AXL vs System Overload -  Poeder in de Techno

Remember to keep your hands and arms inside the ride vehicle at all times!  

So, what was I going for with this track?  I think "What That Is" is a nod towards JG Thirlwell (Clint Ruin, etc.) and the aggressive kitchen sink produced by the variously named Foetus projects.  

I remember going to Innersleeve Records in Wausau, Wisconsin and picking up both OMD's "Crush" album AND Scraping Foetus Off The Wheel's "Hole" album (and I was lucky to get a copy that included the Bonus 12" with 5 more tracks, including the full length version of "Wash It All Off"--which is probably my favorite Foetus track of all time, if it isn't "Satan Place," which is on the actual Hole album.) 

The juxtoposition between the sensitive broken hearted synth pop of Crush and the indescribable madness of Hole was the perfect soundtrack to an insane summer for me.  

If you are not familiar with the ouevre of Foetus--imagine the WaxTrax singles that came out from the side projects of some of the biggest club/industrial bands of the 80s...and then give them every instrument ever made and a singer who is not limited in any way by the thought of commercial demands when crafting their lyrics.  

It is amazing--and, once again...I have to admit that this Interbay track doesn't come close to sounding like Foetus.  It sounds, as ever...like Interbay.  

This is the second Interbay track to sample this particular actor (bonus Interbay points if you can name the other track that does.  Unless, of course, you already feel like you have enough Interbay points...then...well...go about your day, I guess.)  

The tempo is cranked up.  The bassline is properly annoying--the sounds chosen, the repetitive pattern those sounds follow.  The synths and arps come screaming in without nuance.  Oh, and then there are power chords chunking things up.  

...all supported by a discussion of people trying to survive an avalanche.  

You know.  Pop music!  (Everybody talk about it!)  

And yet, I think it works!  (I may be the only one, but...has THAT ever stopped me before?)  

The project title, before I had more than a drum pattern and a synth sound...certainly before I chose the vocal samples, for this track was "Machines Against The Rage."  Kind of tells you where my head was at when coming up with this track, doesn't it?  (It's a good title--maybe I'll borrow that for some other Interbay track in the future.)  

Also, there are certain parts of this song where you'll hear what sounds like gang vocals--at first I thought they were shouting "Stanhope"--as in comedian Doug Stanhope"...but that didn't make much sense.  THEN, I heard it as "Stay At Home!," which would have made sense had this come out during the Covid lockdowns.  

Well, what's crazy is...there are no vocals saying either "Stanhope" or "Stay at Home"...there are no vocals other than the movie dialog snippets.  I went back to make sure when I listened to the master track--and it's a trick of how the bassline and drums happen to combine in what the human brain wants so desperately turn into a recognizable pattern/form.  

...and it kind of freaks me out a little bit.
