Step 1: Think of some musical idea you’ve been putting off doing all year. It could be a riff, a new approach to an instrument you use, reworking an existing track. Whatever’s been on your mind.

Step 2: Stop procrastinating and do the thing you focused on in Step 1 above. Record a track that exemplifies the thing from Step 1.

Disquiet Junto Project 0520: On the Clock

For @disquiet junto project 520, 17th Dec 2021: On The Clock, Stop procrastinating ...

This is a nice "end of the year" project. I spent 2 hours this Friday morning working on this 18 years old track.
It started as a slow jam with my friend  Ringo Estrella playing drums, I was playing upright bass.
It was a pointless jam, but I liked the groove, so I kept it aside for further use.
5 years later  I went back to it and added acoustic guitar to make something out of it (mimicking a bass lick to create a sort of hook) It was still pointless so I shelved again.
3 years later I need a slow groove for a project, considered this one and added a Hammond organ to glue it together. Still didn't work but kept it aside promising to finish that later.
Fats forward 5 years and I fulfilled my promise , went back to it, recorded some melodies on my accordina...and then did nothing with it, didn't mix it, nothing.
This morning, another 5 years later, inspired by this project I decided to just mix it and share it, as pointless as it is, just to get rid of it...

I have a collection of audio odds and ends stored on my laptop. The files are comprised of field recordings, instrument recordings, unfinished modular synth and Ableton Live noodlings.  I took two of the more recent experimental sketches that were created in Ableton Live and combined them the best I could, adjusting the pitch as needed. I added an additional track that has heavily processed sliced bits from one of the recordings to try to create more depth to the piece.

After a long hiatus, a new track for @disquiet. Glad to be back!
Stitched together from a couple of unfinished pieces of the recent and not-so-recent past, amongst them bits of an Ae-ish pad/beat, a clicks-and-cuts w.i.p. with a rejected Fender Jazz Bass B-line, various bits and bobs that I abandoned fairly soon after starting them. Basically, improvising with leftover bits, which is how most encym tracks tend to happen anyway. 
So big thanks to Mark for this just-my-cup-of-tea assignment.

I chose 2 recent unfinished tracks, that I had considered layering prior to the disquiet prompt… so I did just that, I set up 2 channels one for each track, one slowed by 10% to roughly match the longer track, I simply adjusted levels for each and had a shared bus channel with additional eq and reverb(s), this in turn joins the originals in the master, which also has some lofi fx and more(!) reverb… recorded the output. This was fun to do. Taking this week's @disquiet project of combining two works-in-progress, I have two strands of music I'm composing, to which I dedicate 10-20 minutes most days demoing impromptu ideas on Garageband. One has the broad title of "Disco for Post Punk Elderlies" and the other is  category is I'm writing a series of simple piano miniatures, the latter being usually no longer than just over two minutes.

Here I had two demo ideas that were from the same day and were very rough and unsatisfactory. The idea of combining them felt a novel way to take them into a different place. Although the "Disco" track was already at the slow pace (tempo being 66bpm) you hear here (it is dance music for post punk elderlies like myself after all...), I looped the initial tracks in Logic, changed the pitches of some of the bass and organ tracks and quantized all the tracks to git them together more coherently, and brush off the unconvincing dissonant sounds. The piano miniature was transformed by the Soft Metals preset and light touch delay was added to the 808 drum pattern.

This piece certainly isn't 'complete' in the sense of if I was to develop this further, but I really like how blending this mismatch creeated something very different from the original intentions of the seperate parts. Greater than the sum of, etc..

Actually, neither of these tracks are very recent.  One is pretty old.  But both were tracks that I've wanted to do something with for a while.  And they are pretty different from each other so they seemed like they would make a good challenge.  One, as you can hear is a developed groove that I could have made a traditional song out of (but honestly didn't feel like it and probably never would have), and the other is just a little drone thing on guitar, just 3 notes.  I started layering effects on the guitar drone, making a new track each time until I had a nice noisy mess.  Then went in reverse removing effects and that process makes up the second half of the track until you hear the uneffected guitar to finish off the track.



Oh yeah, and the title came from a recent dream I had about “a crazy band I used to listen to”

My 33 1/3 series book about the Aphex Twin album <i>Selected Ambient Works Volume II</i> was published in 2014. The book was one of the top 5 bestselling titles for the calendar year, and in 2015 was ranked by Pitchfork as one of the "33 best" of the 100-plus books in the 33 1/3 series. It has subsequently been translated into Japanese (2019) and Spanish (2018)

Since 2012 I have moderated the Disquiet Junto group, which began on SoundCloud. More at disquiet.com/junto. 

I've written for Nature, Pitchfork, The Wire, Down Beat, Boing Boing, NewMusicBox, Red Bull Music Academy, Art Practical, the website of The Atlantic, and many other publications. 

I've exhibited sound art at galleries in Los Angeles (Crewest), Manhattan (apex art), and Dubai (DUTAC), and I had a audio-visual installation at the San Jose Museum of Art as part of its 45th anniversary.

And since 1996 I've run the website Disquiet.com about the intersection of sound, art, and technology.

During the early 1990s I studied Mathematics and Computer Science. The world wide web was still largely text-based and mostly empty. Today things are obviously different, though I still thoroughly enjoy art, design, cinema and music in all its forms. I have traveled all over the world for nearly two decades, visiting just over 140 countries. Japan is my favorite. All of this I attempt to incorporate into my music and art.
