The Gymnopédies, published in Paris starting in 1888, are three piano compositions written by French composer and pianist Erik Satie.

The melodies of the pieces use deliberate, but mild, dissonances against the harmony, producing a piquant, melancholy effect that matches the performance instructions, which are to play each piece "painfully", "sadly" or "gravely".

Svitlana Nianio and Oleksandr Yurchenko are musicians with a long history in the still-mysterious Kiev Underground. Nianio’s first group Cukor Bela Smert [Sugar, The White Death] were active from the late 80’s through to the early 90’s, and following an intense period of touring, collaboration, experimentation and a string of mixtapes and self-published recordings, Nianio’s first official solo album ‘Kytytsi’ was released in 1999 by Poland’s Koka Records. Oleksandr Yurchenko, a longtime collaborator and a pivotal figure in the Kiev music scene, was instrumental in creating the Novaya Scena, a loose conglomerate of artists who encouraged each other to excavate both the sounds of the West and Ukrainian tradition. ‘Znayesh Yak? Rozkazhy’ (‘Know How? Tell Me’) is the duo’s most fully realised collaboration, an enchanting, complete world in which Yurchenko’s instrumentation and playfulness with form frames Nianio’s otherworldly soprano, recalling Liz Fraser steeped in contrapuntal melody and hymnal improvisation. Originally made available on a self-released cassette in 1996 (re-issued in 2017 by Ukraine’s Delta Shock label) where the album was twinned with ‘Lisova Kolekciya’ (re-issued on LP in 2017 by Skire) this is the debut release of ‘Znayesh Yak? Rozkazhy’ outside of Ukraine.

Recorded in an abandoned park in Kiev during a fertile period for artists and musicians following the collapse of the Soviet Union, ‘Znayesh Yak? Rozkazhy’ sees Nianio and Yurchenko combine Casio keyboard, hammered dulcimer, percussion, and Nianio’s unmistakeable soprano vocalisations to create music sympathetic to the specific locations in which they chose to record. Yurchenko’s contribution is perhaps more present on this recording than anything else we have heard from the duo. His percussive dulcimer playing provides the basis on which Nianio can weave delicate keyboard lines while playfully contorting her voice, shifting from a low register reminiscent of Nico to what could be perceived as the call of a bird or an animal in distress. Whatever the intent, the effect is haunting and beautiful in equal measure.

There’s a prevailing earthiness on the recordings, found in the warm hiss of the lo-fi means of recording or the grinding, unspecified sounds that occasionally accompany the melody, like drones created on the fly by hands trying to keep warm in the ice. A prevailing mood of fragility and beauty seeps from these melodies, delicate moments of clarity spun by the two musicians. ‘Znayesh Yak? Rozkazhy’ is a dream spun in twilight, a crystalline, private world where the listener feels both alien and welcome.

The brothers Samu and Ville Kuukka from Helsinki, Finland, making music together since they were teenagers, and trying their hand at many styles, came upon a unique sound in 2004 and thus were born The Gentleman Losers (https://soundcloud.com/the-gentleman-losers). Their mix of ambient aesthetics, lo-fi-but-hi-fi production, post-rock leanings, a hint of Americana, and a dark undercurrent, has earned them a cult following – which is way cooler than being a stupid lame-o big name and selling lots of records and tickets and t-shirts and stickers.

Deep Breakfast 068 - Hipnotic Earth

The trilogy of Seasons/Wanderings/Landscapes inevitably comes to an end. The openness of this new album in relation to the landscapes around is at the same time a process of letting go and opening up to new things. There are of course melancholy moods and memories that can be found again in the album, but it is not dominated by it and everything is more natural without losing the impressions of depth and the different levels of nature as we normally portray them. The journey begins with the path into the depths of nature, and only the sky is the limit. As far as the eye can see, as far as the feet can carry, a stroll through mountains and valleys, through enchanted forests and overgrown gardens, across fields and meadows, along a lake in the morning all the way back into the forest at night and the distant impressions of the village.As before, this album is supported by our good friends and remix mates Xoki & Hieronymus, who, like Coppice Halifax, have written great new versions of our pieces. We are also very happy to welcome the very talented music artist Submersion as a new guest contributor to our label, whose hypnotic works are also unparalleled in the scene.

The plot of these three albums, which was also strongly characterized by retrospectives and childhood memories of certain places in a narrower context, will flow seamlessly into broader ideas and approaches in the future, which will also grow with the age of our Forest Roots label. With the end of this album, Nemo & Jaymon set out on new areas to explore. In the future there will be one or the other review in the form of a small release, but there are also other albums pending that are just waiting to see the light of day.
