Much like New Zealand around the time Perverse (and their fellow countrymen) broke through, The Netherlands is producing some of the best dubstep musicians we’ve had the pleasure of working with recently. We’ve seen the likes of TMSV, Proxima, Icicle, The Illuminated and many, many more blow up over the last year or so - and we’re pretty sure our latest FKOFd artist will be included in this list if his recent material is anything to go by. 

“We’ve watched Dubbacle grow in both stature and skill throughout 2014, but his talent’s never been in doubt. With releases on Altered Records, Indigo Movement, MWM Recordings, Dubstep Rotterdam and Underslung Audio, the young producer’s making a name for himself as one of the Dutch bass musicians to look out for. And, if ‘FKOFd016’ is anything to go by, Dubbacle’s on a trajectory that’s rocketing skywards...

"Dubbacle’s ‘FKOFd016’ EP opens with ‘Jah Fire’, a haunting stepper that sweeps through with its relaxed flows and meandering synths. ‘Bezerk’ is a tune that stays true to its title, exploding with the drop as percussive hits and a wall of sub induce a fit of madness. ‘Control’ is the most laid back tune on the release; rolling atmospherics, crisp drums and a soothing sub. It’s definitely one of our favourite Dubbacle productions! The producer, as we’d hope he would, plants his flag firmly in the ground with the final inclusion on the release. ‘Restless’ asks more questions than it gives answers - an addictive track that’ll keep you coming back for more but never quite getting enough…”

Wolfsheim are a synthpop duo from Hamburg, Germany consisting of Markus Reinhardt (music) and Peter Heppner (lyrics and vocals). The band was founded in 1987 by Markus Reinhardt and Pompejo Ricciardi and was named after Meyer Wolfsheim, a fictional character from F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel ‘The Great Gatsby’.  Ricciardi soon left the band and was replaced by Peter Heppner, a childhood friend of Reinhardt's. Together they produced their first demo tape, “Ken Manage”, in 1988.

After making a second demo tape, “Any But Pretty”, in 1989, Wolfsheim applied at various labels until they caught the attention of independent record label Strange Ways Records. They are best known for their debut breakthrough single, "The Sparrows and the Nightingales”, the first single to be released on Strange Ways in 1991. The band's musical style takes cues from the 1980s New Romantics, new wave, synthpop, and darkwave. The track's sombre synths were produced by Carlos Peron of Yello. Reinhardt says the lyric was inspired by ‘The Great Gatsby’, "in the 'onomatopoeic tension' between predator and security."  Over six minutes, the narrator describes being lost, unsure of where his life is heading, using highly metaphorical language. On the flip is a brand new remix by German producer Ancient Methods, a pseudonym of Michael ‘Trias’ Wollenhaupt, who provides a driving, EBM-leaning, amphetamine-laced club ready cut.

All songs have been remastered for vinyl by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley. Designer Eloise Leigh has updated the record's original design with two sparrows
enclosed in a blood moon circle against a deep black purple backdrop. Each copy comes with a black and white photo postcard notes by Carlos Peron and the song's lyrics. This release comes in time to celebrate the single’s 25th anniversary.

Gilles Peterson-endorsed Bristolian, Typesun, makes his next chess move following on from a queue of primo productions over the last few years. "The PL", which featured the softly softly croons of an anonymous vocalist, was an undisputed 2013 jewel. "Water Song" was a swaddling pool of Latin loveliness; so good we had to take a dive ourselves. Now he's recruited MOBO-award winning jazz quartet Empirical’s Lewis Wright (vibraphone) and top guitar session player Miles James alongside a group of Bristol’s finest musicians for "Make It Right". Infused with smoke-tinted funk and pinned down by Typesun’s finely-honed production chops, it's the ideal mid-night foot-shifter.
