Kagami Smile is from an industrial city a few hours from Chicago and spends some of his time in the futuristic sprawl of Shenzhen, China. He takes influence from shoegaze records as well as minimal techno labels such as Chain Reaction and Modern Love. His most recent output of music focuses on minimal meditative synthwork reminiscent of early Aphex Twin and strong nods to Japanese video game soundtracks as well as the concept of liminal spaces. His music reflects a series of recurring dreams had since 2017, that of a missed moment with a stranger. His compositions are usually filled with nostalgia and romance as well as a haze of urban solitude. He has released on labels such as Dream Catalogue, Tekres, SOVN, Gin&Platonic, as well as an upcoming album on Opal Tapes and Sores (Sound+Matter) from Sweden. He will also release an album on Shimmering Moods this year.

The Meditations various artists compilation continues its exploration into sounds with exclusive tracks for this compilation series.

Ian M Hazeldine records under the alias Antonymes, hailing from Hawarden, a small village in North Wales, whose most famous inhabitant was William Ewart Gladstone. He creates atmospheric melodies, using various pianos, celesta, strings, church organ and field recordings, and has had releases on Soundcolours, Cathedral Transmissions, Hidden Shoal, Time Released Sound and Rural Colours.

With a long standing interest in music making and active listening, Hazeldine works with any influences, from his surrounding landscape to the artists he has worked with. His compositions often take on a semi-improvised structure with accidental atmospheres used as a starting point. As well as his own projects, Hazeldine also works with Marconi Union's Richard Talbot, under the name Prospector. He also works as a graphic designer, film maker and photographer, having art directed many of the Hibernate releases including our critically acclaimed vinyl series, and has worked with many other artists and labels including Facture, Field Rotation and Olan Mill.

In late 2009 Antonymes released 'Beauty Becomes the Enemy of the Future' on Cathedral Transmissions of which the CD is now unavailable. Since then he has revisited the album, which has culminated a new release, 'There Can Be No True Beauty Without Decay'. Hazeldine's own reworkings are intertwined with those of friends Ian Hawgood, Isnaj Dui, Offthesky, Field Rotation, Wil Bolton, Spheruleus and James Banbury to create an album of captivating melancholy and beauty. The guest reworkings venture into other, darker territories, where one might be harder pressed to identify the original material.

The sleeve features beautiful images of the North Wales landscape by Richard Outram, fitting the music perfectly.

"SESTRO" is a compilation of electronic music from the Odesa-based label система | system, designed to bring together musicians from Ukraine who have been released on our label and performed at events we have organized. For many years we strive to cover a wide, diverse, and adventurous spectrum of Ukrainian music. The goal of the compilation is to directly financially support (ГО Сфера) Sphere (@womenspheresolidarity) which is a Kharkiv-based organization that actively helps women and LGBT+ people from eastern Ukraine in territories that are heavily affected by war. CS Sphere (ГО Сфера) supplies crisis kits for women in frontline areas and also provides financial assistance to vulnerable groups of women, organizes legal and medical consultations, provides psychological assistance, informational campaigns, and activist events.

"We have never had an experience of working with women in conditions of stress, shock, and grief like today. Now we are trying to gather our experience and the experience of our colleagues from other countries to help deal with the terrible consequences of the survivors" - Anna Sharygina, a representative of CS Sphere (ГО Сфера).

We believe that giving visibility to Ukrainian culture is an important part of our struggle, because Russia's war against Ukraine is imperialistic in nature, and for three centuries the works of Ukrainian authors have been denied and destroyed.
We will never agree to be dominated. We want, as artists, to give all possible support through our work to the brave volunteers now active in Ukraine, who are bravely fighting to save the most vulnerable.

It seems like all the versions of this song are shitty quality; so I decided to re-make it using the original sample from the Michal Urbaniak song "A Day in the Park".

It gave me some wonderful insight into Madlib's sampling techniques and composition flow. Also, I didn't just take the sample and chop it up. I wanted to be as true to the mix as possible. That involved using a vintage compressor plugin for the warmth, EQ tweaking for that aged effect, some crackle and machine hiss, as well as erosion on the highs. I'm pretty happy how it turned out.

Lost in a Sea of Trees tells the tale of a lone traveller who enters a dark, ancient forest. Lured deep into the woods by something not of this world as he enters uncharted grounds. Step by step his journey is getting darker as he encounters strange phenomena and beings among the trees.

