This was my contribution for part 4 of Disquiet Junto Project 0639: Path Ways (4 of 3)

Here’s a copy of my post on the Disquiet Junto 0639discussion thread:

There were so many excellent creations in the last round that I decided to try to incorporate all of them into one soundscape. I ended up downloading a total of 52 files (some weren’t downloadable or the files were removed), and placed them into separate tracks in Ableton Live. From there, edited down each audio file to 6 seconds, close to the middle as possible, and aligned the clips one after the other. Valhalla Reverb and Delay were added to the Sends channel for all the tracks. The last :45 seconds includes three consecutive audio files of all 52 tracks compressed three times to :20, :14 and :11 seconds. Phonolyth Cascade Reverb and additional Valhalla Reverb were to this track. A field recording by Sugai Ken of ambient sounds from a Japanese shopping mall was layered in to act as a connecting foundation for all the tracks. The mall recording is from a free Ableton Live sample pack.

Apologies to the creators for chopping up, adding affects, and using just a few seconds of their creations for this soundscape. I suppose it could be considered an aural encapsulation of the past few weeks. I had a good time participating, hopefully all of you did as well.

I used two duets from the Disquiet Junto 637 project (see below): „Is still on the line“ by Andreas Kitzmann and 33per (https://soundcloud.com/33per/is-still-on-the-line-duet-with-andreas-kitzmann-disquiet0638) and „Take5“ by Actor Network and tunelight (https://soundcloud.com/tunelight/disquiet0637-2of3-take5-w-actor-network). So I ended up with four collaborators - thank you, Gentlemen! 

First step was Full Blotter, Giorgio Sanchristoforo’s new granulator, to get some pads from the material. Luckily the software treated the tracks as two mono lanes, so I ended up with four distinct pads. 

To get a pulse, I sped up the lovely clicky bassline from Take 5. EQ’ing and getting the levels right did take ages. 

Well, what else? Happy Easter, of course!

Step 1: In the previous project, we completed musical trios. Project 0638 was the third of three consecutive projects. In the first one, 0636, musicians recorded solos. In the second, 0637, musicians took those 0636 tracks, nudged them to the left side of the stereo spectrum, and then added their own music to the right, forming duets with a hole in the middle. In project 0638, other musicians introduced a third track down the center of the 0637 recordings, completing the trios. You can revisit the music via the blog posts disquiet.com/0636, disquiet.com/0637, and disquiet.com/0638, and you can follow the forking paths through the related Google Drive spreadsheet.

Step 2: The goal of this project is to rework the material that accumulated over the course of the previous three projects. There are two main ways to go about this. One is to simply choose one or more tracks and remix, combine, mash-up, or otherwise transform them. The other is to move on to Step 3.

Step 3: Choose one 0636 track, a solo, that yielded more than one 0638 trio. (These are highlighted in light blue, or maybe it’s teal, in the leftmost column of the spreadsheet.) Trace the various routes that 0636 track took. Perhaps it also led to some 0637 tracks that never went any further. Perhaps there are various 0638 versions based on varied 0637 versions. In any case, record a piece of music that lets the listener experience the branching paths that the original 0636 track took over the course of the three phases of the trios project sequence. Clearly you will be using a linear form to represent variations, so how to achieve that will require some compositional ingenuity. But you’re up to the task.

These instructions are fairly lengthy. Please read carefully. Originally this trios sequence of projects would have ended with the completion of the trios after three consecutive weeks. However, those went particularly well, so let’s see if we can push it a little further.

My second piece is a cross between points 2 and 3.
As a starting piece I chose the piece by encyn, a true gem of this compilation.
I recovered what was originally supposed to be my 637, then abandoned because the track had already been chosen. In this case without channel limitations.
Starting from this 636 I followed the family tree and chose some 637s and 638s to mix on the starting track.

[Disquiet0639remix] Path Ways

For Disquiet Junto 0639: The Assignment: Rework musical trios using the constituent parts — one of two ways. 
I did way number one: "choose one or more tracks and remix, combine, mash-up, or otherwise transform them."
Here's the result: a quick, fun plundering of songs from week 1 and 2 that were yellow cells on project spreadsheet (did not get used for subsequent week submissions). (With one exception it looks like, oops). 
Chopped up on the Push with Live's Simplr, tapped in some parts. Looped some segments. Kind of a cut and paste arrangement of my clips, and made some minor edits. Fun, quick and simple. 
This 4 part async collab sequence was once again a lot of fun. It was inspiring to hear everyone's work. I could do this all year long, and I hope we do it again here in the Junto later this year! Thanks everyone!

Plundered Yellow Cells [disquiet0639]

During the early 1990s I studied Mathematics and Computer Science. The world wide web was still largely text-based and mostly empty. Today things are obviously different, though I still thoroughly enjoy art, design, cinema and music in all its forms. I have traveled all over the world for nearly two decades, visiting just over 140 countries. Japan is my favorite. All of this I attempt to incorporate into my music and art.
