to the 2 people reading this, here's a rant:

Hey! It's been a few months since i've uploaded anything here that is a solo project, and since the school year is starting up again I'm predicting that my focus is maybe going to shift to a different creative mindset, away from collaboration.

Of course i've got a lot of collaborative projects in the works with people who are all awesome, but I also want to keep developing my own personal compositional style. This in some part requires me to make musical decisions without the assistance of stimuli created by a collaborator.

The reason I'm uploading this 24 second clip is to motivate myself into finishing some solo tracks that I hope to lump together into a release. I haven't thought much about the scale of the project yet, but I'm predicting that it's not going to be an album, and will have at least 2 tracks. I'm gonna try not to do much 'dance music' or 'bass music' focused stuff because even though I enjoy that, I'm gonna try to reserve those skills for collaboration (notably with boxkitty, who if you're actually reading this you've probably heard of or at least seen on twitter a few times). 

My initial, undeveloped concept for the release is likely going to revolve about the recreation or resynthesis of entirely organic things using technology. I'm not really talking about physical modelling here (i'll talk about that in a sec), by the way. I'm talking about the raw concept of humans attempting to mimic organic occurrences, processes, environments, movements, structures, etc. using strictly inorganic, man-made tools and mediums.

This concept mainly grew from the fact that I've been extremely interested in DSP recently, especially within the field of physical modelling. I've been reading a lot of academic sources (JOS, my beloved) concerning physical modelling stuff and it's astounding how much you can do with such simple low-level concepts. To be clear, I am a tiny little baby when it comes to anything computer science oriented, but there's just something about DSP and physical modelling that compels me. I recently bought the full version of max MSP, and have been using gen to build some very basic models. I've build a model with two tubes diffusing into each other, a model for a flat plate, and a model for a human vocal tract. I've specifically used the tube and plate models as musical resonators (very similar to the ableton stock device). 
Aside from DSP that i've built, I've been using a lot of other synths to produce organic sounds. I've discovered unique ways to use use additive and modal synthesis (mainly in melda) to create organic sounding resonators, and various effects such as vocoders to create textures that at surface value sound like that could have originated from an organic source. 

another motive for this project is my college applications. I'm going to be applying to electronic music programs around the United States, and for a lot of them I'm required to submit a portfolio of my compositions along with my transcript and essay and all that. I've been lucky enough to have had the opportunity to have conversations with the faculty in the electronic music departments of a couple of the places I'm applying to, and they've said that I should aim to avoid "beat oriented" music, and not show collaborative work as a primary thing. 

So if I finish this project in time for my college portfolio, it could not only serve as a way for me to experiment musically with physical modelling DSP and as a way for me to develop my skills outside of a collaborative context, but also as something for people involved with more "academic" music to listen to that they don't immediately lump in with EDM.