‘Black Box Animals’ is the debut release from the Italian duo, Luton, formed in 2017 by Roberto P. Siguera and Attilio Novellino. The album is a textural feast of classically composed phrasing and heavily tar-coated mechanics. Crawling abstract electronic structures meld seamlessly into a wide array of electro-acoustics, built upon a fine edge that is focused on mood as much as melody. With each piece Luton deliver their own curious venom, striving for contrast, never settling into a predetermined genre. 

Contradiction permeates ‘Black Box Animals.’ Caution and weariness are etched into its themes. Luton feeds this uncertainty with its ability to create deeply affecting landscapes, as isolated and claustrophobic as they are warm and disarming. Within these dim seductions, a perplexing balance resides, something so familiar and primal, yet in the same breath so foreign and cryptic.  In truth, the more human, acoustic aspects of Luton’s sound are so tightly woven to that of the machine, one would be hard pressed to find any edges at all.

‘Black Box Animals’ was recorded around Europe with Luton Sinfonietta Orchestra, during several sessions of improvisation and post production in Stockholm, Manchester, Munich and Turin. In addition to the orchestral scores, written by Rob, both musicians played various other instruments including classical guitar, ancient Russian zither, piano, electric bass and guitars, e-bow, pedals and electronics. All tracks were finalized by Attilio in order to find their otherworldly magic.

The album shares some of the moodiness and frantic delivery of Deaf Center or even Ben Frost’s works for film.  Elsewhere, the intense drive and alchemic meld of electro-acoustic elements recall the likes of Rafael Anton Irisarri or Tim Hecker. While Luton find commonalities with these well-known masters, ‘Black Box Animals’ makes an impression all its own, creating an array of complex emotions, leaving us feeling a bit dirty, humbled, inexplicably at ease, perhaps off guard just enough to reshape our damaged conscious into a form of its own likeness.

Robin Schlochtermeier is an Anglo-German composer who has written the music for several award-winning broadcast documentaries and features. Classically trained, his music often combines organic sound design elements (and occasionally synthesis) with more traditional instrumentation (piano, orchestra).

Most recently Robin composed the music for 'The Spy Who Fell to Earth', an international espionage documentary which was released on Netflix worldwide in 2019. Robin, among others, also scored 'Virgin Queen's Fatal Affair' (Best Specialist Factual - Royal Television Society Awards), the features 'Queens of Syria' (Black Pearl Award - Abu Dhabi Film Festival), 'Retreat' (Premiere at Screenplay Shetland Festival, curated by UK film critic Mark Kermode), 'Oh No, Not Rudy Again!' (Cannes film festival 2015), and 'Strings' (British Independent Film Award).

"Spectral" is the first solo album of Robin Schlochtermeier. It's a set of slow, sometimes ambient pieces that function like distant echoes of childlike experiences of the natural and material world.

“My inspiration for the album is tied up in having become a father recently,” says composer Robin Schlochtermeier. ”As my daughter’s consciousness was forming I would often catch an amazed look on her face or notice that she stopped and stared at some small detail in her environment. This would frequently evoke a profound sense of mystery in me, and I grew curious as to what was causing her to react in such ways.”

The pieces on Spectral are attempts to capture some of this mysterious, nebulous spirit of bafflement and wonderment. “Seeing the world through my daughter’s eyes reminded me of the experiences the world can produce in our minds when we are open, receptive and boundary-less”, says Robin. “I started to wonder if I was half-remembering my own experiences of the world from when I hadn’t yet been trained to carve it up into neat concepts.” The result are pieces like “Lapping”, which in its slow, circular motion points to a rhythm of life unaffected by expectations of busyness, while rooted in a sense of grandeur and timeless wonder.

Spectral was recorded using a British upright piano from the 1950s with original worn strings, which are occasionally dampened with poster putty. The other elements are all forms of electronics and sound design, including a software synth (Retrologue) and custom programmed sounds generated from the composer’s bank of original sample recordings.

One of the aims for the album was to explore a limited palette of sounds. Some pieces only contain 3 layers of sound, while some are a little more complex. “The intention was to create space and openness in the arrangements”, according to Robin. “This principle also led me to explore longer and longer forms. As I went on I felt increasingly drawn to longer emotional arcs, resulting finally in Sonnenstaub."
