The latest Faint Waves outing is comprised of house pianos, club organs, D-50 synth flourishes, and deep drums.

An exercise in marrying FW’s usual brand of downtempo with more muscular dance grooves, the resulting tracks are “Sparkling Sands” and “Beachside Resort”. Sparkling Sands is a downtempo disco tune with a contemplative, mystical undertone, shades of exotica revealing themselves. Beachside Resort might chart a similar course, but it finds itself the mellower of the two songs, with a tropical and uplifting vibe.

Together, these tracks feel like the escapism that’s so typical of Faint Waves music, albeit with the added benefit of being disco and house influenced. That fact alone elevates the material, brightening it up, changing the pace — even when the actual pace has hardly changed. Meanwhile, the remixes further the escapist theme, being more jazz and lounge inspired. Sparkling Sands is simple, a feel-good single that aims to bring you back to the beach, evoking images of evening gatherings and poolside retreats with its sonic whimsy.
