Ah, Fall. Crisp air, football, and standing in line at the show shivering your ass off. For me it’s a time to genre shift. I lose my interest in the sun drenched party tracks and lens flared out indie anthems and move into a darker place, a more familiar place.  For the past year or so I have been reveling in the shadowy, subtly electric, mood bending music of Post-Dubstep. From the defining minds of James Blake, Mount Kimbie, and Jamie XX (my god does that kid get it) to the pulsating experimental bass lines in more popular music today. This mix is fueled by how Post-Dubstep captures fall ambiance. Sleazy and slightly angry. The shiny days of summer are coming to an end this mix is getting me ready for the more intense feelings of winter. Feelings of solitude bordering on loneliness. Feelings of warm bodies to help stave off the chill in your bed. Feelings of beanies, parkas, and boots. Feelings of cold ears, hot drinks, and hotter nights. Come winter, let’s play. 

We start out with some tracks heavy with emotion and ambient feel. Notably, the mind blowing project by YoursTruly, “Songs From Scratch” featuring Nosaj Thing and Chance the Rapper painting a melancholy picture of growing up in the ghetto.

“They murking kids, they murder kids here
Why you think they don’t talk about it?
They deserted us here
Where the fuck is Matt Lauer
Somebody get Katie Couric in here
Prolly scared all the refugees away
 like we had a fucking hurricane in here”

The juxtaposition of the floating ambient synths with the smoothly dark lyrics is simply stunning.

Next is Shlomo, the remixer, producer, label starting wiz-kid hailing from L.A.. I love how he brings stretched out brooding beat production against the dirty shine that is Los Angeles. Notably remixing such artists as Jeremih, Drake, LOL Boys, How To Dress Well, Little Dragon and more. Keep on eye on this prodigy.

The Mix darkens and picks up at the same time highlighting a trend I am eternally thankful for, “mainstream” hip-hop takes a dive back into the black street lyricism of the 90’s. Odd Future’s Earl Sweatshirt. Reminding me of the irreverent insanity of Wu-Tang spinoff’s “The Grave Diggaz” and that rainy, east coast, depressed nihilism. Earl Sweatshirt is highlighting hip-hop that's creative and lyrics driven. Again, interesting to hear the grime of another L.A. artist.

“From a city that's recession-hit
With stress niggas could flex metal with,
peddle to rake pennies in.
Desolate testaments trying to stay Jekyll-ish”

Speaking of nihilism, just follow the unstoppable force that has become Danny Brown. Wow.

Pulling out of hip-hop we move into a remix of the strange Austrian M.I.A. likened DENA. Keep on eye on her. I forecast either a flop if she stays with her almost comical style or a blow up if she starts pushing and unveiling the angst of Central European youth during their unprecedented economic crisis.

The mix wraps up with the very few indie-ish tracks that appealed to me over the past few months. I personally feel that indi/folk/pop/self-produced scene is a mess. Grow a beard, play some painful acoustic or put some nonchalant party lifestyle lyrics over bright poppy synth, guitar hooks,  and gobble up the unapologetically mainstream “underground” scene. Bleh.

Thankfully there are still diamonds to find. Check out the strange yet brilliant Majical Cloudz, created by Devon Welsh, son of Kenneth Welsh who played the iconic Windom Earle on “Twin Peaks”.

Finally, wrap up with the frightening and hoarse story of hostage taking and death told by the still relatively unknown “Gambles”.

His dark moves are nothing

Wherever I stand, I tremble”

A hypnotizing blend of sound that reminds me of Dylan, The Mountain Goats, and somehow, The Black Heart Procession.

I have always been a massive fan of Roy Ayers so was excited to work on this.
Kan is a pianist and instrumentalist from Japan and this release also features versions from Grey Area, Luvless and Left Side Wobble.
