"For "The Reformer Mix Vol. 1" we wanted to change it up a bit from our other mixes that are either straight forward, or live recorded in the club. We used two Technics 1200's and recorded a longer mix session, then edited everything down, mixed in live overdubs with turntables, added vocoder melodies, and also a proper amount of shout outs. The idea was to present a highly condensed mix that still has the raw live feeling we love from playing records in the club. With more than 30 tracks in about 55 min we're using some of our favourite cuts, moving through our biggest influences from House, Techno, and Electro, mixing all with a solid base in Hip-Hop." -LNS & DJ Sotofett

come again but we’ve been giving hints over 
the years that we hope this will give people 
the chance to listen to music many may have 
never heard on this side of sound that provides 
a provocative and thoughtful musical workout 
in your mind..

Xi'an-born and Toronto-based producer, pianist, and DJ Ciel steps up for the next Phonica Mix with a slow building club room warm up. With a selection of deep and chugging bass, house and techno this is a mix that equally see itself lending its ears to the home listener as well as the club dancefloor frequenters. Its this diverse sound that has seen Ciel take the helms of some of the greatest clubs, festivals, radio shows and podcasts as well as releasing solid records on labels like Mister Saturday Night, Peach Discs, Coastal Haze and more her sound is truly solidified through these outputs. We are delighted to have Ciel join us ahead of some of her amazing shows this year like Kala Festival & Multi Multi(Where we will also be hosting a 20 Years Of Phonica Stage). We had a chat with Ciel about the mix and about some of the releases she has coming up.

"I wanted to craft something polyrhythmic and groovey while focusing on the idea of stretching time and slowing things down. I’ve been loving the resurgence of funky hard groove techno and wanted to make a mix with this sound in mind while slowing down a lot of the tracks (by 10/15 bpm at least). In general, I’ve been enjoying a s lower and more considered pace in my life and this mix has a bit of that. Stretched out rhythms with the long mix."

Next up we have a mix from one of LA's brightest DJ community members, Max Ellington (@berrmax). Max is an LA-based DJ with roots in Ann Arbor, MI. Through his VPN Radio show, Surrealchemistry, he has embarked on a mission to explore the power of deep and psychadelic dance music. He's also a resident DJ at the New Palm event series. Some words from Max about the mix: 

"I used this mix as an assignment to break out of a lower tempo zone I've been vibing on lately and grab some faster + most importantly weirder records from the shelf. I tried to find a balance between speed and intensity--moves to higher tempos eventually accompanied by pillowy synths and dubby basslines.. the feeling of accelerating towards a soft landing!"

Distant Signals 034: Infinite Jess

Jeffrey Sfire’s introduction to the underground dance scene and illegal warehouse parties of Detroit
occurred at the tender age of 15. This escape from suburba led him to some of the city’s most talented
DJs and musicians, who soon exposed him to a new culture of creative riches. Learning by example,
Sfire’s taste and skills as a DJ developed naturally and he soon began playing out at parties, clubs and
sleazy gay afterhours, usually entering covertly through back doors or with a fake ID. A move to Chicago
exposed Sfire to a whole other side of dance music history, including "Italo Disco" and genre jumping dj
styles of the Hotmix 5 radio djs. He spent afternoons digging through record store crates, meeting retired
DJs and developing his musical palette. Having held numerous club residencies, he regularly plays at
Panorama Bar and Cocktail D’amore in Berlin, The Carry Nation and Wrecked in New York, Hard French
in San Francisco, and his own party Loosen Up! In Detroit, consistently offering a finely-tuned selection of
Acid House, Italo Disco, Latin Freestyle, & 90’s NYC House. In 2013 Jeffrey and SOPHIE released the
first untitled “Sfire” record on Cocktail d'Amore Music out of Berlin which has become a cult classic. Since
then the duo has released 3 more untitled “Sfire” records. He is currently living in Detroit and is one half of
the Italo/Electro duo Looky Looky with Ian Clark released on Dark Entries records of San Francisco
