'It's strange, how the dances are changing' - Barrington Levy sang, referring to the new vibe that would slowly but surely replace the analogue sound with its digital counterpart. During the early to mid 80's, the music climate in Jamaica was in a state of constant flux. Studios were being updated and new producers were able to enter the scene, made possible in large by the new, more compact, studio setups and the decreasing need to hire live musicians. It was an exciting time and a very productive one - music was being released at an ever increasing pace and the sound was charged with anticipation and potency.

The CL-01 mix is centered around this period in time, just before the full reign of the computer when the Channel One studio was still the epicentre of Jamaican dancehall. It collects some of our favourite tunes from a collection of thousands of records, built over the last decade.

We hope that you will enjoy this mix as much as we did putting it together.

Super Cat (born William Anthony Maragh in Kingston, Jamaica, 25 June 1963)[1] is a deejay who achieved widespread popularity during the late 1980s and early 1990s dancehall movement. His nickname, "Wild Apache", was given to him by his mentor Early B.[1] He is the elder brother of reggae artist Junior Cat and is considered one of the greatest deejays within the Jamaican dance-hall scene to date

When you listen to a lot of Roots music you hear a lot of the messages expressed are about Rastafari, Marcus Garvey, life choices/styles, Babylon system, sufferation, prejudice, oppression and the like. It's a good thing, because it teaches us about survival, livity, culture and the experiences and struggle, primarily back when a lot of this music was recorded. The struggle stands out but there was a lot of love, vibes, happiness & joy included in the music.

So here comes a musical ting' called ‘Lovers Roots’. Spanning the years 1969-1984 this is a collection of sweet reggae music backed some heavy riddims with a lovers feel. Played in the dancehall or blues dances where you could 'rub up' on your partner and whisper sweet nothings. This is original Roots reggae music fi di lovers dem. Listen to it. It wicked.

The Hundreds San Francisco Celebrates Its 6th Year with a Hieroglyphics Collaboration Capsule and Mixtape

 In commemoration of The Hundreds San Francisco’s 6-year anniversary, The Hundreds reunites with Bay Area hip-hop legends Hieroglyphics for a limited run of three exclusive tees. These tees will be available only at the THSF and www.shophiero.com, starting at 11am, Thursday, March 20, 2014. On the evening of this date, The Hundreds will be hosting a one-night-only event celebrating the store’s anniversary at POST Street.  Exclusively for THSF’s anniversary, a POST X Hieroglyphics mixtape will be available for download on TheHundreds.com and www.hieroglyphics.com mixed by DJ ICEWATER.

 Bobby Hundreds grew up on the esteemed Bay Area collective’s music, and all of the tees include some of his favorite elements from the Hieroglyphics legacy. From a Souls of Mischief lyric from the renowned album 93 ‘til Infinity, to a spin on an OG Del Tha Funkee Homosapien tee that, according to urban hip-hop folklore, is based on a napkin self-portrait Del drew. The Hundreds is thrilled to unite again with the Hiero crew in commemoration of THSF’s 6th year running.

 The Hundreds “Del Face” T-shirt features Del Tha Funkee Homosapien’s iconic self-portrait illustration on the front and a reappropriated The Hundreds X Hieroglyphics bomb logo at the top back. The shirt will be available in three colors.

The “Emcees” tee is emblazoned with the Souls of Mischief lyrics “Emcees Should Know Their Limitations” from their legendary 93 ‘til Infinity album. The collaborative bomb logo will be at the top back with “Souls of Mischief” stamped under. The shirt will be available in three colors.
