Over here at Love Bang, in Shanghai's 100-degree heat, we're about to throw a pool party. Actually we're having several pool parties, starting this Sunday at a mystery location in central Shanghai.  

SUNDAY. JULY 28, 2013. 

We got an outdoor pool, four or five DJs, a rough fellow manning the BBQ, some massage girls, plenty of beer and gin, a little lotion, and a lot of dancehall, hip hop, and house. It's going down Sunday, July 28 from 12 noon until 8:30PM, then again on Saturday, August 3rd - same time. 

To get in the mood for the party, I recorded this mix out on the deck live in one-take with two CDJ-800s, a DJM-400, and Serato, then added a bit of magic on my personal computer. It's mostly hip hop, dancehall, and G-funk - just the kind of music I want to hear at a pool party.

Tread The Water

Back in the summer of 2009, I was asked by my friend Brian Delaney to contribute the backing vocals to his cover of Queen's 1975 space-folk classic '39. A Night at the Opera is one of my all time favorite albums and I jumped at the chance to deconstruct Brian May's heartfelt song about space travel, relativity, and colonizing distant planets. I listened Queen's version over and over trying to pick out all the intricate harmonies and feel like I got pretty close. I wasn't able to nail Roger Taylor's insane soprano part in the middle section, but as far as I can tell, the rest of the parts are fairly accurate to the original backing tracks. I'm pretty sure Brian Delaney's album has been shelved and this cover was never finished. I recently came across my backing tracks on an old hard drive and stitched together this a cappella mix as an entertaining curiosity. I hope Brian manages to complete his final mix someday as his guitar work was really fantastic, as was the lead vocal by Jack Spack Jr. Any time I can be involved in something related to Queen, I'm in. I've loved this band since I was a kid. -TM
