Fancy Human’s Leigh Morgan has been knocking around a while, running Urban Torque Recordings for the best part of a decade throughout the naughties. Having reached a satisfactory level of noodle shinnery on his baldy bonce, he has put down the scalp polish and finally started making music. Project Pickle is his second solo EP.

Project Pickle includes three original tracks, nailing his colours to the mast; Dilly of a Pickle begins with a clear indication of pickle preference, Pie on the Sly the accompanying dish, and Almost Champion a nod to the ultimate disappointment in food related release punnery.

We asked Chocky to come on board for remix duties, once he’d told us which was his favourite pickle, his answer we’ll take to our graves. Chocky has been winning plaudits for his deep dubby jazzy grooves through Artful Division, Nature Soul Music, Roots for Bloom and Audio Parallax etc, and here he’s on great form with, er, a deep dubby jazzy re-imaging, lovely stuff.

Fancy Human is the only known deep house label in East Dulwich. Peckham, it’s near neighbour may well be more highly celebrated with it’s thriving label, artist and record shop community, however, in East Dulwich you can get artisan sour dough bread for a fiver, so who’s the winner there then? I think you know the answer.

Leaving the ongoing feud with Peckham aside for the moment, next on Fancy Human we have ‘Nuggets Of Displeasure’, deeptrippinhypnohousin’ from our very own Leigh Morgan. Three cuts to warm the cockles of any artisan deep dough lover.

Juno: "Less than six months on from his last solo outing, Leigh Morgan returns to the Fancy Human label he co-founded back in 2015. The experienced producer seems to be getting better with age, and it's heartening to report that Nuggets of Displeasure is one of his strongest EPs to date. The title track sets the tone, with looped organ stabs and gorgeous piano flourishes sitting astride a fuzzy, saucer-eyed deep house groove. As the title suggests, the rolling "Cosmic Log" is a more spacey and heavily electronic affair, with Morgan smothering the undulating rhythm track in fluttering, off-kilter chords. Arguably best of all, though, is closer "Oddly Modern", a kind of tropical house/deep house fusion that comes complete with vintage tech-house touches and a melancholic melody line."

Fancy Human is having it’s most prolific year to date (assuming we get it together to release something else after this) notching up the tenth in our catalogue of reasonable deep doings. If nothing else, we haven’t contributed too much to the sea of white noise that is music these days. Prolific we ain’t.

The tag team back and forth between the label owners continues, handing back to Leigh Morgan who has crafted two originals. ‘Cherish My Spaces’ comes in vocal and instrumental form; deep chords, sparkly synth work, shimmery vocals and little injection of funk lickery, plus ‘I’m a Man With Hands’  trips it out in what we have decided is ‘hypno house’, it’s a thing.

As always, the man, the legend Atjazz is on mastering duties continuing his fine work on making us sound good.
