Trim started playing the club during the birth of the UK dubstep scene and give a taste of the hugely disparate evolution of bass music. Daniel Avery and B.Traits show off their dancefloor versatility, while Rupture co-founder Mantra plants a flag for London’s vibrant musical future. Closing are two of the club's longest associates Groove Armada and original FABRICLIVE resident James Lavelle as UNKLE.

fabric has been responsible for nurturing the underground London house and techno scene, inspiring and revolutionising the clubbing landscape by confidently proving that you don’t have to book commercial acts to be a success. The breadth of talent here displays the far reaching arms of the night - with an opening spread of melodic techno from Nina Kraviz, the shuddering electro of Steffi, and evolving experimental house of Margaret Dygas. New resident IMOGEN veers things in a darker direction towards Cassy’s pumping house and Marcel Dettmann’s classic late-night techno. Anastasia Kristensen drives ahead while Houndstooth’s Call Super takes things down a deeper notch with a track reminiscent of many a classic night in room 3, and Maya Jane Coles steps up with a playful slice of house. British dance music pioneer Sasha closes out on a euphoric high with layers of building vocal and melody.

Lusine has been one of my favourite producers for a long time. I'm just going back over some of his first releases on Ghostly International from the early 00's, and it's amazing how ahead of the game he's always been. His combination of delicate productions and beautiful warm analogue melodies, intricacies and amazing shuffling grooves have been a big inspiration for me over the years, with his "A certain distance" album from 2009 being one of my all-time most listened too albums.

So Lusine was one of my ideal remixers for the album, and thanks to Sean at Decibel festival, the hookup was made and he was into the idea. He's turned out a beautiful remix of Woven Ancestry, which if you've seen me play recently, you probably heard in my set. The mix has special balance of being a great piece of music to listen to at home, but then when it's unleashed in a club it's groove takes on a whole new life which I hadn't seen coming until I tried it out - Thanks Jeff!

I apologise for making a 13 minute track with only 3 different sounds!

It's a bit of a reaction to our constant information bombardment and instant gratification music - you just need to step back from everything for a while and let it wash over for this one to work.

The whole thing is hinged on a sequence of 4 notes playing at different rates forwards and in reverse using Alexander Randon's Fugue Machine. It's a simple pattern but it grabbed me and made me want to strip the track back to the minimum possible number of elements to focus on the pattern.

I think we pick up on the fact that there's an interesting pattern hiding in there in the simplicity. The fast riff that opens up is a classic Juno 6 sound too, which also made me want to put it out there unadulterated. I gave in eventually and added one percussive element and some extra chord layers, but you have to wait about 8 minutes for that.

It's certainly not for everyone, but I hope it works for you...it gets pretty intense too btw, but I guess you've had that before from me.

‘True’ emerged as an unexpected but welcome side effect during Sasha’s dedicated studio time reinterpreting his stunning ‘Scene Delete’ LP into a musical score for his upcoming REFRACTED:LIVE shows. The original cut dropped on Late Night Tales last Autumn, enhanced by London band Dems’ haunting vocals. Now three very different artists, all breaking ground in their respective fields, deliver their unique interpretations.  ‘True (feat Dems) - The Remixes’ is out on March 23rd, 2018.

Second, thinking in category Maxisingle: a spinning-tool for the club – another form of another functionality: accelerating the rhythm, lowering the harmonicmelodious, still preserving the nature of the song. And each version should make you HOT for the other!

Nata Alma, a voice loses itself in the infinite, a car brakes, a horse whinnies, the sun scorches relentless. Further, further on, towards the flickering, stoically. Water, flames on the horizon, Fata Morgana, a mirage. »And you might say, we've got no place to go?« - okay? no notokay at all!: Shuffle!

Nata Alma, melancholic Eight-minute-forty. A love song, a wave good-bye: »And you might say, that you need me no more?« sings Sidsel Endresen alongside Bugge Wesseltoft's swells and ebb-aways – metal never sounded so longing; a buzzing swing, a siren call from afar.

Robag Wruhme takes a seat at the organ and plays minor bass notes. He gets up, leaves the room and lays down a dry rock of funk: wooden kick on wooden snare, tight-cut voices, driving hi-hats and shakers, gated synth danglers and percussion loops. Relentless, stoically. »And you might say, that it's over?« – relentless, maybe, but that's how he creates the Further: keep going! dance it off! a new day rising!

And right here. Flip it and keep on moving: Venq Tolep. A summer meadow, grass-stains, a gentle breeze, an early smell of hay. Venq Tolep. Endorphins tickle under the skin. A percussive spectacle, dance of the insects. Hopping around in flat shoes, the beat is phat and reverberated by a cluster of trees. Stabs on the e-piano set in, picturing the euphoric moment when Loving-feelings walk hand-in-hand with a Hint of Melancholy.
