It's been long over due but we were finally able to get Carmack one on one. He is definitely one of the most forward thinking artists of the new generation. If you produce then there is a good chance that you know who Carmack is. He has inspired many all over the world and has pretty much created his own genre of sound. How many times have you heard another producer make a beat similar to his and say to yourself, "CARMACK"!?

This guy has been a big part of Soulection's growth and history and it felt good to finally sit down with my bro to talk about his growth and current inspirations. We talked about how his move to L.A. changed his life, how he feels about other producers who create music that sounds like his, his relationship with drugs and why he calls his music drugs, when we can expect the next album, and much more.

Frankfurt-based DJ and producer Phillip Lauer (now known as Lauer) has been a regular feature in the city's club narrative since before the turn of the millennium. It was around this time he made forays into Deep House, having started out passionately devoted to Hip-Hop and Punk. His first work was released as Plenty Ammo on Inbetween Records and on London House label Real Soon, with Lauer later establishing his own imprint Brontosaurus in 2006 as an outlet for his more esoteric work, as well as that of his friends.

It wasn't until 2012 he made the switch to his own name, releasing 'Phillips' on Gerd Janson's beloved Running Back label to critical acclaim (Lauer is also a member of production duo Tuff City Kids alongside Janson). He followed it up with another brilliant album in May of this year - 'Borndom' via another lauded dance music institution in Munich's Permanent Vacation records. The 13 tracks were a dazzling display of Lauer's refined approach to melody and versatile club sounds - a marriage of the rawness of his early Punk influences and the heavy groove of his Deep House experiments. A range of different styles seamlessly appeared alongside each other including Ambient, Electro, New Wave and Acid House - fortifying his reputation as an artist that eschews any expected genre identity.

We've got him on Hyp mix duty this week for a hefty selection of peak time rollers. With no drums for the first five minutes, this mix steadily evolves from suspenseful atmospherics to understated beats to full on club bangers. Go on, dive in...

Containing five synthesiser-led pieces, ‘Loon’ was recorded in autumn 2014 across five days at Nils’s Durton Studio in Berlin, and continues on from the ambient sounds of ‘Stare’ but with the addition of more percussive elements and dub influences. For this new EP the duo wired an Oberheim 4 Voice and a Korg PS3100 to the mixing desk and performed live takes on both instruments. With all four hands on its pots, all mixes were recorded straight onto 2-track ½-inch tape.

Like on ‘Stare’, their first collaborative affair in 2012, they simply followed what was laying in front of them, and this time they were driven by some new synths, a kick drum and tape effects. Indulging in dub, the tracks where all performed rather than engineered, with Ólafur riding a few elements on faders and Nils bringing effects in and out. After running several mixes, they went for the five strongest moments from this session. The release was announced on a joint website www.arnaldsfrahm.com together with the launch of an intimate 45-minute studio film titled ‘Trance Frendz’, featuring another seven improvisations.

“When I was young I was smuggled to Goa parties by my brother. The music played there in the late nineties had a somewhat deep effect on me. ‘Loon’ is almost a blurry memory of these times.
