Storm Stereo started in 2016 as a DIY show to channel music obsessions of every genre. From punk, R&B, soul and folk music to avant garde, experimental and electronic, Storm Stereo uses Irregular Frequencies as autobiography and narrative, as research and exploration, as sonic setting and companion.

Jake Muir is a Berlin based sound artist, DJ and field recordist. He approaches his practice as a listener first, carefully curating, layering and processing sounds that help him deconstruct and contextualize his lived experiences and influences. Using investigative software methodologies, DJ techniques and engineering dexterity, Muir makes deeply personal sonic art that fluidly traverses genre membranes, encouraging reflection and sometimes prompting psychedelic states.

This mix is essentially a studio distillation of the two DJ sets I played during bathing hours at Washington Baths in Portland, Maine last year, for @poolemusicltd. Beyond the aquatic aesthetics tying back to saunas and my time spent living in California and Seattle, it is also inspired by an essay I discovered while trying to find cover art for Bathhouse Blues. “Spiritual dimensions of self-transformation in Sydney’s gay bathhouses”, by Jason Prior and Carole Cusack, explores how gay bathhouses were viewed as places of worship by the patrons and what transpired there as being “rituals”. Given this backdrop, there are various references in the mix, both literal and figurative, to said dimensions associated with rituals and spirituality.

Tearooms in post-revolution Czechoslovakia symbolised places through which new spiritualities were flowing, and the influx of largely uncharted ways of life closely intertwined with new age, ambient, folk and minimalism. With their minds altered thanks to smuggled records by Fripp & Eno or Steve Reich, this loose network of musicians had begun composing meditative music, using loops and handmade instruments, with a different sensibility. Compared to the boisterous Zappa-adjacent and booze-soaked underground movement, which was led by Plastic People of the Universe and provoked the state authorities, this music was meant instead for tea rooms and spiritual sites like churches or monasteries, as if occupying some place where time flows anticlockwise. This is an album about black stars casting shadows on the present. Just like we can’t see if a dead star a million lightyears away is already dead, we can’t see if the future we have set our sights on actually exists. Becoming an artist and taking the risk associated with such a ludicrous, inadvisable and uneconomic „Lebensentwurf“ makes you constantly question your life’s choices and consider other paths you could have gone. But therein also lies the beauty and the greatest power of the artist. The pondering of eventualities is as important to successful art as any muse or idol. At least for me. The never-ending melancholy, the fear of failure and the boundless joy experienced during the creative process provide the artist with a new color for every day and a new melody for every night. Most of the time it is hard to separate the joy from sadness and the hope from despair. 

I worked on this album for the past 18 months and I have never made something that is such a concrete manifestation of my state of mind and a portrayal of my way of life. And while this is my darkest album since ‚Sondersensor‘, I also wanted it to be accessible and easy to dance to. This is a portrait of the artist as a young man and the backdrop is the urban dreamscape of a city that is eerily similar to the one I live in. The sound is dirty, urban and melancholic – the beats are simple and the textures are rich. In a way, this is the album I have always wanted to make. A culmination of the intensities and moods of the past two years. These moods will never disappear from my music but here they distilled to their clearest expression yet.
