In just a short space of time and with but a few releases, Berlin based Brit Jay Donaldson has carved out his own house style. Referencing old school Chicago nostalgia whilst coming laden with analogue textures and jacked up beats, his sounds have come in the form of a couple of EPs on Lobster Theremin and are soon to be released on a debut EP for Dekmantel (out on March 16). His In Gold EP features three more spiritual house cuts with crisp percussion and elastic basslines, cosmic synths and heartfelt pads that have real purpose. Ahead of that, though, he serves up the next instalment in our podcast series. 

Starting with some deep, melodic house music the mix then smoothly transitions through some tropical sounding beats and painfully emotive vocal grooves that being to pick up the pace.  Classics like No Smoke’s 1989 cut ‘Koro Koro’ then proves Palms Trax digs deep for his musical nuggets as he journeys through hip house, Latin inflected broken beat and more experimental and harder hitting fare in the final section. The style is considered and cerebral, the music is lush and evocative and the selections are brave and fresh. As such, this is a subtly stirring mix that will awaken your week in the nicest of ways.

Christmas is here! We hope you have a lovely one and, to help make it a musically memorable time, we’re playing Santa and will be delivering a couple of extra special mixes today and next week. Ben UFO is someone very close to everything we do here at Dekmantel. His taste is broad and well informed, and his rare skill in the DJ booth is matched only by his endless quest for exciting new sounds to play. In that regard he embodies our outlook perfectly: he is someone who unearths a previously unknown gem as often as he breaks a red hot new record. His sets have been a key feature of Dekmantel parties around the world and, for us, he is one of the very best DJs out there. 

In basic terms, this is a deep mid-tempo house and techno mix. But the reality is that it unfolds with such an intriguing narrative that it feels like so much more. The mixing is so smooth you barely notice where one track ends and another starts. Instead, without realising, you find the atmosphere constantly changes, taking you from sci-fi machine grooves to muggy bumping techno, from celestial and hallucanogenic synth lines to creepy meandering riffs that encourage you to follow them into the unknown. It’s a mix that places you at the heart of a smoky dance floor, but is one that offers as much of a cerebral thrill as a visceral one. What’s more, it somehow feels like only half of the story.

Berlin-based producer @moomin's third album 'Yesterday's Tomorrows' came out earlier this year via Wolf Music, and in something of a new direction, it found him incorporating his love for hip-hop, jungle, funk and breaks into his usual sample-led deep house sound.

We're very happy to welcome Moomin on board to our Ransom Note mix series, especially as this instalment finds him digging deep and exploring the hip-hop section of his record collection.

London-based Soraya Brouwer is someone completely immersed in the world of music. Founder of beloved pink-tinged music site Truants, Soraya operates as editorial director there, while also working in artist relations at Native Instruments. She’s long been pursuing music as a side-hustle, though, working in nightclubs at university before founding the non-profit Truants platform, which recently launched its own Patreon campaign. Soraya first learnt to DJ in high school in her dad’s attic, and her Dummy Mix reflects someone with such a long-running passion for exciting music, with a set that’s vibrant, warm and – let’s be honest – banging. It was created while she self-isolated due to the current Covid-19 pandemic. “I recorded this mix in my bedroom on a Sunday afternoon, with my roommate dancing along,” Soraya says. “We’ve been inside for two weeks, and London has been under lockdown for one. “I think our restlessness is definitely reflected in the mix selection – it’s definitely a lot darker and more uptempo from the get-go than my recent sets. A lot of these tracks are the ones that I’ve been drawing for recently to distract myself from the uncertainty and chaos around us, and I hope it can provide those listening to it with a bit of relief too.”
