Since Amani Friend (of Desert Dwellers, Liquid Bloom) met Alex DeYoung in 1995, the duo has experienced many forms of electronic music. As the scene has shifted and evolved, the two producer's paths have ebbed and flowed in and out of each other's lives. After a long hiatus, Variant Field have come to Gravitas Recordings for their first EP in over a decade, Immeasurable. Represented via three original tracks, two edits, and remixes by Lil Fish and DISSØLV, Immeasurable evokes a timeless space, a portal beyond the edge of genres and boxes. Immeasurable nods to several nodes along the electronic music spectrum the two have experienced since the mid '90s, while bringing the music into modern bass realms. Through this, Variant Field has successfully masterminded an emotive, cinematic piece of work that is in perpetual flux.
 
In winter, a mysterious "Silhouette" stands tall in front of the dark gateway, welcoming listeners as she ushers them through the arch. Rewinding time, autumn re-emerges and courages "Letting Go" through hypnotic, melodic beats. "Immeasurable" is an explorative odyssey that floats through a tranquil nebula. Contributing their own creations of the title track, Lil Fish incorporates hypnotic chants and ethereal world influence that precedes wobbly bass energy, while DISSØLV adds dominant yet quivery basslines to the ether. Fast forwarding to spring, "Letting Go" further propels the enchanting, tribal excursion. Coming full circle in summer, "Silhouette" is a darker, more modern IDM offering that pulls listeners back through the gateway and shuts the portal.

With a sound and style that begets immediate recognition, Primate originally emerged with a design palette that felt honed in beyond its years, presenting a catalog of exceptionally avant-garde electronic music right out of the gate. As such, we’ve proudly hosted his work on numerous occasions, and are just as excited to debut his latest experiments on the Tortuous EP.

The absolute first hallmark of any Primate production is his bombastic percussive arrangement; be it rising swells, crashing climaxes, or veritable rhythmic bridges, his drum shaping and programming across the entire EP is both on par with his sonic aesthetic and a step above previous releases. The liquid-soul underbelly of each track acts as an anchor for daring runs of low-end synthesis, mingling the playbook of improvisational jazz with his own brand of space-aged synthesis. It’s a masterclass in phrasing, pacing, and evolution across compositions, bringing breaks, glitch, and instrumental dialogue to the same table. For music minds of all shapes and sizes, Primate’s Tortuous should be next on your list of must-have records.

Wave Track #7 comes to us from St Celfer, a Korean-American sound artist and musician who splits his time between Sao Paulo and Seattle. His track, Fifty One, wastes no time announcing itself, beginning with a sequence of machine-like, harsh sounds that rise in volume before slowly giving way to a melancholic rhythm, interspersed with soft tones that combine to create a nostalgic, almost cinematic quality. In just under three minutes, St Celfer manages to elicit a strong yearning for elsewhere, a sensibility that encapsulates–and communicates with–the other works presented in Infrasonica’s Wave #7. Bursting onto the scene with an appetite for the psychedelic, Alien Speak is the stellar first release from Sylph, the musical alias of Emily Thaler. Based out of New York City, she has spent the last several years quietly expanding upon her production, composition, and engineering knowledge. The producer’s patience has paid off with a musical bounty worth it's weight in sub bass. Drawing from the font of psybient influence, each of the four tracks is a boisterous dance of pulsating frequencies. Glitchy harmonies and high-processed synthesis turn each moment into a downtempo tango between the visceral and the effervescent. With an obvious inclination towards arrangement and general musicality, the EP is a testament to an intrepid work ethic. For fans of pronounced sound design and glitched-out serenades, Alien Speak should feel right at home in your catalog.

Deep, tight kicks & multi-layered bass lines that seem to move every molecule around you into complex patterns. Squishy, yet fuzzy atmospheres with sounds that pan around your head as if in the 4th dimension. However a piece of humanity shows itself within, with some eastern vocals that seem to invoke a more ancient feeling - these new/old school breakbeat styled tracks give you the feeling of what it would be like to be some sort of hyper-advanced robot break dancer.
